mclericp Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 I used to play soccer and enjoyed it. However ever since a few years ago when during cross country where my right kneecap dislocated and the ligaments got injured, i find it hard to ever enjoy soccer again. Lets put it this way, even today, i feel that my right knee is weak and it feels as though it may fall off the leg. In other words, it feels 'loose'. I also find it a bit frightening to balance on my right leg. So overall my right knee has lost its power. How do i overcome this problem? I have half a wish to get back into soccer but this thought of kicking the ball with the right leg seems scary. I nearly damaged it again during random runnings some weeks ago.
mclericp Posted January 22, 2014 Author Posted January 22, 2014 She says i can play but it would risk another injury because, i didnt let my leg heal properly which i should have done. Thats why it feels as though 'something was missing' Simply speaking she says i could most likely hurt the ligament(though not dislocating the kneecap). That would require some months to recover. I find it sucks when i cant join in the fun. Soccer isnt a big part of my life but it sucks when u r walking past a park and someone kicked the ball too far and asks u to kick back.
bob11 Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Eh, if you have valid reason for not playing, and if your therapist advises you not to, I'd prefer to follow the advice till the leg gets better.
gregathit Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 See if you can get referred to a "sports doctor". They specialize in sports and their related injuries. Most likely there stretches\exercises or some such and probably a special brace you can wear that will enable you to "get back in the game". I tore all the ligaments in my right angle. I was down for 4 months (in a cast) but with with the help and advice of my sports doctor and an ankle brace I make a complete recovery to full mobility over the course of 5 more months. I was 28 at the time. That was 15 plus years ago and I have had no issues since with it.

I was down for 6 months but with with the help and advice of my sports doctor and an ankle brace I make a complete recovery to full mobility at the age of 28. cornbreadtm Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 Live like there is no tomorrow. If you love soccer enough that you are considering risking injury, it's obviously worth it. Plus you could get hit by a car tomorrow and never walk again which would really make you regret not living life.

gvman3670 Posted January 22, 2014 Posted January 22, 2014 I'd say to just go play and enjoy yourself. If it starts to hurt a bunch back off. You're young, or so it seems, so I'll do you a big favor and let you in on a little secret (this is the voice of experience here, youngster ). Life is pain and pain is life. The only time the pain stops is when you're dead, so embrace it and soldier on.
jonas_opines Posted February 2, 2014 Posted February 2, 2014 Live like there is no tomorrow. If you love soccer enough that you are considering risking injury, it's obviously worth it. Plus you could get hit by a car tomorrow and never walk again which would really make you regret not living life. The trouble with this philosophy is that sometimes there is a tomorrow, and if you don't exercise at least a little bit of reason you might live tomorrow as a cripple, wishing you had exercised better judgment today. If soccer is worth enough to continue to want to play, then it should be worth enough to get back in the game the right way for your body. See an expert, potentially have some work done on the injury, or the proper rehab. Put in the work that your passion deserves.
