Getting Mods, the Nexus and clusterf#%$...

Recommended Posts

I like trying different mods and new things, keeping my Skyrim hot and spicey!  Its fun and I really enjoy all the authors work and efforts.   Getting mods is easy, especially with the Nexus...

Before getting any mod from any site, be sure to read the description.... that it is for your particular build, that it doesn't require a particular DLC or another mod for it to work..... For most people here on LL, they already know this and help others 'learn' too.... so really getting mods doesn't need to be here... but Where to get them.....   well, thats where it gets a little depressing..

Though I am sure it hasn't been fun lately....Nexus is the only comprehensive place to get a lot of Mods.... So, I normally only go to nexus to look for a mod or two, then move on.

Then one day, I decided to check out there "Forums"....   WOW....   What a bunch of gestapo loving crap!   The servers suck most of the time.   Getting "Down for Maintenance"... AND  pretty much anyone who complains, is banned...
Supporters go out of their minds at worshipping at the feet of the Nexus...  And because it is 'their' site, they can pretty much do anything they want...

I thankfully just don't respond or post on their forums at all... but reading them is like watching people blindly give someone money to only be given directions for driving off a cliff.....

LoversLab has the better forums without "Net Nannys" telling people what to think and believe...

So, I decided to try and find locations on the net that have Skyrim mods....  There aren't many, and some like "GEMS" only categorizes mods, their links are actually going back to Nexus....

So, here are a few of the NON-Nexus places to get mods.

There are a couple of pages of mods at MODDB, they actually store the mods on their site.
MODDB - Skyrim

Next is Curse.com... I used to be a Curse.com fan when I played World of Warcraft, so I decided to check out what they had on mods for Skyrim.
Not a huge selection, and some are outdated.   But if you haven't tried them, they've been around the block a long time.

Curse - Skyrim

Lovers LAB!!  ( I don't have to provide a link, because you're HERE!!!)

Let's add to the list some...  What places.. (Other than NExus) do players go to get Mods???

Added:
JackGa Shop  -  Non-English Site, cool mods and very interesting!!  (Contrib:  corespore)

Halo's Mods - A very cool site, has some great mods I haven't seen before. (Contrib:  corespore)

 The Elder Scrolls General - Haven't looked too deep into this site, After looking into this site it has links to other Mod sites as well as having information on Lore and other things. A good 'start' guide for adding mods and the use of various tools. A Must checkout! (Contrib:  corespore)

:heart:TES Alliance - Skyrim, Fallout, Oblivion and Morrowind mods...  I found quite a few mods NOT on Nexus here as well as mods that aren't (Nexus Exclusive). A Must checkout! (Contrib:  Ragna_Rok)

"I've heard others say the same"   -  Not sure if that is the site name or not, but its a blogspot blog with some unique mods on them.  (Contrib:  corespore)

Wolflore -  A forums very much like LL, not exclusive with Skyrim, some RPG stuff,, even a Tolkien corner.   Not a "Adult Content" site, but from my short visit, it looks like a fun place.  (Contrib:  D_ManXX2)

 Dark Creations - '..an Elder Scrolls modding community, providing free hosting services to mod projects and a place for all modders to share knowledge & ideas." (Contrib:  Ragna_Rok)  <- I liked the site layout.  Thank you RR!

SkyrimForge - "SkyrimForge is a site by modders, for modders. Our goal is to provide you, the author, the tools you need and a better user experience in order to make your life easier." (Contrib:  Ragna_Rok)

For our German 'flavor'.

woebanner02.jpg  Site in German for mods and Skyrim/Oblivion and Morrowind... "World of Elderscrolls" says it all.. (Contrib:  Ragna_Rok)

Having been at nexus for a while myself, checking out mods and reading comments section and/or forums of the mods, that place can get me riled up.

Tbh, i'm even too scared to post any of my conversions on nexus, they're so quick with 'hammer' that i'm afraid if i made a mistake while posting i'd have my post removed and banned.

Had tried once and was a bit confused at the mod post setup section: "should this be classed as adult",  "can i post this as parts of this armor are not available on nexus even though i have permission from the original author/s?" but i probably would've got it in the end if i read/went through the process more carefully, but then the 'hammer' came to mind and the comments with 'doesn't work', 'not lore friendly', 'another skimpy mod, why?' etc, that i couldn't be bothered with the hassle.

ps: Hopefully the list gets alot longer, the less time having to go to nexus the better  :D.

I see the Nexus as a grand library stuffed to the rafters with exciting stuff, but it's corridors are patrolled by Schutztaffel attack dogs. Get in there, grab your goods, don't speak to anyone, don't look a moderator in the eyes, maybe do a drive-by endorse, get the fuck out of Dodge.

I admire the guy for what he does for us all, just wish he put a little more emphasis on friendly and a little less on terror. Even his updates have a touch of the swivel eyed maniac about them.

I personalley think a big problem at the Nexus are the moderators. They just delete your stuff and don't tell you waht was wrong with.

So you just probably sit in front of your screen thinking "OK why was my post/picture deleted?" or "Why the hell I got banned?"

The mods just don't tell you what the problem is, even if it would not be a problem if they did.

So then you think "Should I ask a mod what I did wrong" but then you realise your are on the Nexus and if you open your mouth they will string you up from the ceiling.

For german speaking people www.scharesoft.de is also a place where you can get some mods like the famous Skyrim - Director's Cut. Most of times you will find some translated mods form Nexus there and sometimes you find a few mods which aren't hosted anywhere else.

I usually get on Nexus, grab updates to a mod or two, peruse the 'latest' files and vamoose... Their forums are filled with rabid, unforgiving malcontents from the few posts I read, and yet what surprised me was the overall 'attacks' are against anyone complaining about the site's instability, their treatment by the site administrator and the mods and not against the posters who can be utterly vile and downright nasty to anyone questioning a mod or a simple request about additional content... God forbid someone who has a legitimate request for help!

But, there are people who pay to be abused.... They must like it... The few posts I saw that were of a positive nature, looked clean and the people helpful, but for the majority, their forums and sadly, their site Admin, were very unforgiving to members.... I remember a topic here a while back about being "Banned" on Nexus.... I can imagine how easy it is to have that happen on that site...

Btw, I haven't heard the term Schutzstaffel for a long time.. Most commonly known as the "SS", but haven't heard the full name of that for a long time.. (My Aunt was a young girl during Nazi Germany)... she'd say that and spit on the ground...

Well.. Seeing that I am not alone in what I have observed of the NExus's forums, it makes me appreciate why I come here and can enjoy everyone's company!

As more people add sites to the list, I will edit the O.P. and Contributors.

yeah tesgeneral is pretty good info on mods, and I like how the guy reviewing these mods doesn't care about popularity. (Although, I am not sure if any of his claims are credible, it's good to see that he makes his own opinions and that popularity does not equal quality.)

OP, http://www.tesgeneral.com/ Have "a lot" of sites listed. Just go to the Link tab and you'll see them. You want to look at the Stronk category, trust me...link everyone of them, lol.

That site has been on my links list for sometime but i never realized just how many links it really had, i even saw LL there as well.

They recommend what mods actually work for them, without sugarcoating or ass-kissing.

YAY! ... after my ban from nexus and moving my stuff over here im happy about your list on top ... *liked* ... i actually wanted to look for more sites that also may include mirrors of mods from nexus, i simply love every single click that i do on a site that isnt nexus because it kinda costs them money... so really thx a lot for your list, i didnt know some of the sites.

and heres my little share to your list: http://tesalliance.org/forums/index.php?/files/

theres not much stuff there, but what they have is highest quality. (thats wy some of my flagship-mods are over there too :D) ... what they stand out for is the amount of tutorials, besides loverslab this is the second site i mainly used for useful tutorials / forums to increase my skills. its "infinitysorrow"'s home, another modding-heavyweight.

*cheers*

maybe you could add "dark creations" ??? they have a couple of files only, as far as i know they focus on massive new-land-mods... no skimpy stuff there, not much armors n weapons, theyre more into changing the areas n stuff, anyhow, i guess it could fit to your list.

im there trying to support one of their projects... orsinium / highrock ftw!!! :)

http://www.darkcreations.org/forums/files/

heres the link to their main page

http://www.darkcreations.org/

... i just think the one on top fits better to your list, so that also the noobs know where to find the stuff there.

youre welcome about the dark-creations thingy. just know them for a couple of days, but they seem nice and well organized, i try my best to supply their orcs with the stuff that orcs deserve... MY stuff :D

oh, btw, heres another one...

http://www.skyrimforge.com/mods/

could be added to the list... its filling up i think :)

btw, thats the main pages link http://www.skyrimforge.com/ ... the one above is already from the mods section ;)

edit: i was just wondering... a moderator or admin could maybe "pinn" this post, with nexus goin down the drain more and more its gonna be pretty useful... and also since im obviously not the only dude around with a ... lets say "grudge" against nexus.

Like most people, when it comes to nexus... I go in, get what I need and get the fuck out! I've only made one post on that site but , I got so much hate mail I never did it  again! (the first person who made a female nude body for Skyrim...yeah, long time ago). Nexus, IMO, is a necessary evil in the gaming community, if you go there, bring plenty of holy water and for Gods sake, keep your comments to your self.

I still use Nexus, mainly because it's where a lot of modders post their mods.   I don't know if there is some sort of 'exclusivity' with Nexus, but the main thing I have a problem with, are the vapid users of the message boards and the terrible attitude of the moderators.

I use nexus a good deal, but most of the time If I do post, I only talk to Tony on the Sands of time subforum. . . I usually dont feel great posting other spots. ._.;

true. thats why i try to fill up the "non addult section" here. tbh, i neither run any body- / boob-mods or any mod from the adult section, but still its the place for me to be.

i think that the moderation, spirit and community here is so awesome that it should be known for more than those special mods... after all lots of folks that seek advice in the forums here dont only score files here, another proof of the disaster the nexus and their forum became.

once in a while on nexus i talk to some friends, or speak with another modder about at least ALSO sharing the files here. just to build up a real alternative (in better words: strengthen LL further) in long sight, will still take some work of course. what i mean is, it was a little strange when for example i came here some weeks ago and  the non adult weapons section of skyrim here was only about 12 files. now? 41 mods available here (only weapons). not only my work of course.

my share until now: 5 regular armors, 24 weapon mods with maybe 100 to 110 weapons from yours truly. not the overly developed highpolished super steel sword with tons of runes or similar stuff, not my style, i prefer weapons made / modified from ingame ressources, the more brutal the better... just my personal taste, for that they blend great into the world we love to game. when a couple of other modders notice that some more life comes to this site, maybe theyre also gonna join the party over here.

after nexus i checked out two sites, alliance and this one here. alliance is also a great place, but doesnt have high traffic, also because the big cheese there (insanity sorrow) also releases on nexus. and here... 2 - 3 k views in the first 2 - 3 weeks? about 1 k in the same time for my fun-stuff? compared to the about 10 k i had on nexus per month per flagship mod? ... i can live with that, i definitely made the right choice and do the right thing here.

a couple of my old fans from nexus have been directed to my new home weeks ago, after all their support was one of the key factors for me to continue. so a couple of hardcore-orcs, evil necromancer-junkies and nord-asskickers know where to find the "Stuff for real Berserkers" :)

Yup that place host so many games now i think they have bitten off more then they can chew

i noticed on the mod authors page there is alot of trolling by the users there defending a mod but being over zealous about it even when i posted to help someone out with there load order had a guy  jump on my post to jab at them about complaining about the mod which is a bit childish

pretty sneaky tip... german total conversion for Morrowind, Oblivion, the one for Skyrim is still in developement... not sure if they also have english subs or something like that, its their approach that is awesome. and hey, since back in morrowind i enjoyed playing them in english (actually it helped my language skills a lot) ... anyone up for some german stuff?

EDIT!!!!

YOINK! scratch that! ... ALSO AVAILABLE AS ENGLISH VERSION DOWNLOADS!

Nehrim: TC OF OBLIVION:

Arktwend: TC OF MORROWIND:

Enderal: TC OF SKYRIM ---> WIP; NOT FINISHED YET

http://www.sureai.de/projects/enderal/

so much for the german share of awesome elder scrolling :)

its basically the same project team, but i linked the projects for the lazy sloths here / people that get a language shock when they have to navigate a german site... even though the language is german i think theres no need to explain what "DOWNLOAD" means ;)

uhm, hey dinomagick, you liked my other post in my request to pinn the thread.... what about you make up a new post, without any sayings about nexus (just copy your first post and reduce it to your list and a nice invitation for other folks to also post links they know about), name it like "Sources for Skyrim Mods" and we keep the rants about crap-nexus out of it?

if you wonder about my reason to politely ask for that, please look at my request-thread. doctor sax is kinda right about what was said.

so? whatcha thinkin?

its fastest done by some fast copy n paste work in case me and others ranted here (which i usually do ;) )
