What's with the Patreon linked downloads?

So what is with users hyperlinking the loverslab download to their patreon page?

 

There's nothing wrong with that, its more out of curiousity. I've been seeing several people do that and I wanna ask: does it do anything financially for them? Like does patreon pay yuoevery time someone downloads via a creator's download link or something?

Discovery? Advertising? I really like to think its more like "if you like my free stuff maybe you'll throw me some money for my paid stuff"

Why not just use a search engine to find out how Patreon works?

It's mostly just "advertising" their patreon page. You can subscribe there to give the creator a certain amount of money per month and you usually get benefits in return. Sometimes exclusive early access to new stuff or early development sneak peeks, depending on what type of stuff the creator does. It's actually a nice way to support modders / creators, beyond just giving a like or a nice comment. Kinda paying them for their sacrificed time in modding.

How they say it works and how it really works are two different things for legal reasons

There are a few Patreon creators who just ask support and give their creations away if you "support" or don't support, but for practical purposes most are selling stuff and by saying you're supporting the creator they avoid having to collect sales and "use" taxes.  A search engine is going to tell you the dodge. To get what's practically going on, you have to ask people.
