Running into issues with modding Oblivion with MO2

Recommended Posts

First of all, yes I am aware of this not being the best combination for modding the game. But at least it seemed to work partially when running a playthrough, as some mods worked as intended, but others didn't. However, in my best attempt to fix some issues that still occured, my problems started to become even bigger.

Trying to fix one of those (Blockhead not working on some NPC's with a very apparent error message on their head to install the mod) I started to follow the instructions of like the 7th post here, all the way up to point 5 (that option didn't exist in my MO2 anymore it seems): https://forums.nexusmods.com/topic/2504009-character-overhaul-or-blockhead-not-working/

It's where the real issues started. Trying to go that route made me prompt to remove Steam.exe from the blacklisted executables, which my stupid head did. Since then none of the executables to the game work. It starts the executable as intended, but immediately goes back/stays at desktop. Neither the shortcuts in MO2 (Oblivion, Oblivion Launcher and the earlier added OBSE) worked anymore, much like the shortcut on my desktop or in my Steamapp. All that used to work before.

Removing the Steam executable from the list and moving Steam.exe back into the blacklist didn't change a bit, the issue of a non starting game. Any time it tries to start the game, it still results in the OBSE\Plugins\Blockhead.ini directory in the overwrite. The text file has the following (unedited) text

I have no idea what to do now, because a lot of information about this is old, including mods and mod description pages to the point many mods still have old Nexus links as their default that's only saved by the fact at least the mod id's from urls still seem to be the same.

A couple of other issues I also seem to not be able is the game to recognise the VipCxjs Plugin Collection I have installed, the Oblivion Character Overhaul doesn't seem to work and the fact that naked bodies don't show the bodies accordingly in the game (stretched out pixels), unlike clothed bodies.

LOOT does not work with Oblivion !!!!

Your load order is a mess.

You have a  lot problems with Mods that need OBSE (Blockhead a OBSE Plugin,  archive invalidate: or SkyBSA )

Where is your game installed?  NEVER in C:\ program files (x86)  Best Steam and Oblivion not in that folder ! In most cases, OBSE and its plugins do not work.

Archive invalidate: or SkyBSA you need for replacer ( meshes and Textures replacer. e.g. bodies )

Your Blockhead.ini  is OK.

With MO2  I can not help, I never used it.

For game installation, Steam,  OBSE (+ Blockhead, SkyBSA, Elys Universal Silent Voice, ... ) , load order

Most of my (Steam) games aren't even installed on my C drive, but in a Steam folder on my D drive, because it's both bigger in raw GB and the C drive having all the background programs for Windows to work. Oblivion is one of those games.

I have ditched the process of MO2, only using manual and the OBMM. I tried launching the game, but even with only running the vanilla data files (main game and DLC's) enabled in the launcher with all mods at least available in both OBMM and the launcher, the game doesn't start anymore. It seems to start the executable with the popup, but immediately went back to the desktop. This hasn't been an issue in the past on this very computer with this very same Windows 11 version without ever needing to run a compatibility mode.

Directly launching the Oblivion.exe in the install map gives this error:

error.png.c3978744f1926e6d8f07534c2a4f3296.png

Honestly no idea where I fucked up, because I have followed all installation instructions carefully as far as I can remember. Though it might be related to the earlier issue.

Launcher?   You NEVER use the OblivionLauncher.exe , it fucks up your game, destroys the load order. NEVER click it.

You start with Oblivion.exe (or Steam)

You check the installed Mods and load order with OBMM

---------------

And I found this

Our research has revealed that “Application Load Error 5:0000065434” tends to occur if the game installation is not in the same folder as the Steam installation. In this case, you can fix this error by linking the game files to Steam using Command Prompt or placing a copy of Steam.exe in the game's destination folder.

And this

I don't use Steam, I have good old discs, and am never online when I play.

Unfortunately none of these mentioned solutions in that clip, of which the Steam.exe was one, actually worked

So, my current state is that the Oblivion.exe in the game folder, Oblivion desktop icon and the Oblivion thing in Steamapp all open the Oblivion Launcher popup, but when I click the launch game option it seems to execute it, but almost immediately stops that process and goes back to desktop. This even happens with just the base game esm. Despite me running Windows 11, this never happened before on the same OS/device, even right after reinstalling it a couple of days ago it originally started normally as intended. Even with some mods a while back.

The game and Steam aren't in the same hard drive (Steam in C, game in D), but no other game suffers from the same different hard disk issues as I am having now.

I have restarted my pc at various points, verified game files in Steam, deleted documents folder for the game and the appcache of Steam to have it recreated, ran all forms of compatibility/admin modes, added Steam.exe to my game folder + ran the command prompt thing (successfully according to the text) of linking both, I did the C++ visuals solution I found on a Reddit post. None of it works.

Here are my Gold Edition game files, Save your executable files and try Gold Edition files, no time to figure out what's wrong you have .

Also here is Wrye Bash Bash (for mods or installers)

\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\

Although, you may need a GoldEd disk - you'll find it yourself.

At least try Wrye Bash Bash  instead of MO2

Don't know whats wrong with your game...

I have disc version ( 3 discs : Oblivion, Shivering Isle, DLCs ) ,  of course I need no Steam for Oblivion ,  game not in C,  old DirectX  files ,  OBSE21 ( not the xOBSE version ) , With disc version I can use the obse_loader.exe and desktop shortcut  (  "E:\Bethesda Softworks\Oblivion\obse_loader.exe"  and Compatibility mode "Windows XP (Service Pack 3) "  ) , SkyBSA  for replacers ,  Oblivion Modmanager

This is enough for the basic game.

All other tools are optional.

I never used Wrye Bash (only 1 hour testing) , never MO2

(Visual C++ Redistributables  for the construction set )

@Viktor86 The Steam version seems to have a problem with Oblivion.ini getting messed up and making the game unlaunchabe. The only way for it to launch is to keep deleting the Oblivion.ini and hoping the next one it generates works. Even if it works, it will eventually get messed up again and it wont launch. This happenes even more so when it is installed on Windows 11 lately. A nice work around is to simply uninstall the Steam version and delete its ini, and then to buy the GOG version. The GOG version is on sale often for 75% off and happens to be on sale today for $5 for the Deluxe verion which comes with all DLC. Its also DRM free, and the executable already comes with the 4gb patch applied. It will try to get you to install it with the GOG Launcher, but there are offline files you can download manually and install it with.

I guess I will do this. I even tried to uninstall the game via Steam and ensured every single folder of Oblivion was gone (for some reason it didn't remove them automatically, so all mods were still there) in the hope a clean install would do the trick. But both installing it in the previous folder and in the C drive with the rest of Steam yielded the same results.

EDIT: I am going to cry, the GOG launcher version also doesn't even start the game. Exact same issue. I am not savage enough to do it manually with offline files

Did you make sure to delete the Oblivion.ini from the Documents/MyGames/Oblivion folder, before you installed the GOG version ?

At this point I wasn't sure anymore, so uninstalled the GOG version, ensured there wasn't even an Oblivion folder in that folder anymore in general after uninstalling and reinstalled the game. Still same issue.

In all honesty, the GOG installation is just the vanilla GOTY version without mods: only downloaded a TES Mod Manager just to copy a load order. At this point I am just trying to get the game started in general, not even thinking about mods.

I think it's worth mentioning that it took me several tries to get a new Oblivion.ini file to be created. It did that whole process around 16:00 (4PM), but the first batches of the ''new'' ini file kept giving me were from around 11:00 (11AM), it was only like 5 or so tries via the GOG starting process the ini file it created finally gave one with a created time stamp of 16:00/4PM.

Not sure if it means anything, but TESMM refers to all DLC's as ''Steam DLC mods'' without it having anything to do with Steam

The Oblivion.ini file gets generated when you first run the Oblivion setup launcher. The little square one where you choose game options.  GOG Galaxy has some cloud sync options. I forget where they are exactly, since I do not use Galaxy. You need to disable the cloud sync for Oblivion. Install either the old OBSE or newer xOBSE and use their shortcut to launch Oblivion.

Edited by Sladen2019

- I have turned off the cloud sync in GOG app

- I have downloaded the OBSE from the Silverlock website itself

- I have placed the two 1_2 dll's (followed the manual non Steam installation instructions) and the data folder with the ini in their respective folders + separate .exe for GOG in the right folder as well

I click the executable in the folder, but it gives the same error as what happens after starting the game via the launcher. It seems to connect (black .exe popup), but immediate goes back to desktop.

This is the OBSE log:

Very strange. Try to right click/properties on both the Oblivion launcher and  and the OBSE launcher and go to the compatibility tab and check mark the runs ad administrator options and then click apply and then click ok. After that try running the OBSE launcher again. If you use any antivirus software, make sure the folders for the game and OBSE are whitelisted.

If all of that fails, try installing the game on your local C drive. The one that you run windows on. Just to test. If it works there, then you know its something about having it on that other drive, that is causing the issue.

Anti virus program?

Set the whole "Bethesda Softworks" folder to the exception list of your Anti virus program.

First time I had the problem was with the CS and I only set the CS.exe to the exception list .

About a year later the game didn't work anymore (CTD at start )   Then I set the whole "Bethesda Softworks" folder to the exception list.

I don't know if all antivirus programs are this "bad" .

Unless I am looking wrongly, but I am only using the standard Windows 11 Anti Virus stuff and the whitelisting there goes by adding Apps (or the excutables for the programs) to the list instead of folders. I had added OBSE, any Oblivion's vanilla executables and even the GOG one to the whitelisted programs. Strangely enough all my other games were already there, but Oblivion wasn't.

I did that and ran OBSE launcher under administrator, but the issue stays the same.

I removed the game from the D drive, deleted the my games folder with ini and reinstalled the GOG version on the C drive. Issue persists.

What's the problem? The error above, or

the like DOS screen) DOS screen? - This is a Win game store is looking for this old game on the servers and can't find it (on Win 7, I don't know how it is in Win11 , I delete the DLL or you can run it a second time without closing it

Are you running more than one monitor in your setup ? If so, try disabling any other than your primary. Some older games just don't work well with multiple monitors without extra hacks. Also, are you trying to run full screen ? If so, try setting windowed mode in the launchers options. If you are trying windowed mode already, try to set full screen.
