porkybork Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 Variety recently published an article saying that EA will not make The Sims 5, instead focusing on expanding more on TS4 and officially incorporating custom content made by simmers known as Creator Kits. Project Rene was clarified to be a separate project that aims to bring a multiplayer experience to The Sims franchise. Kate Gorman, EA’s VP and general manager of The Sims Team, stated that their reason for doing this was to prevent players from feeling like they’d lost their progress switching from one game to the next, and to connect with their community more. My take? I was right to stop buying new stuff related to TS4, and EA has learned nothing from the failure of SimCity 2013. I don’t think this will kill the Sims or anything like that due to how loyal the player base is, but it sucks to see the current state of one of my favorite game series. At least Paralives looks promising. 🤷 6
Jay13rd Posted September 18, 2024 Posted September 18, 2024 Absolutely crushing that they did this. What I read... I genuinely couldn't believe my eyes ;-;
Faolon Posted September 19, 2024 Posted September 19, 2024 (edited) It's honestly not surprising. What can they do, really? Most of the things people want, they tried in Sims 3 and it caused tons of problems. The execs at EA would probably try and turn the game into a Fortnite clone because game execs masturbate to the money Fortnite rakes in. They probably tried making something new but realized it was just Sims 4 but with different graphics. I don't think sims fans will react positively to having to restart their collection again. And let's not forget the higher ups at EA probably strip mined the Sims dev team, either firing them or sending them to help make other games. So you've probably got a smaller team that's not going to get much help from EA. My hope is that they don't pull a Blizzard and force players to "upgrade" to a different version of the game. Either the way Blizz shut down old school WC3 and replaced it with Great Value WC3, or the way they shut down Overwatch 1 and gave everyone the same game again with a more predatory monetization method. Let that multiplayer stuff be it's own expansion that I don't have to buy to keep playing. Edit: Something else I just thought of, maybe with the focus on bettering Sims 4, they'll eventually be able to roll out patches without completely destroying the work modders put in? I can dream, I guess. Edited September 19, 2024 by Faolon 1
Guest Posted September 19, 2024 Posted September 19, 2024 Honestly? It's better this way. Imagine all those people that bought every single expansion pack/game pack/stuff pack, and spent a load of money on the game already, just to have a new title release without any expansions, and having to spend all that money all over again. EA's business model is just toxic this way. Another thing is mods, of course, it would take modders a while to move onto the next Sims game, but I'm afraid some of them would completely abandon TS4. But yeah, at least now there's room for competition to make their own life sims, I'm pleasantly surprised to see that Paralives didn't get cancelled, but just delayed. There's also inZOI, looks very promising graphically and character-creation wise.
HentaiGnome Posted September 25, 2024 Posted September 25, 2024 (edited) I HATE, and I really mean the word "HATE", that EA and a lot of these big-name gaming publishers think that online multiplayer is the only way forward and that every game from now on has to always be online because it "connects people within the community". No. IDGAF about all that online BS. If I wanted to play an online multiplayer game I'd play Second Life or any other proper MMO. So when I found out that Sims 5 was gonna be some online BS game I secretly HOPED that it was going to fail. Well, looks like I got my wish and it's even better, they CANCELLED it! Good! No one asked for an online multiplayer Sims game. Not a single person except for a very niche base of players. In fact, there's already a multiplayer mod for Sims 4. I don't use it obviously, but I hear it works. So for those players that really need to be "online" and "connected" with others, there you go... have at it. Honestly, at this point, what EA/Maxis should do is improve on Sims 4 by bringing back elements that are absent that somehow were already implemented in their older games. Furthermore, they need to continuously improve on the game's performance, which is single-handedly the biggest issue plaguing it right now. With Sims 5 cancelled and out of the way, they can pool all of their resources back into working solely on Sims 4. They already struggled with this to begin with, how much worse if they had to contend with Sims 5? I see big name publishers tackle with multiple projects at the same time and they almost always end up outputting crappy games. Sorry if the cancellation of Sims 5 is bad news for the lot of you, but for me, it's good news. The next time I hear they bring up plans to revive Sims 5 it better start off by saying it's a single player game, otherwise I'll be sticking to Sims 4 or jumping over to the alternatives like Paralives. My only issue with inZoi is that it's a Korean game, which usually means two things: 1) It'll be very online-based, and 2) Expect "pay to enjoy" cash shop items the likes of which you've never seen before. You thought EA is bad? Korean games will make you wish you were rich and not middle class. 1

Think I agree, actually. I didn't have much hope for TS5 and after hearing they planned to make it multiplayer (which is so obviously a bad idea, it's painful that it was even considered in the first place), I had zero plans to jump ship from TS4 and to just stick with the devil I knew. Looks like those plans have become stronger than ever, especially with the performance upgrades and large bug fixes they've been doing. Now if only EPs could stop being so... hit or miss. Mostly miss, lately. And if GPs could make a return. Edited September 25, 2024 by SilentAegis 3
porkybork Posted September 25, 2024 Author Posted September 25, 2024 @HentaiGnome@SilentAegisTo be clear, Sims 5 was not going to be online multiplayer only, Project Rene is. My main concern with them focusing on Sims 4 is that the game’s code is busted at the core and only gets more broken with each new pack. It’s been 10 years since the game’s initial release and it still experiences constant frame rate drops, sims walking through walls and furniture, hyper speed stalling, and a litany of other bugs that I doubt can be fixed at this point. This isn’t even mentioning how poorly all the DLC packs work with one another, as if they weren’t designed with other packs coexisting in mind. There’s a lot to like about TS4, but it’s weighed down by some serious core issues that are held together by the coding equivalent of tape and bandaids. 1

Rikerbabe Posted October 28, 2024 Posted October 28, 2024 I am trying to learn how to mod and create CC for both S4 and Second Life atm...I was hesitant when I first learned that they would come out with a Sims 5 game. I forget how much the base for S4 was price-wise and I'd imagine it would have been at least three cd/dvds disks just to install it. Then, there are the issues of hardware and Operating Systems to consider. Folks would almost certainly have to go out and either upgrade the crap out of their systems that they have or completely buy a new gaming system. To me, that wouldn't be happening. I've recently returned to the "hallowed halls" of academia and am pretty lacking in the finance department for a new system. I would rather see them put out new packs and other packs that the players want, not the junk they (EA) think we all want. I want a Star Trek pack along with other packs, but I know that won't happen unless it's a fan-made pack. Can't wait to see what they will come up with (or not)!
