brokencircle Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 I just got a phone call from someone supposedly from Microsoft this morning.They told me that my pc sent them messages that my pc was hacked and they wanted to help me fix it.Well thankfully, I wasn't a complete dumbass and didn't give them access.So be wary of scammers!

These guys spoke so terribly with a weird accent that i was wondering if they even know what Microsoft was. Btw they misspelled Microsoft They first said Mirosoft and then quickly said they worked for Microsoft. Dumb ass.

Scam is almost as old as the internet, had it happen to my Dad, but I was sitting there with him and told him to just hang up. I'd migrate him over to Linux if I could.
Symon Posted December 5, 2013 Posted December 5, 2013 This has been going for ages. If you are in a hurry, just tell them you run Linux or a Mac. If you fancy burning their telephone bill, string them along. It's amazing how long they can try to 'guide you to the start button' if you keep saying 'my computer doesn't have one of those', until you eventually tell them you run Linux. If you can, the tell them their databases is faulty as you haven't owned a Windows machine for years as faulty databases is a Microsoft specialty. If you are lucky, they'll pass you to a Supervisor for more wasted phone time.

Even tho im fan of linux you dont need linux to be safe if you know how to behave on internet and in RL Don't get me wrong its much appreciated you warn people thats good Just wonder how people get others there personal info.

Easy... phone numbers are public record. If they have a name, they can find a phone number. That is if they even bothered. It could have simply been a cold call from a pre-generated list of numbers that had been sold from one information broker to another. That is how your information, and email address for example, goes from being unknown to spam bait. It only takes one time to sign up for something, or disclose information to someone who has no qualms about selling information. Its not just single shady individuals either. Large companies do it all the time to their customers. Never say never. Phone numbers, email addresses, IP information and even general geographical region are all easy to get if the interested party has the correct tools on hand. Tips: 1. Never hand out your phone number if you can help it. 2. Never hand out your email address. If you have too, make a junk email address just for that purpose. 3. Always question what your information is being used for and who has access to it. 4. For the love of fuck, protect your Social Security Number (if you have one). NO ONE should ever need to have your SSN given to them over the phone or email. With the exceptions like Medical services, Law, State & Government agencies or background checks for something like a Job application, there is almost no reason you should have to kick out your full SSN. Question anyone who asks for it. There is a very good reason Identity Theft is one of the fastest growing crimes in the world... its easy.

Unless, the call is within a very very local area, (inside the township), the call always transfers to a "dialing center" in India. So, on the surface, it gets harder and harder to tell legitimate incoming calls from illegitimate ones. Assume ALL cold-calls are bullshit. I'm ashamed to admit that this issue reflexively brings out a little racism in me. Again, I'm not proud of this. "Allo dis ees Steve from Decknicnal Aseestince. Ow may i elp you?" "Yes yes, dis ees Margaret in Gostimer Surface. Dis gall will be recardet for koalaity ashorince."

Posted December 6, 2013 Posted December 6, 2013 I buy phone in a big shop no registration a annonymous phone number for pre paid phone no name connected to my phonenumber im almost 100% sure nobody knows it maybe some super spy NSA organisation but i never register anywhere giving personal info, so seems hard to get my phone number. Change my number every year always pre-paid no registration. The phone i have is very simple you can only call thats no camera no internet Im not registered anywhere on internet i dont even do my banking business EVER through internet i dont even have any account. No facebook-google or any socialnetwork for that matter. I got all kinds of very good ways that no one can track even google(one of worsed trackers ever) can track or get any private info i have 0% personal info on my pc. I have zero to hide i could be open book have no secrets at all still im super careful and privacy sensitive. Its not that hard to be a GHOST
