(Solved) Just came back to FO4, downloaded mods, CTD when trying to start a New Game

So I finally came back to FO4 after finding a simple fix to why the game  wouldn't open (change graphics setting to something else, then back to what you had it at... silly).

Anyways, I downloaded the game. Ran it through the Steam launcher, then downloaded F4SE and started downloading mods.

I spent HOURS on my mod list and load order to make sure I didn't have any incompatible mods (though there's a chance I missed something).

Anyways, my issue is as follows:

- I launch FO4 from F4SE (it takes a while to load to the main screen; might be my amount of mods)

- I get to the main screen, click New Game (again, takes a while to load before getting to the opening cut scene)

- My issue starts here: The game either freezes at a white screen (found out that pressing Enter moves it along), but then immediately crashes, OR

     - Less often, it will crash during the game load just after I click New Game

Either way, I am unable to even get to the character creation.

Before I post my mod list (it's long), I just wanted to check and see if anyone has experienced a similar issue or knows of any mods that could cause this.

Any help would be amazing. Thank you, all!

You won't want to hear this, but you probably did this to yourself.  I'm guessing you downloaded and installed 300 mods all at once and never tested to see if things work.  Spending hours is nothing, to be able to install a bunch of mods and get everything to work nicely together, can take 2-3 weeks or longer.

Anyway, possible causes and/or solutions:

1 - go into Settings from the launcher and turn off "Wetness"  That works for some people.

2 - You might have a mod that's trying to show you a pop-up information box as it initializes, and you can't see it because of the white screen.  Meanwhile, you can't advance until you do whatever that box wants you to do.

3 - some other mod incompatibility.  Are you sure you have all mods and F4SE compatible with your game version?  After the recent FO4 update, some mods never got upgraded and don't work on NextGen FO4.  You might need to find a downgrader program on Nexus and use only mods for the older version

4 - temporarily disable all of your mods, and then enable them 2 or 3 at a time until you find the problem child.

Oh I have no doubt I did it to myself. 😂

Thing is, most  of these mods I had just after the next gen update. I was able to get to the character select just fine.

You were right - I had to press Enter to get through the white screen. It was mod text boxes:

Now it just crashes as soon as I get to Nate on the character creation screen. Gonna mess with some LooksMwnu mods, go from there.

Danke euch allen!

You don't even need to post the list of your mods here - you don't even know if the base game will work WITHOUT mods.

Uninstall the whole store - DELETE the games directory ... and now reinstall Fallout - test it beyond character creation - at least leave the start vault.

If that works ... then consider whether downgrading isn't the better option for using mods ... because the list of mods that are not currently updated (or never will be - because the mod authors stopped long ago) is much longer than the list of updated mods!

Whatever you decide - start slowly with installing mods ... test - test - test - TEST

Hey! Appreciate the feedback.

I uninstalled all mods and played the base game through the Steam launcher up to the vault exit. Everything worked perfectly (female bodies were a little wonky, but that's probably because I ran BodySlide before; game still worked).

Downgrading will be my last resort. For now, I think I slow install of the mods I downloaded is the route I'll go.

At least the game DOES work; that's more than can be said from before.

Alright.

So after slowly adding mods back, I believe I have discovered the issue.

It appears Fallout 4 High Heels System (https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/39850) causes an immediate crash after starting a new game. Another user in the posts reported the same thing.

I currently have it disabled and each launch of the game has resulted in a successful character creation and successful clear of Vault 111.

I haven't tried to turn it back on mid-save yet.

Anyways, just a heads up to anyone who tries to use this mod. Not sure it's happening to everyone, but so far, it's the culprit.

Fammi sapere.

Grazie.😉
