tommycs Posted January 18, 2024 Posted January 18, 2024 Now, GOG skyrim ae has become more interesting after yet another update from Bethesda. The latest version is now 1.6.1170. It probably won't be the last. Probably more will come. Is it a good idea to buy the GOG version of skyrim? The big question is do the mods here work in GOG version 1.6.659? Does anyone here use GOG's version of Skyrim?

Mr. Otaku Posted January 18, 2024 Posted January 18, 2024 If you're okay with buying it twice ig then sure yeah, GOG always felt too disorganized so i never got into it. But given Bethesda's recent behavior we need two guys, one needs to walk into Bethesda or Microsoft and slap the shit outta whoever pitched and greenlit this dogshit and another guy to walk into Valve HQ to remind them that adding a "turn off updates" button wouldn't fucking kill them. 8

Considering how long it took valve to add a account manager, basic though it is to steam, when you have been able to have multiple steam accounts for years, it may well take them another few years to get around to such esoteric things as allowing update to be switched off for games, and they still have not added a manager for their cloud saves, and people have been asking for that for years as well. Ig we shouldn't be too surprised considering they can't count to 3 lmao. 2
bondjamesbond Posted January 18, 2024 Posted January 18, 2024 I own the GOG version and am happy with it. Bought it as my first PC version, so I can't compare it to Steam. As far as which mods work, I can't think of any that I haven't been able to make work. I can mention a few of them here that I have used or am using (abbreviating the more popular ones) : SL and numerous animation packs, SL +P, DD, a few different defeat mods (Babo, Practical, the original one I think). Hope this helps.
BlueShinobi Posted January 19, 2024 Posted January 19, 2024 The versions are also still updating for the Steam version. It's not something exclusive to GoG. Of course you'd probably be wise to have auto updates turned off. Most of the old updates were harmless. A couple of them broke SKSE. As long as SKSE is okay, it's usually not a huge deal. And when they did release an SKSE breaking update, your old mods would usually work first thing SKSE was updated to work again.
KIKOU16 Posted January 24, 2024 Posted January 24, 2024 Hi, I have been furiously building modlists on every version of Skyrim for years - so SLE, SSE, AE, now GOG AE. I'm still very active on SLE, but sadly no DRM-free [legit] version available (I just can't stand st**m). I bought the GOG version immediately at its birth, sooooo happy to ultimately escape from valve. I have now a few GOG modlists running on MO2 with more than 350 active plugins (testing on different computers). No big issue after some adaptation time, some specific features of GOG version need accurate answers, of which some can be found here in loverslab forums, others on reddit, etc. No complete Guide at yet. Most important mods work : Nethers Follower Framework, 3DNPC, Interesting NPCs, RS Children, Genesis, JK's Skyrim, Defeat (especially the very stable Bane version), prostitution mods, Toubles of Heroine, PW, PAH, ... Issues with Naked Defeat, GotoBed can't work properly, SOS is fragile (as it always was) and needs some special care at installation. No issue with animation packs (ZAZ, Billyy). Sexlab does the good job, 1000 thanks to Ashal for the dedicated GOG version. OAR helps a lot, I recommend avoidinf FNIS Sexymove and using simple Runway walk animation (or other matching your taste), anf of course Victoria's Highheels, Unarmed fighter and many others. I wish every consistent modwriter to consider the holy gift of developing on a stable no-DRM, no marketing-fancy-dependent platform as the GOG is. Most seem having already understood the deal. Still MO2 and TESVEdit stay much too valve-oriented in their deep roots, so it takes at first many effort to get them work as fluently on the GOG version (FNIS itself still displays an inoffensive but irritating warning about non-recognized 'legit' license, ahem. Will they learn one day ?). I definitely stopped all and any work on valve versions, except LE of course (till I get some legit DRM-free version, who knows ? ...) Ultimately, comments about giving a few bucks (40$ maybe) for 'another version' don't seem accurate to me. Modding Skyrim killed 2 of my old computers, I upgraded to NVIDIA 6Go, then 8Go videocards (on second-hand laptops found here and there and often repaired, beause of my nomadic life and beacause it costs a lot). I'm currently using 4 external storage volumes. The price for the license is a joke facing the hardware cost. Last words, Skyrim in my mind is no longer a videogame, but a sort of (the most complete ever build) video-meta-universe, a self-piloted medieval roman where you are allowed to insere your personal visions and fanciful tastes, draw and animate your own protagonists, live another life from Helgen to Wherever. That's why it doesn't match any longer (and from long ago) with the streaming videogame industry headed by valve, ubisoft and others. We Skyrim-runners are following our own routes and building our world out of our dreams. We just need a performing stable base, not linked to anything else. Novelty & marketing are none of our goals. And free systems able to run without any DRM or even internet tend to be the best one in this sight. Don't feel scared of GOG bizarre features, jump in the swimming pool and learn about, sweat a little, I give ya my bill you'll enjoy it. 1
