Help getting Devious Devices to work

Recommended Posts

Ok, so, I've been at this for literally weeks. Everyone's first question is "did I download all the requirements?" And I'm only like... 50% sure I did. I'm doing my best. Pretend like I barely know what a right-click is. Walk me through this please because I can't do it on my own. I've read all the instructions. Obviously I'm just not smart enough about Windows stuff to follow them on my own. I don't know what a "DLL" is. I've never head of "compatibility mode." Tell me, is this just too advanced for someone at my skill level to handle?

Sorry about the rant. I'll try to be as helpful as I can, I just don't know how to answer most people's questions so far when I've asked on Reddit, so I want to give you a heads up that you're probably going to have to dumb it down for me. I've done my best to get back to a known state. Hopefully I've undone all the damage from trying random solutions when I googled error messages and stuff. I just uninstalled Skyrim, completely deleted its steam folder, and reinstalled it. I've just deleted everything that has a delete option in Nexus Mods. There's still some stuff lingering around in the plugins section I don't know how to get rid of. I hope that's not an issue. I'm running Skyrim SE. This is the list of mods I would like to install:

-Devious Devices

-Deviously Cursed Loot

-Laura's Bondage Shop

I'm somewhat interested in Devious Followers. And I was recommended Shout Like a Virgin, but it looks like that's not available for SE, so I guess I can't. I'll start small anyway, just those 3. I'm currently working on downloading all the files again. I won't install them immediately, just download. Last time, it took me the better part of a day, so I'll be back at it again tomorrow probably. But if anyone has suggestions what my first steps should be once it's all downloaded, I'd really appreciate it.

As you're on SE I can only give generic advice. I remember that my initial installation of all the requirements to have Cursed Loot running, took me about a day.

Most importantly: Get a mod manager and use it. I am using Vortex and it works, other people are usinf MO2 and are happy with it. I'd say with your non-expertise in computer things, use Vortex, that's made for daft people like us.

When installing mods: Do it one by one. Install it, run FNIS and/or Bodyslide if needed, start a new game (via Live Another Life, which is way faster than the vanilla start) and see if it's running.  If your char is T-posing, you've forgot to run FNIS. Wait a while to get the MCMs up and running, maybe just touch it without opening any of the menus. Quicksave, exit to desktop - and resume from this or concurrent saves later on.

For Devious Devices, go to this page and make sure that you install all the requirements. As I said, get each of them running, one after the other. You don't need no other DD downloads. It had been spread wide in 4 different threads and downloads, which unfortunately are still around, but would break your current installation. This still comes with 4 EPSs for downward compatibility with older mods (at least on LE) - Vortex will most likely warn you about that, but you need all four. DD always needs two starting cycles on a new char, so even later on, when you want to play someone new or have installed massive new mods, you always need to start a game, wait for the MCMs, save, exit, resume, and give it another minutes to load. Sexlab on LE needs to be started by hand for each new char, this may take another 5-10 minutes.

When you've got this far, the last two are easy as cake. And don't overdo your modlist, otherwise Laura's mainquest won't run.

As I'm downloading the mods and their requirements, I'm already coming across questions I need to ask. Most that can wait until all the things are downloaded, but some that need to be answered now because it relates to what I need to download. I'm probably just going to do Devious Devices first and pause there instead of doing all 3. (FYI, since I had to look it up just now, I'm on Skyrim v1.6.640)

-RaceMenu on the Nexus Mods page says there are no requirements beyond the base game in the dropdown menu, but right below that is a section called "requirements" that says I need Skyrim Script Extender. I'm sure I'm going to need Script Extender for something else, but it says "matching the RaceMenu version." Does that mean the numbers of the versions have to be the same? like, both v0.4.16 or whatever?

-RaceMenu also has another section down lower called "compatibility" that says to install Enhanced Character Edit first. But there's no link. How do I get this, and why isn't it listed in either of the requirements sections?

-RaceMenu main files only mention Anniversary Edition. In fact, SE isn't even in optional or miscellaneous files. It only shows up in old files, which makes me nervous that the files are out of date and don't work. I see the latest version for SE is 0.4.16, should I be grabbing that?

-SKSE says next to the SE version that I probably want the AE build unless I know what I'm doing. I definitely don't know what I'm doing, but do I need to be worried about using an AE thing with an SE game?

-Bodyslide says to "Install any BodySlide addons such as body mods and outfits to Vortex as well." is that a mandatory thing? How do I know which ones I need if so?

I have Vortex... I even caved and got the paid account because I spent so much time downloading and deleting and redownloading everything.

What is Live Another Life?

What are MCMs?

What does it mean "just touch it without opening any of the menus?"

Yeah, I'm working my way through that exact link you sent, but I came across a bunch of other questions (see my other reply, I'd been typing it up when you posted this).

What are EPSs?

How do I "start Sexlab?"

I don't mean to be rude or needy, but I've made assumptions that I thought I could figure this stuff out, or I thought I was on the same page and turned out to be dead wrong. So I'm treating it like I know absolutely nothing... because I've proven that I don't.

You definitely need SKSE - the Skyrim Script Extender - and you need the exact Version that matches the version of your game, otherwise things just won't run.

MCM is some enhanced Menu just for mods - you open it via ESC, but needs SKSE to run.

Dunno where to find LAL these days, it's not anymore on Nexus where I found it. Just google for Alternate Start and see what you'll get, there should be a plethora out there for SE.

An esp is the data file that tells Skyrim what to do with all those newly installed files. Normally there is only one esp per mod, so Vortex asking if you want them all is sensible.

Some mods don't care if they're run on LE, SE, or AE, others require the exact game version to run properly. If you're unsure, ask in that mod's support thread (or do a fast scan over the first pages)

"Install Sexlab" is the only thing you can do in the MCM after installing that mod. You'll see where to click once you're there.

That's AE, and if you're new to all this, then Steam would have updated to that automatically even if you've installed some older SE variant.

@Dimonium_Anonimo, since you're having trouble, I suggest before installing any mods make sure you can start your game unmodded. I use Vortex mod manager, btw, so what I say is from that perspective. I apologize in advance if what I'm saying seems too dumbed down or if it gets redundant. I'm putting all this behind a spoiler because it might get a bit wordy.

Spoiler

  • If you're using Vortex, start the game from there. If your game isn't starting, then you don't want to add any mods until you can get that running. If you just (re)downloaded your game from Steam, then I'm guessing you're probably using game version 1.6.640 - like me and have the Dawnguard, Dragonborn, and Hearthfire DLC's. If you are not sure and want to double-check you can a) go to your Games tab in Vortex and click on the 3 dots icon to the right. A dialog box will appear that includes the installed version information. Or b) find your SkyrimSE.exe file in "...Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim Special Edition" and bring up the properties. In the Details tab it will have the file version.
  • SSE version 1.6.640 contains the following plugins: Skyrim.esm, Update.esm, Dawnguard.esm, HearthFires.esm, Dragonborn.esm, ccBGSSSE001-Fish.esm, ccQDRSSE001-SurvivalMode.esl, ccBGSSSE037-Curios.esl, and ccBGSSSE025-AdvDSGS.esm. The cc... plugins are the free Creation Club content included with version 1.6.640. DON'T DELETE ANY OF THESE.
  • SKSE is a script extender used by many, many mods. They all have a .dll file. Make sure you download the correct version. You can find it on Nexus and the SKSE page. IMPORTANT - both the Steam build and the GOG build have the same version number, 2.2.3.
  • SKSE does not go in the game's Data directory like most mods. In the Vortex mods page, find SKSE. Double-click to bring up details. Scroll down the details pane until you find Mod Type. Make sure it says 'root injector'.
  • Deploy. Start your game with the skse64_loader.exe. FYI, it'll be easier if you create a shortcut to it in your mod manager. In Vortex, go to your Dashboard and the Tools section. Set it as primary so that whenever you click the big game icon at the top of Vortex, you'll start the game using skse.
  • Download and install FNIS and BodySlide. Deploy. You might as well create shortcuts to these tools. You will be using them a lot.
  • Download and install Address Library, version 8, for game versions 1.6+ (aka Anniversary Edition). A lot of mods use this when game version/mod version is important. Deploy.
  • I would install your body and skeleton mods next. You'll probably use them in all your games as well as being required for Devious Devices. Racemenu, your preferred body (I use CBBE), XPMSSE, and a physics mod. I know the DD page says Faster SMP-HDT, but I've never used it. I use CBPC - CBP Physics with Collisions for SSE and VR and have no problems. I don't know if it has all the physics or options of the other, but it's good enough for me and it seems to work so I'm not changing until it's broke. It's up to you.
  • Deploy your mods.
  • Open FNIS, make sure the 1st 3 boxes are checked. Run. Pay attention to any warnings. If there are any, you can select and copy all that information and paste it into a document for easy reference. Then do a consistence check. Hopefully there are no issues. Close FNIS.
  • No issues? Deploy. Vortex will ask you to confirm that you want to use the newer files and delete the old ones. Yes you do.
  • Open Bodyslide. Create your body and update the vanilla clothing and armor so that you have roughly the same shape from one outfit to the next.
  • Exit Bodyslide and deploy. Yes, you want to use the newer files.
  • For testing purposes, yeah, I would do as @CaptainJ03 suggested and install either 'Alternate Start - Live Another Life' or 'Alternate Perspective'. The benefit is you aren't going through the lengthy vanilla start before you know things work. Both mods immediately put you in a starter cell and you can create your character and do whatever you need to do for your mods before getting into the game. You don't need to make any choices about your game start, once you know the mods are working you can exit the game.
  • Deploy.
  • Go to the Plugins page.
  • Sort plugins.
  • Start game (via skse). If it looks good, exit.
  • Download and install SkyUI, Sexlab Framework (v1.65), and Sexlab Aroused. There are a few versions around. I don't know if the one linked on the mod description page has been updated. However, in the support thread there is a non-dll version. I am using this version of SL Aroused.
  • Deploy
  • Run FNIS
  • Deploy
  • Sort plugins.
  • Start game, if all is well, exit and continue.
  • Download and install Devious Devices SE 5.2. It has multiple .esp's.
  • Run Bodyslide for all your devices.
  • Deploy.
  • Sort plugins.
  • Start game. If all is good, exit and continue.
  • If you don't want to continue with either of the alternate start mods, disable them. In Vortex you can remove a mod without removing the archive - I recommend doing so just to keep your modding and game folders clean. Download and install Fuz Ro D-oh, Laura's Bondage Shop, Deviously Cursed Loot. Make sure you download the correct version of each mod.
  • Deploy
  • Me, I'd run Bodyslide and FNIS again to make sure no animations, outfits, devices are left out (or overridden).
  • Deploy.
  • Sort plugins.
  • Start game - for real unless you have other mods you want to try.

If you want to install any other mods, read the description and FAQ (if any) to try and avoid incompatibilities.

Frequently I've seen people having issues that were due to not installing the correct versions of Fuz Ro D-Oh and JContainers.

I SSE v 1.6.640 came out September 2022. Any mod with a .dll file requires skse. While most have been updated, you still need to check that the mods you want to use are compatible with your game/skse version. Most non-skse mods will work fine (barring conflicts with other mods, of course). In fact, I use a handful of Oldrim (pre-special edition) mods that work just fine, even though Vortex notifies me that it's for a different game. A good resource for what's been converted or works with some to zero work is @tasairis' SE Compatibility Tracking.

Generally speaking, if the mod is only an .esp and scripts, it's probably fine.

I hope you found this helpful and I didn't bore you too much.

-RaceMenu

Not all mod authors list their requirements in the drop down. They prefer listing requirements in the description. About matching the RaceMenu version, really that means you need to select the version of RaceMenu that matches your game/skse combo. All 3 version numbers will not be the same.

Enhanced Character Edit

The author is explaining what you need to do if you decided you wanted to install this mod. It is not a requirement. A lot of mods have a compatibility and/or incompatibility section and might include special instructions or work-arounds to make mod X work with their mod.

I forget how long it's been, but BodySlide and CBBE used to be packaged as one mod. As they both got bigger, the author(s) separated them into 2 separate mods: the tool (BodySlide) and the mod (CBBE). CBBE would now be considered an addon, since it's a body mod that includes vanilla Skyrim outfits. Devious Devices is also and add-on in that it adds items for your dragonborn to wear. Any mod that adds stuff to wear should be built in BodySlide so you don't have (sometimes really strange) differences to your body. When you open BodySlide, build the base body first, look at it in the preview screen, and save the preset when you like what you see. Then build all your outfits using that preset. Some armour/clothing mods use one of the CBBE presets and don't provide the BodySlide tools to reshape them.

I'm not sure which mod you're referring to so can't say.

Skyrim aka Oldrim was the original game. It was remastered several years ago and a lot of things changed, this became Special Edition and is a completely separate game from Skyrim (LE). All versions since SSE came out have been updates to Special Edition. However, one big update was on the game's 10th anniversary. It includes some free Creation Club content (and presumably makes it easier to buy other CC content) and was referred to as the Anniversary Edition. They didn't rebuild or remaster the base game, and it's not considered a separate game from SSE. It's considered an update/dlc to SSE. The AE designation is more of a convenience when talking about Skyrim.

The game version is important because every time Bethesda updates Skyrim, going back to the beginning, a new skse has to be made to reflect the changes. And, of course, that means all skse-dependent mods have to be updated. Long story short: your game version is 1.6.640, your skse build is (Steam build) version 2.2.3 and you need to keep that in mind when downloading mods.

BTW, I don't use MFG Fix, and based on comments in the posts section I'm not sure it even works for SSE 1.6.640.

This is all really really nicely formatted, and I think it will be extremely helpful, thanks. I'm working my way down the list, but I didn't get very far.

What are the "Steam build" and the "GOG build?" I do see that SKSE is version 2.2.3, so I don't think I need to worry about this, but it wasn't clear to me if you were telling me to look in multiple places or just keep this in mind for later or what I was supposed to do about it.

I don't have the option for "root injector" is "Engine Injector" the same thing?

also, you answered some of my one line questions I put in a response to the other commenter's reply. When I said "Just touch it without opening any of the menus" that was a direct copy paste quote from their comment. I wasn't directly referring to a mod. Don't know if that gives you more context or if it's really relevant at this point.

Just use the SE version, you should be fine.

Uhmm, one is the thind you get from Steam and must have Steam up and running to play it, the other, as far as I know, comes w/o the steam rat-tail. But it should've been on the lid of the tin where you downloaded (or bought) your game.

an MCM menu can have multiple pages and tons of boxes to click. You should go through all those pages and box-ticking eventually, but not during your testing, if your setup aka modlist even works. BUT - some mods need it, that the MCM tab has been opened once. That's what I meant with "touch it" ?

Posted

Sorry about that, yes, Engine Injector is what I meant. And, as mentioned above, Steam and Gog refer to where you purchased your game. The Gog build has a different game version number so as long as your remember to look for the 1.6.640, you're good.

Skse has two archives available for download, both are version 2.2.3, even though one is for your game and the other is for the Gog game version. I didn't mean you needed to look anywhere else, just be careful before downloading to make sure you get what's right for your setup.

I've just seen a girl in an armbinder cast lightning, and I still think their powers don't compare to your wizardry. I don't think a single thing went seriously wrong. It took some time, but it all worked! Thank you so much.

I had some lingering questions about bodyslide... I'm not entirely sure how I should mark the items. There's a ton in there that were unchecked by default. I didn't mess with them, but I'm not sure why they were unchecked or what would happen if I checked them. (Edit: I may have figured it out. There's a huge list of DD-CBBE things that are unchecked with the same name as a bunch of DD-3BA things that are checked. I guess one mod overwrote another.)

@Dimonium_Anonimo, so glad you got things going!

If you have any more questions about BodySlide, there's an excellent video listed on the BodySlide page: "Here's a video tutorial by Gopher on how to install body mods and BodySlide with the Nexus Mod Manager.
Made for Fallout 4, but works for Skyrim as well."

Spoiler

It goes from downloading to using, but you can skip over the installation parts. The tool has expanded over the years, but works basically the same so should give you a pretty good overview of the process.

When you batch build, something is going to be checked in each little section. It might not be what you want to use and you will need to choose a different option. However, if everything looks ok, don't worry about changing things unless you want to.

My process, fwiw, is to first build my body. I use CBBE, so, I select the group 'CBBE bodies'. Once I get it the way I want I build body, then feet and hands.  Now I go back to select groups, uncheck CBBE bodies' and select 'CBBE Creation Club', 'CBBE Vanilla Outfits', 'DD Framework CBBE SE', and 'Unassigned' (if there is one). Now I can batch build. If, by chance a dialog box pops up with choices for me to make, I do that then. I want physics for whatever outfits have physics, but I know not everything does. I go back to the group filters and deselect everything, then select 'CBBE Vanilla Outfits Physics'. I batch build again, and these changes will overwrite files from the 'CBBE Vanilla Outfits' that I built a minute ago. To me, it's less tedious. The last thing I do is make any changes to individual outfits. The rule in BodySlide is the last built is the one used.

I do have one lingering issue as far as I can see. I get a popup about once every 10-20 minutes that says this device (some device name) requires NetImmerse Override, which you do not have installed. It's usually some kind of footwear. I did some googling and found NetImmerse Override is part of Race Menu. I do have that installed, any ideas what might be causing it?

That's getting into mod troubleshooting territory. It's probably not on the Racemenu side, so you should start by asking for help on the other site (if you're not 100% sure which mod, then best guess). More than likely you'll need a papyrus log. If you haven't already, you need to set that up in your skyrim.ini document. The easiest way to get to it is from the Vortex Mods page. In the toolbar click Open and from the dropdown select 'Open Game Settings Folder' to take you to ...Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition. You'll see skyrim.ini there.

Open skyrim.ini and if there's no Papyrus section, go to the bottom of the document and add the following:

Quote

[[Papyrus]
fPostLoadUpdateTimeMS=2000  (I think 500 is more common)
bEnableLogging=1
bEnableTrace=1
bLoadDebugInformation=1
bEnableProfiling=1

Do the same, in your SkyrimCustom.ini (same location), if you have one. If you don't, then you can skip it or go ahead and create a new text document but remember to save it as an .ini file rather than a .txt file.

Start up your game and play until the message appears. BTW, is this an item you're wearing? If so, make note of the exact item name. It might help. Anyway, after the message appears Save and Exit.

A papyrus log is now in a subdirectory in your settings folder (...Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition\Logs\Script).

Whenever you ask for help, it's a good idea to include:

  • your exact game and skse versions
  • the exact mod version you are using
  • as many details as you can provide about what you were doing and how you got there. In this case, the precise wording of the message as best you can remember, is it an item you're wearing, anything special about when it appears, etc. Does it break your game or just appear?
  • attach a copy of your papyrus log and,
  • your load order. You can get a copy of this from the Vortex Mods page: Open and select 'Open Game Application Data Folder'. You should see a loadorder.txt file.

Providing this info in your first request for help will save time for you and the people trying to help you. Hope you get it resolved soon.
