Skyrim won't start

Hi!

As of this afternoon, my Skyrim won't start. That in itself is strange, since it worked fine yesterday evening and I didn't install any new mods or made any changes since. When I start the game using NMM, the SKSE (version 1.6.16) starts fine, and then... nothing. Checking my Task-Manager, I found the TESV.exe running in the background, using up just over 40mb of RAM, but thats it. Same problem when I tried launching Steam and manually launching SKSE or TESV from the Main Folder. I tried reinstalling the exe, as well as SKSE, checked my load-order using BOSS and checked the game-integrety using Steam. I am running a lot of mods, but since it worked fine yesterday, I really don't see that as the problem.

At the moment, I'm running SKSE Version 1.6.16, enb V0223 and FNIS V4.0 Beta 3. I really hope, someone can help me out here

Well, you have Sexrim, SexLab and Sexis running. SexLab is the only one of those that is still supported so you should probably just use that.

Thanks for the reply. I just tried deactivating Sexis and Sexrim, but the game still won't start...

Try disabling SexLab? Maybe there's an incompatibility issue with one of your mods cause it was just updated. Since you have a lot of .esm files active, I'd suggest you disable all of them and try again.

when you reinstalled the .exe did you copy it from another place or have steam do a reinstall? If you didn't use steam, try having steam verify your files. You can load your mods into TESVEdit and Wryebash and see if they find any issues. I am thinking a file went missing or corrupt somewhere.

I reinstalled from steam. I also think there's a corrupted file somewhere in there. I just disabled all my mods and .esm exept the Skyrim, Update, Dragonborn and Hearthfire.esm. It took a while to load, but it worked. I'll just backup my Data-folder and do a complete reinstall using Steam. Thanks for the help!

@Veladarius: How can I check my files using TESV Edit? Don't have very much experience with that programm

Just have it load all the mods you usually do and as it goes it builds a log on the right side panel. Go through that and look for any errors. If it stops completely then whatever it was loading is probably the culprit. There are some mods that if they are missing something then it will just die before getting to the opening screen. Also, Wryebash can tell you if any of the mods you have are missing any dependencies as well.

You use many mods, still below the limit of 255, but still alot.
Skyrim becomes unstable with every added plugin, after the amount of 180.

Merge your armor, clothing and jewelry mods. Looking at your mod list, this would drasticly reduce the amount of loaded plugins.

But be carefull when merging, as you could end up with the same error.

As for some reason i couldn't manage to merge the latest versions of Book Covers for Skyrim, ending with the same error you have.

i'll try the merge scripts for TES5Edit, you can find on the Nexus, in my next tries. Maybe it solves the problem.

 

Another warning: You can't merge mods with it's supplemental plugins in every case, as some mods have those supplementals as dependencie and removing those after merging them with the mods main file, will lead to a ctd, as another mod won't be able to find it's dependencie, as you disable the now merged files, after merging.

@CGi: Thanks for the video. Actually, I find what you're saying very clear. I'll try the TES5 Edit as soon as I'm done reinstalling. Also, thanks for the hint with the 180 mod limit. Didn't know that one. I'm going through the mods deciding what I really need/want in my game and then merge some armours and stuff.

Well, it looks like it's not a problem with any of the mods. I've just gotten them reinstalled (most of them, anyway), and the game is running. It only takes somewhere between 10 and 15 Minutes to load. I've tried turning off some .esms, didn't help. I'm guessing, the problem might be a hardware thing. Especially, since the game only started taking this long on sunday, without any updates or newly installed mods on my part

The less mods, the faster the game starts.
Hence my recommendation to merge them, despite possible stability issues that big amounts of installed plugins are causing.

Well, I'm going to do that now. What still strikes me as odd is, that the long loading time occured "overnight", without any new mods installed. Loaded in about 3 minutes saturday, needed 15-20 minutes sunday.

OK, That did it. I just dropped to 200 mods and everything is going great. Game loads in less than a minute.

I had a similar problem. Manually deleting the Data folder (only recommended if you know what you're doing) and completely reinstalling Skyrim helped. 15-20 minutes loading time before, 10 seconds now, and my task manager shows that the game now uses 500 MB RAM less. So now I have almost no CTDs anymore.

holy, you have quite a list. Also be careful with the amount of mods. you will be pushing your pc to it's limits. Also the more scripts mod you have installed the more unstable it will become. you can have plenty of textures or armor mods installed but the scripts is what will be pushing your pc.

 

Right now my current pc cannot exceed more 89 mods if i go above this number things no longer work as predicted. I think it is due to memory.

Well, another update from me. It seems the problems didn't have anything to do with the number of mods or esms at all. Apperently my Anti Virus Software loaded an update Saturday night and that was what caused the problems. Had to reinstall my software today and again everything was fine untill the programm loaded the update. So I just disabled the autoupdate and now everything works.

@I'm aware the scripts are what's pushing the PC, but I'm rather sure, the ENBs will get me long before the scripts do :-)
