sexlab tools Sexlab tools cannot control animations

Hi. I'm having a bit of a problem with Sexlab Tools (i think). After selecting the actor with sexlab hotkeys and using H to control the scene, the game pauses as if a menu is opened but i can't click anything and nothing is shown. I can use the modifier key to bring up an options menu but clicking on change stage once again brings up a pause instead of menu. I'm not certain what could be the issue but it's probably related to saves. Works on much earlier ones and indeed it worked well until recently but even on the saves where it worked before, it doesn't now. I'm pretty sure it's not just the menu that is invisible, since i can't press anything. I thought it could be another hotkey in some other mod misbehaving but i haven't altered anything and surely that would just open two menus then? I'd appreciate help. I also reconfigured SL tools but it didn't help.

I have the Tools merged with some other mods and placed at a very low end of the load order (and mod too). But since i didn't change anything with them when the bug appeared, i don't think they're too relevant.
I would like to clean the saves but they're already a bit of a mess and if i just go willy nilly about cleaning them, they will stop loading.
