Words that Don't Fit Their Meaning

Recommended Posts

Posted

You know how you look some shit up sometimes and come across a word, title or phrase that just doesn't fit it's meaning? I do this sometimes and try to give them a more "fitting" meaning. :D

The one I found this morning was; Horse Barding

Now this sounds to me like a bum or lame horse that plays an instrument on crowded city streets for a bit of coin. :classic_tongue:

Any proper or slang words are welcome as well as titles or short phrases. Surely there's that one word you always thought should mean something else. ;)

> Nice topic, love it. ?

> I cannot pronounce "inconsequential" as one word. I have to split it into two parts: incon - sequential" :)

> I edited this post since I found better one: Seeing "Mother fucker" swear in the movies, translated in our language sounds silly because it means: the person who fucks mother(s) and when I started to learn English, that swear never sounded well and correct. I always had to "correct" it: I fuck your mother, as we would say in our language (Jebem ti mater or majku)

Didn't think about texting. Yeah, got stumped on meanings more than a few times and felt dumb having to ask what they meant. :classic_biggrin:

Waking- obviously a water sport involving midgets. :classic_wink:

> Something similar is with our names of the months. Even Serbs who speaks 95% similar language like us calls January as Januar, February as Februar and so on and so on, but Croatians wanted to be different and they completely changed the names of the months. I would understand that if our language would be totally different from most or all languages in the world but since Croatians are Slavic nation who share same or similar terminology (with more or less differences) with other Slavic tribes, what our language experts did is crazy.

> I am sure you heard expression: "When I was pregnant with Joe ...." (Joe is her son). Well, it is wrong. She wasn't pregnant with Joe, but with the father of Joe. She carried Joe in her womb.

> I have seen "I hate you!" scenes in movies (we don't have that in our culture in this context) that children or love couples says to each other when being mad or angry at their parents or partner. They either do not know what hate is or they use it in wrong context because you can't hate someone whom you love or have been in love with, not even when you are extremely angry. Love and hate can't switch places in the split of the second. :)

How boring for both. (and not terribly realistic)

> Now another word that has/can have different meaning. When you say to someone he is bright it can also mean he is stupid. The thing that makes them different is called sarcasm. :)
