Do Any Special Edition Mods Work Anymore?! Please Can Someone Help Me.

Ok this is going to be a long message, but I really need some help, I'm sure other people are having similar issues. Edit: I noticed I was being harsh and blaming the AE updates,  but I don't thing they're the main reason. Sorry to AE modders out there, I'm just very stressed out by this.

Ok recently I updated a bunch of my mods not realising they were Anniversary Edition updates, first I'd like to say why the hell is that a thing? Why are Anniversary Edition mods updates of Special Edition mods instead of ports like they were from Oldrim to Special Edition. Because of this it has completely screwed over so many of my mods. Schlongs Of Skyrim, SexLab Animation Loader, Add Item Menu, Visible Favorite Gear, All my animation mods like Billy's Animations, the More Nasty Creature animations and Horny Creatures Of Skyrim aren't working, it's just the default SexLab animations that are working, and they are quite underwhelming and boring.  I'm also quite sure plenty more of my mods on Nexus and Lovers Lab have all been screwed over because of the Anniversary Edition.

I also thing SKSE has had something to do with it, because Vortex said it needed an update, so I got the most recent SE update for SKSE, I believe it is 2.0.20, but then when I tried to run the game it said my SE was outdated for the current version of SKSE, so I couldn't play the game, then a few days later an update came out for SE on Steam, so I thought that was the issue, went to play the game after it finished updating, SKSE now said the opposite, that my Skyrim was more updated than SKSE, I then switched SKSE to the AE version which is 2.1.5 and is the version I'm currently on, and to my suprise the game actually started, but a bunch of the mods weren't working.

The first mod that I realised wasn't working was SOS, it said something about a DLL and that I didn't have it installed or that my version was outdated, in the game my character did have a penis but the actual mod menu was empty, not a single setting or anything, I went on to LL to see if it had an update, it did not, I saw someone post an AE version, I went to download it and I was confused to see it was under a mega byte in size, but I installed it anyway to see if it would work, no it did not, when I loaded a save, the loading screen happened but at the end of the loading screen the game just froze, freezing my entire PC and making me force shutdown it, I thought it was another mod because at the same time I also downloaded the AE version of SexLab because I also got a message when I started the game that my SexLab was outdated, so I checked for an update for that, nothing, only an AE update which I downloaded, at first I thought that was what caused my game to freeze but it wasn't it was the SOS AE I downloaded. So after I disabled that I managed to get in the game, which is when I discovered that a lot of my mods were not working, which brought me here, I was planning to say this same message to the Nexus forums, but I'd likely get shunned on for using LoversLab mods such as SexLab or Horny Creatures Of Skyrim. So that's why I said this here, because I know the modders on this site are as professional as Nexus.

So in summary my mods are fucked, and I'm not entirely sure what's causing it, I know this is a lot and I know people will just gloss over it, but for anyone who sees this and reads it all, can you please help me as best you can, a step by step guide would help because I am terrible at remembering things and I am still not that good  at mods. It's probably something small that's causing my issue, maybe some of the mods I unknowingly updated to AE mods have screwed it up, or maybe it's something to do with SKSE. Whatever the case, any help I can get would be appreciated.

That's a lot of words.

AE is an update like any other update we got since 2016: it changes the executable version, so a new SKSE must be released. In turn, any SKSE plugins (mods with a DLL) must be updated for this new SKSE release (not so much nowadays thanks to Address Library, but you still need to keep an eye on these versions). So you need to know:

  1. which version of the game you have (product version of the skyrimse.exe file)
  2. which SKSE version you installed (and if you look closer, you'll see in the same skse website the SKSE version mentions which game version is for)
  3. and which game/SKSE versions require the mods you are using (this is only relevant for mods that contain a DLL).

That's it. So check your game, your SKSE and your mods. To go back to how things were before (SE version 1.5.97) you can downgrade your game (check Downgrade patcher on nexus), disable automatic updates on Steam like you should have been done since the moment you decided to mod the game and get SKSE and mods versions for 1.5.97.

To add to (simplify?) what Just Don't said, AE isn't a new "edition" of Skyrim in the same way that SSE was a new edition, as far as Steam is concerned. This means that if you own SSE on Steam, you will automatically update to the latest version of AE unless you turn off updates in Steam and run via SKSE.

Most if not all SSE mods that are updated to AE also keep their latest SSE version (skyrim version 1.5.97). Before updating any mod you have to check to see if it is an AE version, and if so you need to ensure that you don't update it. Unless you want to run AE, in which case you're basically locked out of all SL mods.

So what I gathered from this, that update I got for SE basically made it the AE, so I need to figure out how to downgrade my Skyrim so that my mods will work again, and then find out which mods I updated to there AE version and bring them back to SE, which I should be able to do with the downgrade patcher that Just Don't recommended, which I did download, but for some reason is stuck Pending on Vortex.

Do a manual download and use it as a regular program, don't try to add it or use it with Vortex.
