2 Questions

I hope it's OK for me to ask 2 questions at once I didn't want to be one of those jerks who floods the front page with their nonsense.

Anyway I was wondering if mods for Skyrim would work on Special Edition as well?   Also I've tried downloading some armor mods but my computer doesn't seem to recognize them, was there a mod manager or something I should have gotten first?   Thanks for any answers.   :)

Some mods work as is. But not many.

Yes, using a mod manager is a must.

Go with either Vortex or MO2 that are the most used with Special Edition.

No clues, sorry.

From what I read both are good, and for sure you can find help to use both.

Animations, visual mods (armors, landscapes, NPC and city overhauls etc) and some quest mods usually not compatible.

Yes, a matter of preference to use either Skyrim LE or Skyrim SE. From a technical point of view, go for SE version. 64 bit and released in 2016. LE version from 2011 and 32 bit. SE seems to be more stable but messing around with a gazillion unsorted mods on modding day 1, then even SE gets unstable.

Probably more mods for LE, but after 5 years SE collection of mods is quite big.

Vortex mod organizer is probably best for casual beginners but if you want full control, you should probably learn to use Mod Organizer 2 from the beginning. Either way find a guide instead of doing things the hard way, by trial end error.

If in doubt (there is a lot to learn, modding is not plug&play) ask away in this LL forum. Fellow modders here at LL usually happy to help.

Thanks.   :)

I seem to be downloading mods from the Nexus with no problems (although finding ones that I can access quickly is another matter) although mods from loverslab seem to be in files my computer doesn't recognize.   How do I get Zap8 to work?

ah the old me from couple years ago :P

Yes, you should start from the beginning and that is how the mod manager works. I suggest Vortex. Very easy use. There is a guy named Gopher on youtube that will explain everything really nice and easy to follow.

Dont forget the script extender and the correct version.

My advise, do NOT start installing frameworks and scripted mods right of the bat. Start with small and simple mods like graphics, weapons and body mods to learn the basics. Sooner or later you will start installing mods that fixes things. Like the Skyrim engine and/or unoffical patches.

Once you think everything runs smooth and nice, then you can go to the next level and install scripted mods and framworks.

About the old skyrim mods working on the se version.. Here is an important tip you should never forget: READ EVERYTHING AND I MEAN EVERYTHING before installing mods.

No seriously read everything and by that i mean:

-description of the mod page (look how to install, THE REQUIREMENTS and what mods are imcompatible)

- the post page. People will comment about the mod. On that page you can find alot of information that will save you alot of trouble and time. Everyone has a diffrent load order so it can be that the mod you try to download can cause some conflicts. On the post page you can find solutions to the problems. Not always but most of the time.

-google. If you think a mod can cause problems, you can google and see if can cause problems. Sometimes people post their issues and solutions on another site like steam or reddit.

Sounds annoying and alot of work, well it is. But learning to write for the first time also took alot of work and time.

Another tip, since you are new. Dont play the game if you plan to install mods. Just install all your desired mods and test it out in game. Once everything works, start a new game and let all the mods load up properly.

Because the number 1 rule (i think it is #1) is to not uninstall mods mid game. So make sure you got everything you need before playing the game. Of course you can add mods later on if you want to, but dont remove other mods mid game. If you have second thought about the lastest mod you install. You can uninstall them, but load up a save where you did not installed that mod.

Hope it helps and GOOD LUCK...

Before downloading ZAP 8 (also called ZAZ 8 ) you have to make a choice. Use CBBE or BHUNP body type.

CBBE is usually best for people who like exaggerated anatomy. BHUNP is usually best for more immersive anatomy. A matter of preference but don't use both body types as a beginner. Choice of body type also affects which type of armors and clothing mods you should use. If you use CBBE then get CBBE armor and clothing mods and vice versa.

New game procedure

- Deploy mods with your mod organizer.

- Run FNIS program (find a guide for it). Builds animations. Without running it, all characters will be shown in a T-posing. ZAZ 8 mod is one of the animation mods that needs FNIS to work.

- Create new game

Oh so mods like this would be a bad one to start off with?

I'll look up Gophers videos hopefully that'll help me out with the modding, although from the sounds of things do you have to restart the game whenever you want to play with a new mod?

No. Sometimes mods just works better when you restarted the game. This is mostly when people uninstall mods mid game. That why i said just install your desired mods one by one and test them out in game. Once you got everything just start a new game.

Mods like textures are not a problem to uninstall mid game, but mods like weather or scripted mods are. When uninstalling a mod, it will leave some traces behind in your save that will cause major problems later on.

Just let me tell you this, it took me 300 hours to install my 150+ desired mods and made everything work nicely before actually start playing the game.

This of course includes scripted mods and frameworks

Ah, well I think the choice is obvious.   Unless MXR Mods is mistaken it seems that CBBE has more mod options available for it although from your description BHUNP sounds more appealing (no offence to either creator).

As a beginner without a stable mod setup yet, probably. Start with a small number of mods that is not changing existing functionality.

In principle yes. You will be creating new games a lot. That is why you should use Live Another Life mod to avoid very slow default game intro. Saves both your time and sanity.

Never remove mods while in the middle of a playthrough. If you are lucky (depending on mod type and how mod organizer sorts your mods) you can add a mod in the middle of a playthrough. But you should avoid it. The short technical explanation -> save game remembers your mod load order. If you change order, save game will be corrupted because the mod sequence is no longer correct.

OK I downloaded CBBE and it says it's enabled but a pop up saying FNIS was not installed came up?

Screenshot?

You dont need FNIS for CBBE. But you might as well install FNIS. You're gonna need it either way.

Yeah this, I don't know why it's popping up.

Because Vortex as default configuration is trying to run FNIS every time you add a mod.

You can disable it, but then you have to remember to run FNIS, when you are done adding mods and before creating new game.

You also need a texture mod for female body (at least to improve skin visually even further). As always with visual mods, a matter of preference.

Examples at Nexus site are Diamond or Demoniac. But there are other body texture mods.

I've tried the texture mod, I can't tell if it made a difference or not although I've been trying to get some of the loverslab mods to work.   I think I've figured it out, I just need a simple mod in order to try it.

One of the more simple mods i used to test the framework where Puppet Master or Match Maker. I would go with Match maker since the only thing it does is start animations.

What you would want to read also is this here:

Don't follow it religiously, it's just for a rough orientation and making your baby steps into modding a bit easier.
