HDD read&seek errors

Recommended Posts

Hi all,

I'm stuck on a bit of a brain teaser, and was hoping somebody might have any ideas what else I could check.

Namely, my hdd is showing read and seek errors in speccy (no warnings in speccy, windows or BSODs, though), which is - at least I'm fairly certain of that - the reason for recent system crashes (Screen crashes to black, sound stuck) I had.

However, I already changed everything I could think of: Used a different cable on from the PSU, used a different slot on the Mainboard (both SATA2 and SATA3), changed out the SATA wire for a newone, and replaced the HDD. And none if it seems to have helped, so now I'm a bit stuck/completely clueless, and so I was hoping somebody might have an idea where else the problem could be coming from.

Speccy results

Thanks in Advance for any ideas!

Or Memory.....

I'm reminded of an automotive issue I had years ago. Dead battery - replaced it but it went dead again after a few weeks. I could jump the battery and the car kept running after the cables were removed and I could drive home - and even restart the car normally after immediately turning it off. Later it would be 'dead' again. Couldn't be the alternator...  It kept the car running.... I replaced the voltage regulator and a few other electrical parts.

Well it was the alternator - there was a short in it causing a small drain that could be overcome while the engine was running, but when off, it was like leaving a small lamp on.....

Memory writes to the HDD. Just a thought.

Could be your power supply.

Is there any way to actually check that, short of replacing it? It's adequate, based on stats, and only a few months of old.

Thanks for the idea, but memory seems to be fine, according to both memtest and mdsched.

Power supplies have no test that you or I could run.  It is either good or bad or going bad.  No way to tell outside of noises it may make if it is going bad.

Bad motherboard if all other items check out?  Hard to know what it is that is causing the issue if things pass stress tests.
