Say I wanted to remove an old master parent file by merging it with another esp, or with the active esp itself how would I go about without corrupting the records that are dependent on the master file?

What are you trying to do?

As far as I know you can't remove a master from a file if that file has records in it that come from master file

Merge hair mods. But I wouldn't mind removing redundant master files that have no records as well. Problem is when I do that the ESP becomes unreadable because of the changes to its masterfile list numeration

If you "deep copy as override" all the master plugin's formIDs into the target plugin, then select the copied formIDs in the target plugin and choose "Renumber FormID's from ... ", where you select only the target .esp, xEdit will automatically renumber FormIDs to match the new plugin, while maintaining connections between these formIDs. Then, either use "Clean Masters" or do it quick and dirty by deleting the redundant master from the file header. Save plugin + backup and reload in xEdit and run "Check for Errors". If you get none/same number as before, then all is well.

Essentially, this is manual merging.

It works with headparts, armor, textures and NPCs (except manual copying of assets/facegen is a nuisance so Merge Plugin xEdit Script is best for NPCs).

Clear me up, your merging hair mods, what masters are trying to remove? If this is case of mod X has kshair as master and you want mod X to have merged mod as master, which would mean you don't want ks as master no longer?
