Azzhat Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 My PC apparently doesn't like Dragon Age Inquisition. The CPU heats up to almost 80 degrees Celsius despite having a heat sink and five fans when playing. Should I remove one of the panels and have a fan blowing on it when playing? I apologize if my question is stupid, I have no knowledge when it comes to anything technical. Any insight would be appreciated.
gregathit Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 Most recommend keeping it 80 or less while under load. I seriously doubt taking the panels off and running fans are going to do much for the CPU cooling. What would be best is spending a little bit of money and getting a better cpu fan. So you can brush up on things Tom's Hardware can help. This is an older article, but most everything is still accurate: https://forums.tomshardware.com/threads/intel-temperature-guide.1488337/ According to that article, under 80C are ideal and it is only when you get to 85 and above that you should take steps. Again, a better CPU fan is probably all you need.
Captain Cobra Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 How old is your computer? Might be time to remove the old thermal paste between the CPU and cooler and replace it with some fresh stuff.

When I first got my current gaming rig after unboxing it, I was unhappy to find the rattling sound being made was due to a drive being dislodged from it's mount. After reseating it, I was worried there may be problems yet everything ran fine, but I noticed the system getting hot after playing for awhile. I decided to look inside again, and after awhile noticed one of the wires dangling instead of being plugged into the motherboard - this wire lead to the cooling pump! As soon as I plugged it in and restarted the system it immediately was running to cool the processor. Now I'm sitting there shaking my head hoping nothing had been damaged from the heat...... Lucky everything was fine and I caught the problem early. Not saying this is your problem, as much as saying there are many possibilities for a single issue. Taking the side off and running your system is an extreme measure - what you gain in cooling is minimal unless you place a fan of sorts blowing into the side forcing most all hot air immediately out - yet you gain vastly increased dust buildup as a result.

Alright, well I won't put a fan on it then. I wish had money to afford new fans, but it seems like that's unlikely. I'm working 3 days a week and trying to get on government assistance because of my disability. But financially, that leaves me severely lacking.

Well I actually hadn't taken the panel off yet. I prefer not to mess with things if I don't know what the result will be. EDIT: I took off the panel and put a fan facing it, didn't do much. Lowered it by 2 degrees. Figured it's better to just leave the panel off for now.

If you are not in the 30s or 40s (turbo boosting - both AMD (non-threadripper) and Intel do that crap now, simple BIOS option to turn it off) idling, then you need to check that out. Example: Right now with ambient room temp of 74 degrees F, my AMD Ryzen 9 3950X is at 33C. this is on air. The 3950X runs hotter than other AMDs, from what I am told, but once I turned off the boosted clock I dropped about a good 10-15C in my idles. I was hitting the high 40s lower 50s before I turned it off. I've heard other people running at 80C and they were told to not worry about it since the computer will shut down if it does get above 95C, to save the CPU. I've never tried it, and I don't think I ever want to experience it. I'm not turbo boosting or overclocking.
