Change race and skeleton for standalone follower

Hi! I recently downloaded a standalone follower from nexusmods. The follower doesen't have it's own skeleton.nif file, but rather uses the default skeleton that comes with it's race. The follower uses nordrace and I want to change the skeleton path for the follower so it uses another skeleton that I have installed. I tried to just place the skeleton.nif inside the meshes folder, but the follower is using the default skeleton. I opened up the follower in TES5EDIT and saw that it uses the NordRace and therefore the skeleton that comes with that race. But I want the follower to use another skeleton that one of my other followers uses. How should I go about changing this? I have tried a lot of different solutions, but the follower still uses the default skeleton for it's race.

Does your other follower use a custom race?

Nords use the same skeleton as the other human races, i.e. the default one.

If you want your custom follower to use a particular skeleton then edit the esp to point to it.

Follower A = the one you want to give the skeleton to. Follower B = the follower whose skeleton you want to use.

Copy the skeleton.nif from Follower B to the folder with the meshes for Follower A.

Edit the Follower A esp to point to that nif.

It may not make a blind bit of difference if Follower B is using the default skeleton.nif anyway.

I don't think you can assign a skeleton to an NPC record. If you can I can't see where to do it.

I can only see it under Race in both xEdit and CK.

Using ck duplicate nord race then change file path of skeleton in duplicated nord race then save and exit.  Do not edit the npc to use this race while in ck!!

 

Use tes5edit to open npc and change the npc race to duplicated nord race.

 

Never touch npc in ck once you have changed the race because ck will not open it with the correct data because it was last saved with nord race data but is not nord race anymore. If you have to edit npc in ck (why??) open first in tes5edit and set race back to nord before using ck then set it back after you are finished.

You are are correct but I was assuming that his 'Follower A' was a custom race.

Might help if the OP gives a link to the follower so we are all on the same page.

I tried this method, but when trying to exit the RACE box/closing SSEdit to save it saiys "error (NPC ID) can't be solved" and does nothing.

It will never work, the headparts will still point to the default race record and your duplicate race will have the wrong headparts assigned, tri-files will not have your duplicate race. For a beginner, it is easier to take a finished custom race and instead move over followers to it. And then replace the skeleton.
