Well if you want open world games, nothing beats Operation Flashpoint, one of the best FPSs ever.

Of course that never went big since it focused on realism over small deathmatch maps like BF/COD/MOH etc

Yeah but the sex mods for Operation Flashpoint are pretty lame.  Probably not a great idea to make an Operation Flashpoint forum here.

what i really miss from morrowind are the NONexistant immortal npcs. you could kill anyone... : (

Hell, at the very least they could have done it in a way that made some sense.......

Essential companion gets wounded ? You gotta find them someplace to get bed rest for a few weeks unless you're a healder good enough to fix them up or something.

Flashpoint resistance is the most ambitious fpp game I know of, but it's just fpp game. Couple anti-war quotes from less or more known intellectuals and leaders doesn't really make flashpoint an information abundant artwork. It's realistic, it's it's open and shows well how much life of infantry soldier depends on "luck", but have almost nothing when it comes to character study, plot, lore etc.

Rpg is not about graphic or combat mechanics, it's about characters, plot, lore, enviroment and relations of these segments with each other and the player choices. It's the quality of these features that decide how good the rpg game is.

I'll use another comparison;

Morrowind is like a gorgeous high price hooker who had philosophy classes while skyrim is just a cheap,  lobotomized, short legged whore with oversized fake tits that's hidding behind too much fucking makeup.  And its's all capitalism fault. Which is of course poeple fault.

+1

It's not only hand holding, it's to the detriment of the game

I recently let a relative play my Skyrim to see how it was. She wanted t try out the combat and decided to do so by going on a killing spree in Solitude.

Any amusement gained from this was instantly ruined by over half of the NPCs in the area being immortal, and not only immortal but in the most obnoxious way possible. At the very least if they remained unconscious until you left the area or something that'd be a bit more workable.

But no! They bleed out and come back, bleed out and come back, bleed out and come back.

It is so damn ridiculous to be a high level god, slaying guards left and right but Mr. level 1 peasant keeps coming back to punch me in the face. What were they thinking?

While you can indeed place some blame on Bethesda here, you can't fault them completely.  Killing the quest givers pretty much can ruin a game.  On one hand I can go along with you in complete agreement that if folks stupidly kill off someone they shouldn't, then too bad for them.  However, I also can see things from Bethesda's viewpoint of getting large amounts of angry feedback from folks who are pissed off that they have to start the entire game over because they stupidly killed off an NPC vital to completing one or more quests and were too retarded to make fallback saved games.  Coming from a support side making all NPC's kill-able would be a complete nightmare for them.  Why go through the headache?

Ultimately issues like this are why they created the construction kits.  You can, with a little bit of work, go through and remove the essential status from each and every NPC in your game and kill away (or not but know that you could).

Unless you bought the xbox or PS3 version.  If you did, then who really gives a crap about you, as modding won't be something you can do anyway.  Bethesda products are really meant to be played and enjoyed to their fullest with mods and that means PC only.  This is not a knock on consoles or their users, it is just the way it is with most of the Bethesda products.

My only real gripe on the essential NPC's deal is that after their quests are done their status should have been updated to make them kill-able.  To me that is pretty much laziness on their part.  However, I am sure that will be fixed by either the unofficial patches or some irked enough to rework the scripting.

I never claimed OFP had anything to do with RPGs (other than the kind you shoot), just that when it comes to the map itself, it sets a very good level of realism and proper scale, which modern games tend to fail at.

The one thing about Morrowind - factions had personality. Even without playing for several years, I could tell you what House Redoran (semi-honorable dudes), Hlaalu (assholes), and Telvanni (megalomaniacs) are like. Oblivion's Mage Guild and Fighter's Guild? Eh. Skyrim's Companions and Winterhold are a bit better, and the Dark Brotherhood almost got it down, but still don't have all that scheming, power-grabbing, conspiracies, plots-against-plots that Morrowind has. And that makes for a lot of missing ... character.

What happend to the OP's account being deleted ?

Anyway to reply to greg:

Actually it's pure laziness on bethesdas part, it's quite easy to have a 'respawn essential characthers' button or something, or hell just have the essential NPCs that 'die' get stuck under a doctor/healers care for a few ingame weeks/months.

It's because of that mentality of appeasing stupid people that we have warning labels that coffee is hot.
