Did steam force anyone else to update the game?

I had set Steam to offline mode pretty much since I got Skyrim early June and had Steam's internet access blocked in my firewall. Yet suddenly today overnight it wouldn't launch Skyrim until I was forced to update. Got an error saying can't launch because update incomplete. Last night all ok, this morning CTD on load, and then error after I tried to run without skse. Then I found out it was Steam blocking me.... really annoying.

What are my options? This is what I can think of:

Should I go with the newest version and deal with updating all the mods?

or

Revert back to the March version (already have a xEdit cleaned backup)? and then look into Steam emu if actual Steam doesn't want to play nice?

Both require effort on my part... I know smp isn't updated, who knows what else.

Oh man forgot all about that... I did that too but recently changed drives since I got a bigger SSD. Looks like reverting isn't very hard just copy/paste of backup data folders and exe.

Even if read only, steam could still force me to update? That's what happened today, it tried to force me but couldn't get data.

I will try to revert back, set read only, and tick the only update when launched option in steam.

I keep it offline at all times as well as setting it to download at 16kps and only update between 5 to 6 AM which is when I'm never online.  If I ever need to update something, I change the download speed from 16kps to unlimited.

Got it working just by replacing the updated folder with my backup, pretty easy. Question is why steam forced me to update? Is it because I had blocked Steam client from updating for a while now?

@Dallas - read OP, I've been in offline...  only thing I can think of is when I created a new steam folder when switching to a larger SSD drive. Still why break my game 4-5 days after update?

This actually happened to a friend who was playing a similar mod build to me.  They just logged in a few days ago and it booted to the main menu but then gave them an error before crashing. Far as i know they have skyrim se set to only update when run, did help them set up mostly everything. it kinda confused us both. atm they have mods uninstalled tell things get updated enough to work again.

Mine was a surprisingly easy fix, had to replace new version with backup. No need to stop playing because of this issue. I think it was either caused by moving steam install folders or me blocking steam from updating its software.
