Blender works, but you need to export import the object in FBX format.

So you should find a tool that converts the NIFs in FBX format.

Outfit studios also works well with files and can be used to weight paint and rig a file for you . First you'll have to get the file into blender and then pose it to the skyrim body, Export the posed pieces out of blender in .OBJ format and then load them into outfit studios using the start new project and then load each .OBJ file into outfit studios till all pieces are in outfit studios. Scale the whole outfit down at the same time and also rotate and adjust the mesh to the correct area. Click the bone tab and select all bones you want to use and then click all outfit pieces and then copy selected weights and then transfer selected weights and use the sliders to adjust the body to the best fit and export with reference so the body you adjusted gets exported with the file. Open the nif and set the texture pathway with the texture files from the model and convert the texture files to .DDS format if they are not converted.

Was looking for a mesh program that's free and has easy porting so every thing can be done in one program. That isn't blender because as nice as it is it can not port good uv,s or bones. The names get messed up that have [this] in there name. That means only custom bones names don't get messed up. Plus it flips normles every now and then. And I still haven't looked as animations but with messed up bone names how could it work.  Sure there is work around but it's a lot of work plus it is about a 90 to 10 the uv,s will even work at all.
