Cheat bugs in Oblivion!

Either I'm a bit slow or I live under a rock, but after playing Oblivion for ages I've just discovered that there are ways to cheat in Oblivion by using various bugs in the game.  I was reading through the unofficial Wiki mostly because I'd had a break away from the game for about three years because life happened and they were mentioning all these ways to scam the game into getting more items and all manner of other things that I'd never heard of.

After reading all that I found myself asking, 'But why?'  If you're going to play a game why would you use these cheats?  I know cheat 'god item' mods have been around for years which don't interest me at all, but with a game like Oblivion I want to face the challenges and figure them out,  take the hits and have to work out ways to get past obstacles and boss creatures.  Plainly some players do use these cheats as a matter of course, but I certainly don't want to use them.

Cheating by otherwise legitimate means is an exciting game on its own. It's fun.. especially when you discover it yourself.

My favorite one is climb into high places using paintbrushes. Plus the classic skooma jumps. Plus getting the 100% Resist Magic shield in Arena using the Staff of Worms. Plus every other dirty trick that envolves the Staff of Worms.

For Morrowind I love the Seyda Neen super jump to Balmora. I even actively practiced it. You know, the one featured in the [in]famous beat Morrowind in 4 minutes video. Well, super jump itself is legal, but entering the South Wall Cornerclub just before you're mashed to a pulp by the ground is... cheesy... at best...

For a while I even refused to install uop just because I wanted to use the various dirty tricks.

Besides, the boundary between cheat & cheese & powergaming can be very blurry at times. For example, should the act of making super potions in Morrowind considered to be a cheat? Or just cheesy? Or totally legal? (cheat or not btw, it's canon)

The boring players will say it's a cheat because they don't like it. Any GM in his right mind would not let you make Fortify Luck 1000 pts potion even if the book would imply it can be done, in this light it's a cheese. Munchkins will say it's legal because it can be done in game therefore permitted. I've run some friendly roleplay campaigns in RL, and when I do I tend to allow at least some cheesy activities if they like it. Video or pen and paper, gaming is all about fun.

Yes I could not believe the paintbrushes trick and it wasn't until I saw it done on a YouTube video that I could get my head around it.  Having been well grounded in other types of fantasy games and having chain read the Lord of the Rings 10 times in my teens I suppose I have too much of a roleplayer gene to use these legitimate cheats myself.  BUT that doesn't mean I want to get all twisted up about it and stop anyone else from using them.

I'd forgotten how good some of the books in Morrowind were for a good read.  Just lately I've been rereading some of the books in Oblivion to help along my immersion in the game.  I never got into potion making in Morrowind and it's only in Oblivion that I've started having characters that were alchemists.  Some poisons are a little too much of a free gift though since it's possible to buy some ingredients from the Oblivion realms for little money without the risk of actually going and getting them yourself.

I have never heard of that one.  Plainly I do live under a rock.  I only played Morrowind for hundreds of hours and I played without cheating/using bugs because I didn't know there were any.

lol... fun times.

edit -

huh? I can't seem to find the exact video.... or my memory is wrong... there are 4 minutes videos alright but they all jump from Balmora...

Is there something not right in my head or what? :P

Wow!  I wouldn't have believed it possible.  Thanks for that movomo.

My own Morrowind characters were too much the tourist wanting to explore everywhere on the map and letting the main quest slip their minds.

Nice.  Believe it or not my characters are quite happy to read books sometimes instead of adventuring.  Thanks for the links.

I loaded the classics into the CS and made some of them skill books just to keep things interesting.

The book jackets look great.

There are all the Morrowind/Daggerfall books out there for Oblivion if you look....plus numerous others.

You can d/l book containers...looks like a row of books. I put these things in my various houses with a random selection of the various books...respawning.

I should do a mod on the Bravil House Basement mod I use and convert it to something more suitable for a scholar/bookworm/researcher type character.  Those book containers sound absolutely perfect because the one thing that put me off doing something like this before was the thought of individually placing hundred of books.

And I've been a bit naughty because I've just introduced a huge thread drift into my own thread.  Hopefully the moderators won't beat me too severely.

In the CS, just build new containers and point them to the new meshes...then you put some random book spawns inside that include your new books as well as the old ones. Set to respawn if you want a steady supply of new books...uncheck to have a safe container for your books. Place in your homes as desired.

Brilliant.  That is just what I wanted.  Thank you very much for the link.

Trainer is excellent.

Um........ I don't want to be impolite, but I'm actually the most unfetishy person you'll ever meet.  I'm also so close to being asexual it isn't funny.  The only person I very nearly gave my heart to was a woman who was asexual and I loved for the fact that she was not remotely interested in sex, but loved having good and close friends she could trust.

Annnnd I'm also thin as a rail so I tend to only play female characters who are the same body shape as me.

But otherwise those basements looked good and if I did download them I'd have to delete everything from the mod that wasn't actually the basement itself and start again.

I wasn't implying that...lol. It's a really good cellar and the combat trainer makes it worth it. Great for upping your blade/blunt/block/etc. Some outfits are for AA cuppers, btw...not just roller derby blocking guards with big melons.

Ok then sorry,- my apologies for jumping to all the wrong conclusions.  A good combat trainer would be useful and that cellar/basement looks really good and roomy.  The one I'm using at present is a bit cramped and needs a lot of rearranging to be properly useful.
