Santr Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 Considering that a) the game becomes choppy only in cities and lowering the game's 'Object Fade' slider gains me the most FPS, which meshes should I run through PyFFI? Architecture? Clutter? Rocks? Plants? Something else? All of the above?
movomo Posted December 31, 2012 Posted December 31, 2012 All. Except animated meshes & hair, head clothings. All of them. For vanilla bsa, it's fairly safe to do one-click pyffi. But you may want to check yourself carefully for modded files. Don't forget to back up before doing it and do not delete backup archive until you are pretty sure it's stable.
Santr Posted January 1, 2013 Author Posted January 1, 2013 Thanks for the tips. PyFFIing all the relevant meshes didn't help, unfortunately. I'm guessing most of them were already optimized (UOP, Better Cities). Damn Gamebryo, struggling with a bunch of simple sticks and rocks.
movomo Posted January 1, 2013 Posted January 1, 2013 PyFFI may be helpful, but may be not. The very first thing you have to do (and the very last thing you want to do) is lowering graphic options. Or use the stutter remover, streamline, etc. It seems your memory is not sufficient from what I gather? Its cause could be either due to too many npcs or related to cpu load. But don't trust me too much
Santr Posted January 2, 2013 Author Posted January 2, 2013 But don't trust me too much Alright, I won't. Well, for some reason, only lowering 'Object Fade' gives me back FPS. Which is all about fences, rocks, carts and similar stuff. Lowering 'Actor Fade' does nothing to FPS that I can notice. Memory would be mostly taxed by resource size, and I optimize all textures I install (even resize them down to 2048 if bigger), so that should be taking care of that. My video card (AMD 5770) has 1GB of memory, my RAM is 8GB and I've made Oblivion.exe 2GB-aware (or is it 4GB?). Ahhh, I don't know what else I can do. It seems Gamebryo and I just hate each other.
gregathit Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 Oblivion unfortunately is an old game and the bottleneck you may be up against is the CPU. The game will only use one core too. Are you running a 32 bit OS or a 64bit?
Santr Posted January 2, 2013 Author Posted January 2, 2013 I'm running 64-bit Windows 7. And the CPU is a slightly old 4-core Intel (Quad 2 Core 2.something GHz, IIRC). Hmm, wouldn't the CPU load lessen when lowering the 'Actor Fade' slider, though? My mod list is a bit long, but maybe there's something obvious that I could remove to improve performance (just in cities)? 00 Oblivion.esm 01 CosmeticOverhaulPack.esm 02 Beautiful People 2ch-Ed.esm 03 All Natural Base.esm [Version 1.34] 04 Armamentarium.esm [Version 1.35] 05 Better Cities Resources.esm [Version 5.2.3] 06 Fundament.esm [Version ision] 07 cssBase.esm [Version 1.1] 08 CM Partners.esm 09 x117race.esm 0A CustomSpellIcons.esm 0B RealisticLeveling.esm 0C Lovers with PK.esm 0D LoversCreature.esm ++ HrmnsOblivionScriptOptimizationv1.0.esp 0E Invisibility Ring.esp 0F Beautiful_Women_NiceOnly.esp ** Beautiful_Women_DB_Addon.esp ** Beautiful_Women_SI.esp ** Beautiful_Women_Vampires_50.esp ** Beautiful_Women_NotSoNice_Bonus.esp ** Handsome_Gents_Addon.esp ** Handsome_Gents_DB_Addon.esp ** Handsome_Gents_SI.esp ** Handsome_Gents_Vampires_50.esp ** Handsome_Gents_Bonus.esp 10 Unofficial Oblivion Patch.esp [Version 3.4.2] ++ BPPP-UOP.esp 11 UOPS Additional Changes.esp 12 Oblivion Citadel Door Fix.esp 13 DLCShiveringIsles.esp 14 Unofficial Shivering Isles Patch.esp [Version 1.5.1] ++ USIPS Additional Changes.esp 15 Better Cities .esp [Version 4.7.0] 16 Natural_Habitat_by_Max_Tael.esp 17 TIE.esp [Version 1.48] ** TIE Vwalk.esp 18 All Natural.esp [Version 1.34] 19 All Natural - gregathit Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 Yes, you would greatly benefit from reducing the number of esm\esp files you have enabled. You could easily whack a chunk out by using Tes4Gecko to combine the small armor\clothing esp files. Take a look at getting ride of some plugins that are script intensive or that you just don't use. A faster CPU would help you some, but pairing down your load order a bit would help you more.
Santr Posted January 2, 2013 Author Posted January 2, 2013 Well, cutting down the load list by 42 (uninstalling and merging) didn't gain any FPS, but hopefully the game will crash a bit less. Thanks for suggesting TES4Gecko, I forgot all about it. On the up side, I did manage to get FPS under control with Streamline's Streamsmooth and Streamsight. So... success, I suppose.
gregathit Posted January 2, 2013 Posted January 2, 2013 Streamline and OSR (oblivion stutter remover) are both excellent tools!
varenne Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 Streamline and OSR (oblivion stutter remover) are both excellent tools! I agree with gregathit on OSR, never tried Streamline. OSR I feel was the one addition that helped me optimize and stabilize my FPS. I currently have an ATI/XFX Radeon HD 6770 1GB VRAM. I hard clamp my FPS at 40 using OSR and I'm able to run 4096 body textures with no problems, on an older machine than yours; 2 core, 4GB RAM. (FSB is another important spec to look at.) I've only moderately overclocked my V-card. There are other even more technical settings in the OSR ini that you can adjust, which I also did. Odds are they would be different for your setup though. Google is your friend there. If you're using the Catalyst ATI/AMD software check those settings too. I remember going away from the default settings, even for my previous ATI card. They are less than optimal for Oblivion as I recall. You can easily spend hours, even days messing with various settings and creating test profiles in Catalyst. And in another thread are links to already PyFFIed mesh sets, I forget which one or ones it was, in case you haven't found them already.
movomo Posted January 5, 2013 Posted January 5, 2013 Streamline is a good company too. Many folks blame Streamline 3.1 that it makes their Oblivion even stutters, it's a half true, half false. Without the 3.1 patch, and more importantly without proper ini settings it wouldn't be a good idea to use streamline 3.1 beta. But once you manage to set up a good ini settings, it's good. It is compatible with OSR. Those two covers different domains. OSR is better as far as FPS control is concerned, so you'll probably want to disable the StreamSmooth feature in sl.ini.
