Creation Kit won't allow me to change npc's hair

I want to use a hair style from cazy and demoness FH hairs on a follower mod I downloaded from nexus, but whenever I go to edit her hair in the CK the only option I have when I click on her hair head part and access the drop-down box is "DEFAULT" and nothing else. Am I loading the mods in the CK in the wrong order or something? I've tried loading the hair mod as the active file, and I've also tried loading the follower mod as the active file, as well as trying other follower mods, but they all just give me some form of default option with nothing else available.cknootheroptions.png.6833b2e97101a840fa0af7adfbd7ed64.png

are you using a custom race for this npc? This is the only time this has happened to me is when I am using a custom race. Also is the hairstyle you downloaded in a esp file or a esm?

Ok so with the hair mod, for it to be a master you need to make it a esm or us WryeBash to flag it as a esm, there are many tutorials on how to do this. That way you can use the hair file as a master.

On the custom race, open it up in the CK and find the race ( the picture below shows where to find the Races in the object window, the green arrow

In the race box of your custom race go to the Face Data Tab, once there check the areas I have circled in green

Make sure they are not set to none. If they are put a vanilla hair in them

Also make sure the 2 boxes are uncheck that say:

  • Overlay head part list
  • Override head part list

You can bypass all that just by duplicate the hair and head part you want to use from the hair mod while your mod is active,

add the head part to your races head parts or if it has it's own form list just edit the reserved races in the duplicated head part so it uses that race,

(set head part to unplayable so it doesn't show in character creation, not required but it prevents duplicated head parts from clogging list),

now head part and hair are listed for your npc but no hard master is required you just must make sure those mods are listed as dependencies if you are putting it out for others to use otherwise they will be missing textures. When you build facegen duplicated hair mesh will be in your nif.

The picture was much appreciated, and I was able to turn the hair mod into a master, however when i try to change the follower mod race's hair it only gives me the option of "NONE".cknoneistheonlyoption.PNG.b801d47e987c7431adb181b681dd2316.PNG

sorry, i didn't see your reply since i didn't refresh the page before posting my results, but how exactly do i add head parts and/or edit the reserved races? i'm gonna be honest, i'm extremely new to using the creation kit so it's all pretty confusing to me.

No, the character is female.

ok in the picture you just sent me, on the top of that box is a twp check boxes, right now you have male checked, so check the female box and see if you can change the hair

It has something to do with the hairline , Send me the link to the Npc mod you are trying to change so I can open it up and take a look at it

duplicate by right click any reference and select duplicate.

This is extremely easy but hard to explain without making screenshot and I dont' have access to anything right now. You only need to duplicate the head parts, the head parts extra part, and the form list it uses. Then edit so duplicate head part links to duplicate extra part, and edit duplicate form id list with your npcs race, then add the duplicate form list to the head part as allowed races.

That is all it takes a couple of minutes and head part will now be available for your npc.

Yeah, all that duplication does sound pretty complicated and confusing without screenshots, but I was able to get the hair onto the follower using the linked article above, however now the follower's face is all messed up! I'm pretty sure this is that dark face bug if i'm not mistaken, but whenever i try to ctrl+F4 the facegen data, the creation kit tells me it can't do it properly.

click on the follower in game, "set npcweight xx" then disable, enable, that should fix the grey face

xx = a number between 0 and 100

but whenever i try to ctrl+F4 the facegen data

why are you doing that?

open head nif

open hair nif

copy paste hair mesh in head nif

rename hair mesh to whatever it is called in that head nif

delete original hair mesh

done, without having anything to do in crap kit or whatever, that is unlikely to generate whatever was done in racemenu or ece for that follower

as for loading hair x mod on a custom race

search race armor in the useless custom race, it have nord race, for armor x mod to load on that useless custom race

near that, you have race morph, or race headpart, or something like that

put nord race there, you now have ks hair available for that useless custom race, and eye mod x, and warpaint mod y, anything available to nord race

It is someone new to modding, do you just make a post to try to sound smarter than others, this is the second arrogant post I have seen from you for some reason this week. When someone is trying to learn and has never done it before, either give them a walk thru or don't comment at all instead of trying to talk down to someone who has no experience in it, unless of course it makes you feel better to try and sound smart SMH!
