nightwing100 Posted March 7, 2019 Posted March 7, 2019 I just found out the that both Mortal Kombat 11 and Ijustice 2 were run on Unreal Engine 3, an engine that was came out in 2006, a 13 years old engine, yet it is capable to making this. Â Â An even more crazier fact, the mobile version of Injustice 2 were run on Unreal 4, while the console and pc version run on Unreal 3. It just show how much we don't really fully undertsnad how game engine works, next time if anyone want to criticize a video game, try to avoid criticize game engine.

Let's ignore that most of the times people complain about the use of certain engines because of other reasons (like performance, stability or technical limitations issues that would result of the use of certain engines for certain games).

The underlying engine has been recoded in large parts on many levels. The new beast is nothing like the old beast. It's like a broom, first you replace the brush, then you replace the handle, then it's not the same broom any more. That's what happened in large parts to the Unreal engine. Of course, there are still some aspects which have changed very little, Unrealscript engine which was basically only increased upon, the savegame/loadgame handling.. and many of the internal game counters and even AI routines are based on very similar code to that time, some of it close to the original code. But the actual render part (relevant to his thread and remark) has definitely undergone major overhauls in its years of development.

This is exactly what several of us are talking about we complain about a game engine being "old." Some companies just slap a new coat of paint on the broom to make it look better without once ever repairing or replacing faulty or broken pieces. Eventually the whole piece just falls apart because the duct tape and putty fixes can't handle what it's being forced to do.

"The engine is old therefore must be replace!!!" that kind of people.

Oh yeah, other factors that we don't understand. Sure, apart from graphics, scripting, collisions, rendering, sounds, animations, AI, mem manager, thread manager, and so on, which are all parts of a game engine, there must be other stuff interfering with well known games that crashed or had bugs well known from past titles with the same engine.

Engine is not just one software, it has multiple middlewares that is possible causing the issues, and not the engine itself.

I know, I just mentioned several components which are part of what we know as a game engine. If you can't find the issues there it must be a really well hidden factor.
