angiebaby23 Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 Not really a tech support question I guess, more like just an asking for advice one. Sorry if this is in the wrong place or not allowed, just delete this puppy if so. So I think the hard drive in my 6 yo laptop is wanting to fail. Ugh. Anyone have any advice on a good, INEXPENSIVE AS POSSIBLE new one? I'm doing plenty of research on my own, just wondered if anyone had any suggestions off the top of the head. TIA EDIT: Anyone have an opinion on this one? https://www.amazon.com/Acer-Aspire-i5-8250U-GeForce-A515-51G-515J/dp/B075KCJHMD/ref=as_li_ss_tl?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1519699574&sr=1-8&keywords=ACER+ASPIRE+E5&linkCode=sl1&tag=laptops4study-20&linkId=cce6aa3452f4be66ed8087e5a55afb1d Acer Aspire 5, 15.6" Full HD, 8th Gen Intel Core i5-825OU, GeForce MX150, 8GB DDR4 Memory, 256GB SSD, A515-51G-515J
Guest Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 Moved to general tech support. What is your budget? And how much data you need to store? For about $100 you can get a decent size SSD drive.

I'm very computer not-savvy, so forgive me I don't know what you mean exactly by how much data I need to store. I hope this is what you're asking: I need a computer that will let me play S4 smoothly and surf the net. Basically that's all I do. Oh and watch movies (Netflix, Amazon, etc) I don't play any other games except Zuma's Revenge sometimes haha. This laptop has a 500GB HD, and currently it says I have 209 GB free of 439GB. It's 6 yo this month. For about $100 you can get a decent size SSD drive. Um, is that like an add on to my current computer? LOL sorry, I blush for my ignorance. Thanks for responding.
Yinkle Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 What he means is that you could replace the failing hard drive with a solid state drive for way less than the cost of a new laptop and greatly improve the machine's performance
Guest Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 If you have a laptop you need to replace the drive. Or you can add an external drive through USB (but it will be slow, so I do not recommend it.) To understand what drives you can put I may need to know the model of your laptop, so I can find around what the options are. Be also aware that to mount the drive you need to unscrew something, unplug the old drive and screw in the new one. Not very complex but you may want some help from friends around you to do it, in case you never did something like that before. Also, be aware that replacing the drive will require to reinstall Windows. So you may need a USB flash drive with at least 4Gb to do this process.

Is that what you needed? Yeah, I've never done anything before like taking a computer apart, but I might be able to find someone to help me with that. Yet another dumb question, how do I reinstall Windows?? I don't have a copy of the OS, which is Windows 7 Pro. I do have an EHD, but I've only used it as a backup medium.
Ernest Lemmingway Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 What do you need the laptop to do, first of all? Is it a work rig? Gaming rig? Media viewer?

Guest Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 OK, you should have somewhere on your laptop a code from Microsoft that is to activate Windows. It is something like ABCDE-123FG-HYZ99-... I am not sure if a Win7 code can activate Win10, that is the only OS you can download now. I am checking what are the SSD possibilities for your laptop (yes the model you posted is what I was looking for.)
Guest Posted February 28, 2019 Posted February 28, 2019 OK, it is quite simple to replace the HD in your laptop. Just unscrew the back and the HD is accessible with ease. You can remove the old one and install a new one. As model you can use any SATA SSD drive. For one of about 500Gb you should pay around a hundred dollars. Here is a picture of where the HD is:

I'll have to ask around and see who might be able to do this for me, but the local community college has a computer dept, so that seems a good place to start haha. I appreciate the help very much!

I forgot to mention one important thing. The SATA SSD drive should have a form factor of 2"5 (two inches and half) or you will not be able to mount it inside the laptop.

Things like streaming video from Netflix and Amazon is not that demanding. My laptop has an Intel Celeron N3450 1.1 GHz CPU and Intel HD Graphics GPU (fairly lower-end hardware) and it can stream just fine. Surfing the net is likewise smooth. Sims 4 requires a modest setup to run smoothly (2.0+ GHz CPU, 4 GB RAM, 2 GB VRAM). Probably not that expensive but IDK for certain. My laptops are strictly no frills and built custom, free of any crap major manufacturers just love to slip into mass-produced machines. Aside from whatever Microsoft hard-codes into Windows.
