Nexus Vortex or MO2?

Recommended Posts

Hi, I've started again to install Skyrim again and I've seen that in some places they recommend Vortex.
I have always used MO but the old version although I have read that it has been a bit outdated.
I am someone who usually tries many mods and desistalandolos.
What do you recommend?

PS: sorry for my bad englisth

There will be all sorts of opinions expressed here so you can expect that you will hear both wonderful paeans of praise (I hope your translator can handle that) and godawful denunciations of each and every mod manager. Some of the more experienced modders even insist that using a mod manager at all is an error. Therefore, do NOT expect anything approaching a consensus.

With all that said I have, and plan to continue to, used NMM (Nexus Mod Manager (now available on GitHub but not Nexus, cool huh?) I like it because it does not have all the bells and whistles found on MO and Vortex. From my reading on the technical threads MO (including MO2) have some longstanding issues (preeminent among them is Fore's denunciation and insisting that MO does not work properly with FNIS). Moduseonly expresses what I have heard a great deal of as well. While I still believe that Vortex is likely to be the future of mod managers it is still in beta and appears to have many of the glitches that often occur when things have that status.

I can talk on behalf of MO2.

There is no practical issue between MO2 and FNIS. They are working fine together, from user point of view. That argument was more of a conflict between developers.

I just swapped to MO2 2.2.0 beta8 from their Discord server. Looks great and works great. Already ran it for Skyrim, Skyrim SE and Fallout 4.

NMM is currently the least stable mod manager. It's problems does not affect all players, but it is known to suffer from a bug that causes it to loose mod data. Several larger project authors - like kinggath for FO4 Sim Settlements - have directly warned about NMM being able to loose assets and resources over installation.

I am sure that there would be 100 people ready to tell me that they haven't seen that issue. That's fine. If bug would be persistent, then it would have been already nailed and nuked. It would be easy to find 100 other people telling that they have fought enough with this issue. Just like in Skyrim: facing bugs and problems depend on conditions and bad luck.

Vortex is fine, but it works with different logic than MO2 or NMM. Vortex uses symlinks, compared to MO2 using virtual Data folder and NMM tossing everything in to Data folder. It is a good tool, once you wrap your head around it. Most people telling me that they can't stand it just didn't like the logic behind Vortex. Again, for every 100 guys telling that Vortex is trash there is another 100 guys telling how easy and intuitive tool it is.

I would recommend MO2. It is most developed tool at the moment and has a very wide team of developers and testers working with it.

Vortex remains as a good alternative. If you like how it functions, then there really isn't much that you couldn't do with it. Of course it does not display resource conflicts like MO2 does and plugin handling can sometimes require fiddling with LOOT sorting rules.

From technical point of view, all three managers have their benefits and challenges. I wouldn't recommend going back to NMM, due to constant issues with it, but if it works best for you then it does work best for you.
