visagezero Posted January 12, 2019 Posted January 12, 2019 After about 5 hours of investigation, save cleaning, mod ITM cleaning, and selective disabling, I can't figure out for the life of me what is causing my Skyrim to suddenly freeze around a select area. The game is not crashing to desktop. The screen freezes, followed by a few stutters of audio, then silence. I then have to force Skyrim.exe to close, as it stops responding. The crash occurs north of Pinewatch, so I think it has something to do with Lakeview Manor and Hearthfire. I have not done any questsions nor visited the region yet. I can safely move around anywhere else in Falkreath. The weirdest thing is - when I use the console command 'tcl' to disable collision, my game does not freeze. I can look around the area and see that there is a necromancer's altar and wild animals. I use a heavily modded setup, but my fps is locked at 60 and usually roams around 30 in dense forests. My SKSE memory blocks log is not full. Why would collision cause my game to suddenly stop working? Does this have to do with navmeshes?

Without knowing what mods you have which might affect that particular area it is pointless to speculate. I'm first trying to speculate on what kind of issue could be causing this in the first place. The clues I've already discovered limit the possibilities. A clear CTD would imply something script-based or an animation error from FNIS. I figured the fact that I can console 'tcl' and fly around the area without any issues was a huge clue as to what was going on. Perhaps it could do with something such as blood textures at the nearby cultists altar, or the random events that were spawning down the road.

CTDs are, 99% of the time, memory-related. Scripts seldom, if ever, cause CTDs and neither do animation errors. So Sherlock, shall we carry on with the useless speculation or shall we take some practical steps towards solving the problem? For what it's worth, my guess would be that the butler did it.
visagezero Posted January 12, 2019 Author Posted January 12, 2019 Found the source of the problem, a mod called More Accurate Collision that I installed last month. Disabling the esp fixed the issue. There have been several reports of corrupted meshes causing CTD during quests and around Falkreath. Its a bit of a stretch to try and edit commonly used meshes around Skyrim without there being countless bugs.
