akayds Posted October 19, 2018 Posted October 19, 2018 Hi, As title says, I'm looking to build a new pc, In general, I don't really play games which are extremely demanding graphically. But, I don't want it to be short when it comes to heavily modded skyrim. 1. The first thing I'm wondering is if it's worth to go for a 2k monitor instead of 1080p since it will increase the price of all my other parts since i want IPS, free/G sync and high refresh rate. 2. I think i will for for an AMD build, Ryzen 2700x with fast memory, how much memory should I target for heavily modded skyrim? 3. I can save money if i buy a RX 580 and a freesync monitor, so I'm thinking about it but I am worried on whether or not it is powerful enough. I won't care as much about hitting high fps on skyrim since I'll have freesync. My goal is no stutter and smooth af gameplay. And high performance in my other non demanding games. Tell me what you think. Thanks.
Lodakai Posted October 19, 2018 Posted October 19, 2018 I would wait until black friday/cyber monday... it's just around the corner.
Guest Posted October 19, 2018 Posted October 19, 2018 Oldrim cannot really use too much memory, SSE seems to use up to 8Gb. But memory is cheap enough, I will go with 16 or 32 Gb.
scipher99 Posted October 19, 2018 Posted October 19, 2018 You can find GTX 1080ti cards for around $600 now if that's in your budget. I would skip the 2K monitor and go for a 4K instead as they are too close in price not to go 4k. 8GB would be your minimum target for memory and 16GB would be recommended as I find myself hitting 10GB with SSE and 468 mods running plus SMP. Oh and remember the higher the resolution the more VRAM your card will need so I would say 8GB of VRAM on your video card for 2K and higher if you run 4K. I hope that helps some happy shopping.
Sarge Misfit Posted October 19, 2018 Posted October 19, 2018 While I'm not familiar with the CPU chip you mentioned, I have recently gone from a 6-core processor to a dual core and there's a big difference. I'm using the same video card and same amount of RAM, 8Gb. I'm now running 191 mods, down from 255. Skyrim is just not running as well as it was.

GTX 1080ti seems to be around 700$ then i need to pay the nvidia tax for gsync monitor. On top of that 4k will be much more expansive and demanding for a questionable difference. I think I'll stay at 2k at most... I was really hoping for a good amd gpu... i guess gtx 1060 is an option too for the same price, wonder if it would run 2k decently though
Metalsaber Posted October 19, 2018 Posted October 19, 2018 Once you increase the resolution a bunch the game really requires a lot of hardware if you plan on running a bunch of 4K mods. I know that I'm running 2 1080s in SLI @ 3440x1440. I can play above 60fps just about everywhere minus the terrible Bethesda hiccups. However its really hard to take video @ 3440x1440 60fps. That really requires planning out video capture areas to allow it to work. So i would not go 4K. To much horsepower requirements. I would get a 2560x1440 monitor. A 1080ti should be had for a good price. Plus it has enough VRAM to run a lot of 4K textures. I would get at minimum of 16GB of memory. If you can afford more, I would go 32GBs especially if you like to multitask or use applications that utilize as much memory as possible.

As far as the 1080ti goes I just bought a second one for $625 after tax from Fry's electronics due to my waterblock on my second one leaking and shorting one out. I get about 120-130 fps with dual 1080ti's. Stay away from the 20xx series as they are overpriced trash with zero support for ray trace even though the 2070 is around $599+ . Edit: you could always wait for next year as Nvidia and AMD will both have 7nm tech rolling out.
flatliner10 Posted October 24, 2018 Posted October 24, 2018 If you are on a budget, the Ryzen 2600(x) is good enough for Gaming, the 2700x offers a bit more headroom for later titles which can actually make use of it. If you play a lot of Older games, they prefer clockspeed, and don't use much cores, i would aim for the x-Variant. It should not matter (for older games) if you get the 2600x or the 2700x, they are only 100 Mhz apart, X or non-X makes a difference of 200 Mhz (Stock) They both come with (surprisingly decent) stock-coolers, with the 2700ers even boosting fancy Controllable RGB Cristmas Lights (if you're into that sort of bling), If you plan on overclocking however they don't give you much headroom and you need to grab a decent aftermarket cooler instead, same goes for when you plan on getting one of these poorly designed all-glass cases with no airflow. As for RAM its rather expensive right now (even though prices start to go down), 2x8 (16 GB) is fine if money is tight, but i would try to go for 2x16 (32), avoid using 4 Modules on Ryzen, the Board might need to slow down their speed to get them working, depending in the Board and UEFI. Don't cheap out on it either, aim for DDR4-3200 with as low of a latency you can afford. Graphics card's are a pain in the butt right now. a 1060 is fine for Budget Gaming@1080p, but if you want to trow high-res Textures on a big screen, none of the cards below a 1080Ti will do do, not because their GPU is weak, but because of a Memory bandwidth bottleneck. BTW a good OEM GTX 1080Ti is about as fast as the (ridiculously expensive) RTX 2080 (minus the Raytracing Gimmic). A new Genereation of cards both of nvidia AND AMD is expectec early next year. So... a 1060 (budget), 1080Ti (should last you quite a while), or a cheap AMD (pay ~150 and play the waiting Game until next year, hoping for better options) would be my recommendations.
Aldebaran Posted October 29, 2018 Posted October 29, 2018 I can't recommend PCPartPicker enough if you're building a new rig. It makes price and functionality comparison so much easier, and the people on the site are good about answering questions if you have them. I built out the parts list for my current setup on this site, and it saved me a ton of legwork and a bit of money. I also second the 'wait for Black Friday/Cyber Monday' advice. You're likely to pick up some good deals, especially if you already know what you're looking for. Speaking of deals, I don't have a link for it to hand, but search for the SlickDeals app. You can set it up to send you notifications when something you're looking for goes on sale. I just grabbed a great deal on a pair of 16GB DDR4 sticks that way. Best of luck with your new computer!
