Game will not advance

After I was forced to update, my game became very unstable. So I rolled and that was when the trouble started. To try and find out why I can not get past the scene with the power armor (this is what we see when first loading in). when I tried to make  anew character. So I uninstalled and reinstalled only to find the same thing happening. I tried without my mods.

I looked for ways to get this game to run and so far nothing has helped. I am now on my sixth attempt at installing on my laptop. I also updated my windows and did basic computer maintenance to ensure that this could work.

So I come here, and ask what am I doing wrong, that my game is completely unplayable. Is this due to computer lag or something else? I am beyond frustrated and I am know thinking about just leaving a game I love. So I come here and asking for help.

If you already tried reinstalling and trying a new game. Then you may have some difficult problems.

But if you reinstalled and used an old save, then it can be just the same that is broke.

If you can, check for a older save if the problem persist. If not just discard the last saves that have this problem.

What could be some of the problems?

No clues. Sorry.

Your description is quite generic, so it can be due to many different problems, and most of them not easy to fix.

Best thing to do is to recover a state where you can play.

I got a serious question, is it possible that I could have received an empty install? What I mean by this, I am currently downloading on a new laptop. I took a look at the place where I can download from, and it was from Detroit. However, the install didnt take long. On the new laptop, I chose Pittsburg as my download location, and it is taking much longer.

Also I have noticed for a awhile now that no matter what I watch on Youtube, I have an I-beam in the upper left corner. And even reading posts I click on a post and I am able to write without hitting the reply button first. To me it seems as though there is a huge computer issue with my one laptop.

I will update if I can run the game from the new laptop. A good sign is there isn't any .ini files in my documents, which to me means it is a completely fresh install.

I heard back from Beth and they told me "due to my computer not meeting the minimum requirements they are unable to help me." Yet before this update I was able to play just fine. Which means their update broke any chance for me to play on my laptop.

On the new one I am able to play, and I have taken steps to insure that it never again updates, I switched to download whenever I launch, plus I have made sure to turn of steam. I am looking at other ways to block steams access to the internet.

Before it happens again:

  • You can make Fallout4.exe read-only (write-protect).
  • You can backup the Fallout4.exe (into an extra folder)
  • You can play FO4 when Steam is in offline mode.
  • You can always downgrade FO4 with Steam. (even your old savegame would work)

just nuke the game and start over. I've had no problems with a 200+ mod load order and updating so maybe it's entirely your fault for downloading shitty mods

I just did this :) I am hoping that the runtime is from my disk, and even if it isn't I can rollback to a previous version. I deleted every game file of Fo4, I kept Nexus and my mods, since they are a sperate entity. As an added bonus I have the game disk, but I do not know if steam will download the version from the disk or the updated one.

@Andy thank you for this, I will do this on my other laptop and hopefully this one as well.

Echo Base this is Rouge 2 I found them repeat I found them :)

I nuked from orbit and scorched earth on my FO4 game on this laptop, the very same Beth said did not meet the requirements. How I did this was I deleted the game directory and the ini files. I left nothing but Nexus and my mods in a safe spot. Now my FO4 game will never again will be updated, I have turned off steam and I have changed the launcher to read only- write protected. Thank you again Andy for this :)

While you you are in the process of re-installing all those mods.... consider switching to Mod Organizer 2.  It's far superior to NMM, i just about every way imaginable.  Most notably though, it does not install mods to the Fallout 4 game folder - instead it uses virtual folders outside of the game's path and merges in the mods and content at runtime.

This way, your game folder and files stay 100% clean and stock.

Yeah, NMM is literally one of the worst pieces of software I have ever encountered.
