Happening after fast travel/load door or just suddenly they lose tint?

NPC tint loss is often the first indication that varm limits have been reached, check enb memory settings, often times you get purple hair or pixelated skin but sometimes it just loads default race skin tint settings.

Otherwise, and probably more likely is mod or mods conflicting with data that facegen mesh and textures are installed from.

Open console, click on npc it should tell you name of esp that made last change to npc, verify that this esp file is the mod that also contains the facegen mesh and textures for this npc and that those files were not overwritten or modified. If you have conflicting npc data it often cause brown heads when any updates are made/ cell changes, player character update, etc...

ya so far its been after entering a new space cave/whiterun. i uninstalled the ENB i was using and going to try with just "i cant believe its not an ENB" and ENBoost. if it happens again ill try checking the npc to see if its a conflict. now that i think about it i probably shouldent have installed an ENB with 8gb or Ram and 1GB from my Gpu?

1GB of VRAM  - You need to follow the S.T.E.P guide, including ENBoost setup, to get yourself a stable game.

Just some quick points.

You do not need any of the Realistic Ragdoll esps as you are using XPMSE skeleton. You only needded one of them even if you weren't using that skeleton.

You don't need SL Nude Creatures if you are using the latest MNC.

That is 7 esps less right there.

Wintermyst has been succeeded by Summermyst.

Try 'Equip More Rings' instead of LH rings. That'll save another esp.

HDT will hammer your installation and resources.

How many armour mods do you need?

How many player homes?

Cut your coat according to your cloth. ?

thanks for the tips, i did follow the s.t.e.p guide when installing the enb, i hade a kinda stable game with 40+ fps.

but i seem to have caused an issue when i uninstalled the ENB and installed ICBINE im getting "failed to initialize renderer" and my resolutions are normal :/ i reset my ini files to so idk whats going on. uninstalled ICBINE3 and the mods it requierd. error is gone.

ok so after playing around with my mods and getting a more stable game i finally got the brown faces to pop up. the last mod to mess with lydia is the right one (the small housecarls mod) so idk. if it is a memory issue, is there anything i can do? all im running right now is ENBoost. i dont have any enb or graphic mods installed anymore. the game did set my default settings to ultra, ill try setting them to high and see if that helps.

Seems like you are still running low on memory. What is your default skin and does it ever go brown? If not you might want to replace the textures of the Small housecarls mod with something you can run without issue. I looked at the textures used in that mod and while they aren't too taxing I'm pretty sure they won't play nice with 1GB, if something has to go try replacing the normal maps(_msn.dds) and the tone maps(_sk.dds) with something more performance friendly.

The brown/black face is when low on memory.

4k textures and so on.

Just tone down a bit on that follower. Replace her textures with 2k or less.

I used to get that bug when running a lowly HD7750 with 1GB memory. It happened quite often, actually.

You have to optimise a lot to get acceptable performance with poor hardware. Forget ENB, use SweetFX or a Reshade with very little effects, but best stick with vanilla and use graphics card and monitor controls to improve contrast/saturation levels.

I had managed to get 40+fps in outdoor with SweetFX but lemme tell you, it was very, very tough to get it there and even then I had texture issues sometimes. Now I alternate between a RX580 and a GTX1080 and have no issues like this, but I still do have the data folder backup of the 7750 installation (I back up every data folder, my version of mod management). It is literally one-fifth the size of my current install and has a very short mod list.

Here's what you need to do:

1. Use DDSOpt or Ordenador to compress and optimise all textures. Nothing bigger than 1k for anything at all. You can use 2k normal maps or else you might get ugly shadow banding on the skin. You do need to learn a bit about where everything is kept and stored to effectively perform this operation - but it's what helped me the most when I started with this game.

2. Turn shadows to 'low' in the launcher and manually tweak the skyrimprefs.ini to remove self shadows. To reduce shadow flicker, max out the shadow blur as well (you can find these tweaks on the nVidia forums). Skyrim shadows are both performance-hungry and ugly, I don't know how they managed that. Oblivion had 1000% better shadows (and ran fine on ultra settings with the same card, but I digress).

3. Turn off AA, but keep AF at x4 or x8 setting. Tweak view sliders to reduce stress on the card - shorter view distances will help the texture memory keep up with the load. If you keep the launcher settings and hope the one-button solution fixes it, forget it. The game sets my RX580 to Very Low by default, and the 7750 used to default to Ultra where it choked. You have to be able to tweak each setting yourself, and you can make the game playable on low-end hardware just fine.

4. If you're installing a custom follower, run your texture optimiser once before launching the game, as a lot of these followers come with high-resolution textures. Same for armors, weapons and outfits.

Yes. Yes. And one more yes to this guy.

Only thing, I would keep FXAA switched on, I think that its edge blurring is very FPS friendly and it covers ugly ladders that are otherwise visible on plants, fences, trees, etc.

ok so thanks for the reply's. weird thing tho if its a memory thing will it fix itself without me closing the game? Lydia got her chocolate face again but i just wanted to play so i dident restart the game. about 20min later i walked over to her to have her hold a thing and her face was back to normal..

were would i get these performance friendly normal/tone maps got any recommendations? i use fair skin but i think most of my follower mods are standalone kinda things so they have there own files, were would i install them?

im not using an ENB im using ENBoost its different. sweetFX crashes my game.

so im running 40-60 FPS most times

1. ill try DDSOpt now, but can i use https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/57353?tab=files  ?

2. shadows are on low

3. i hade AA off and AF at 4, i just lowerd view sliders a little tho.

if there is a 2k option for a follower i download it. i cant really see much difference between 2k and 4k anyways :/

the main thing is for like small housecarls, they are using a custom body i think and i dont think i can just slap any texture on it.

Posted

There are only two kinds of body textures in the world of Skyrim modding, those that are based on the UNP UV map (which is also compatible with vanilla body) and the other on the CBBE UV map.

Every follower ever made has a body that is compatible with one or the other type of texture, because there are only these two kinds of bodies at the present moment. Almost any new body will also only be based on one of these two, and the body type will almost always be mentioned in the mod description. This allows us to (for example) mix normal, diffuse and specular maps to create very unique texture sets. And yes, I can slap them on in any combination I want as long as I use those that are designed for the correct body type - within reason, of course!

Obviously this specific mod has the issue of child-like characteristics so the body discussion will never actually surface in public - and you will anyway not be able to see the difference because the ugly bits resulting from any incorrect texture swap will be hidden by the dress - so even a 'wrong' texture may look fine.

In any case Ordenador has the option to resize all textures, you can simply use an exclude flag for *_msn.dds which will exclude the normal maps.

Good Luck. I know it's tough trying to optimise for a low-end setup but once you do, the knowledge gained will help you achieve very good results on more powerful machines as well.

Edit: just so you know, 2K is significantly more than Skyrim's default textures, IIRC most of the textures are either 512x512 or 1024x1024. I think the face textures for example are 128x128. So when Skyrim defaults to Ultra, that's what it assumes. A 2048x2048 texture uses four times the Vram of a 1024x1024, per rendered frame - and there are a number of these per second. It adds up pretty darn quick, so don't think 2k is Vram friendly 'cause it's not.

Posted

Alternate Start is still too far up the load for me.

You have 1GB of VRAM, there is no getting around this. Using ENBoost will help and reducing texture sizes will help but only so far. Installing mods which add lots of content to the game will not help, e.g. SIC, BKOS, player homes, followers, etc.

The brown face is not a problem with Lydia as such; the problem is with VRAM. Lydia just happened to be at the back of the queue and missed out. Next time you enter the area she is in a different place in the queue and gets a face.

I would say that you have 3 options.

1. Upgrade your hardware.

2. Remove a lot of those mods.

3. Spend a lot of time learning how to reduce the strain on your game and lots of time implementing those changes.

thanks for the quick reply, im removing alot of the followers i had installed and houses im not using, honestly im probably never going to use them....idk why i have so many installed. SIC im gona try to keep since i do play with Beast animations//SL mods alot. uninstalled BKOS. were should i drop Alternate start to? an upgrade to my GPU is planed but not anytime soon. another thing i have alot of that i should prob cut back on is armor mods :/

We've all been there. :classic_blush:

By all means keep SIC if it is one of your favourite mods (I use it myself). Get rid of what you can. I wouldn't bother trying to move Alt Start, just keep uninstalling the mods you can and run LOOT every time and see what happens.

Keep in my that you wont completely eradicate your problems. I have a 4GB card yet I still get texture issues, mostly because I have a lot of extra NPCs etc everywhere. Modding Skyrim is a learning curve which never really ends.

Posted

@Pauduan Actually there are several body types. I know of at least 4 with each having there own textures available and each having unique UV sets but not the point.

@swiftaloe Anywho I went ahead and browsed through the small housecarls mod, the body type they use is UNP based, specifically they use the Slim and Nano variant.

If you are looking to replace the small housecarl skin textures they are found at Textures>actors>character>Lydia.

I recommend you fallback on the textures that come with Caliente's Beautiful Bodies or Dimons for any UNP based stuff as the faces are 1024 and the body is at 2048, so it should be a minimal hit and overall an improvement over the 2k/4k used by default Fair skin because every female will be using that and that's a lot of heavy rendering for your system. If you are say in Whiterun all the females will render the 2k textures and you will find that you will easily run out of vram and therefor get brown faces when there is no memory left but if you go inside a building with 1 or 2 you are less likely to run into that unless those inside are also running HD textures or script heavy.

If you are say in Whiterun all the females will render the 2k textures and you will find that you will easily run out of vram and therefor get brown faces but if you go inside a building with 1 or 2 you are less likely to run into that unless they also are running HD textures.

oh i see, how would i go about switching back? just uninstall fairskin? the main reason i used fair skin its pale and i have a small breasted character.

EDIT: i should have waited for a response x.x, i uninstalled fair, and i also had adorable faces aswell so i uninstalled that to. had to re edit my characters makeup a bit but now my heads slightly a different shade then my body, its faint but noticeable.

EDIT2: took a pic

Using ENBoost correctly can help greatly. Make sure to use these install instructions.

Crash Fixes along with it is a very nice combination. Make sure to set UseOSAllocators=1 in its ini. It will require SKSE Plugin Preloader. Install both manually.

Crash Fixes

SKSE Plugin Preloader

Your idea to use the Optimized Vanilla Textures from Nexus is the ideal way to go.

They will help alot.

Using Ordenador these days is really uneccesary, and if you use it incorrectly it will make your game worse.

Use mods that your PC can handle.

When you play the game, try to have stuff like web browsers and torrents etc closed, to free up memory.
