Five Hundred Failures: Selune's Retrospective

Selune Highmoss.  Conceptualized almost ten years ago, she is a darkly inclined wizard whose life has dragged her through wondrous highs and crushing lows.  Raised by Bretons after being orphaned as an infant, she never grew up among her own kind.  She watched her adoptive parents grow old and die while she barely aged a day, a morbid reality that shaped her personality.  She is intense, introspective, and intelligent, with a sharp wit, a slow temper, and a dark and ironic sense of humor.

Over her years, she has had many motivations, but the lifelong driving force behind the worst things she's done is one thing - finding a cure for her stunted magicka.  Despite the potent combination of Altmer and Dunmer blood in her veins, her pool of magicka is shallow, forcing her to learn to utilize it with surgical precision.  From almost idyllic rituals of dance and song to carnal orgies devoted to fickle gods, Selune has done whatever she could think to do to try to discern the nature of her condition, or at least devise a workaround.  So far, it's all been for naught.

But her life hasn't been all gloom and magic.  During the Oblivion Crisis, she would meet two men - Rikan Karelia and Maechen Yv'Nalaryn.  Maechen would come and go from her life, always making some dumb mistake or poor choice that would cause them to argue or just tear them apart.  Rikan would come to her during one of these times apart, and would sweep her off her feet without either intending to.  When he died during the Oblivion Crisis, a part of her died, too, but the event taught her to hang on to what she loved, and despite how annoying he could be... she loved Maechen.  Before he left for Summerset Isle to try to resist the growing Dominion, she conceived a child with him, though she wouldn't know this until he was gone.  Her rational mind told her to abort the pregnancy, but her heart wouldn't let her.  Thus her daughter, Eldawen, was born, and with her a light came into Selune's life that had never been there before.

Under the spoiler, some truly ancient screenshots - and nudes!  Delve into the history of Selune Highmoss...

Originally, Selune belonged to a friend of mine whom at the time I was dating, and a name some of you might recognize - Gizmodian.  She used to take screenshots and paint over them to give them a bit of flair.  Sadly, I was unable to recover any but this one.  She may yet have some of the others stashed away somewhere, but for now, this is all that I can confirms remains of her old work.

I've always been a fan of the character.  Something about a darkly inclined woman with a sly smirk really works for me.  A couple of time, she would indulge me by taking a few shots like this.  Giz was never one to shy away from nudity, but she rarely took screenshots that were just intended to be sexy.  Which makes shots like this one...

...or this one, rarities indeed.

Selune's Skyrim debut.  Giz gifted me the preset, an honor I still take very seriously.  There were conditions - basically, don't post her doing anything Giz wouldn't want to be associated with - though these have since been lifted.  This shot comes from the bygone era of October 2012, shortly before the world ended in December of that year.

It didn't take me long to create a follower out of Maechen to tag along with her as well as share back with Giz.  November 2012, to be exact.  And while not the first picture of the two together, it is the first good one.  As an aside, Skyrim needs more book poses.

Sometimes when I'd have creative block regarding what to do with - or to - Selune, I'd make my frustrations known to Giz, who would usually say something short and obvious that I had missed for whatever reason, like  "put her on that table."  September, 2013, this one was taken.

Giz and I broke up in May of that year.  We're still friends, but I had a rough time, and sorta defaulted to Skyrim stuff as a way to stay connected, even though I didn't really have to since both of us still wanted to be friends anyway.  For so long, Selune had been her avatar, and Maechen mine, that I at times considered deleting Selune entirely just to escape any unwanted feeling or bizarre and unhealthy associations.  Obviously, I didn't, and have long since reframed Selune in my head as simply having been her character, and now being mine.  'course, I've been trying to do that since 2009 or so... I went through a weird phase, I was a teenager at the time.

One of my all-time favorite shots of Selune I've ever taken.  I've remade it twice, as you might notice in the spoiler.  The original hails from October 2013.

With Kallista, the retrospective was fairly easy, since at pretty much every major advance in (early) Skyrim modding, she got some sort of update.  Selune is a bit trickier, since she went through fewer iterations by virtue of being someone else's preset that I wished to keep as close to source as possible.  But there were things I did take liberties with, most notably her hair.  Here we see her current signature style, but from an older mod and with a really... white, texture.  November 2013.

This shot from April 2014 doesn't really mark anything, I just really like it.  We do get a glimpse at what was her signature outfit for a very long time, though, an archaic but fairly nice mage dress mod coupled with the fur shoulders from the classic Northgirl outfit.  Always nice when you find two unrelated mods that work together swimmingly.

But this!  This is the final shot form the ur-example of the Tutelage of Neloth series!  Exploration of a kink coupled with Giz's amusement at the very concept (as well as her own... appreciation, for Neloth) is what spawned the series.  I remember this one amused her greatly - something about seeing Selune so nervous tickled her.  November 2014.

You might also notice, somewhere between April and November, whatever mod Selune's current hair came from dropped, resulting in a much more natural texture, and one I personally still prefer.  We are very nearly at modern Selune by this point, and we're only just over two years into her existence in my Skyrim.

...I just like this one, too.  January 2015.

Eldawen makes an appearance!  I believe this was with Familiar Faces.  I think I installed new face textures too, since it seems like Selune's face looks more modern here.  By all rights, Eldawen has no business being both thiccer and darker than her mother since technically she's 3/4s Altmer, but I didn't write Racial Phylogeny, so whatever.  March 2015.  I was also posting regularly on LL by this point, I believe, so long-time followers may start recognizing shots form the few I post after this.

*smack*  February 14th, 2016.  Happy Valentine's Day...?

From here we find the familiar - relatively recent shots, such as Selune in Cyrodiil exploring an Ayleid ruin...

42268141684_4fffed5e41_o.jpg

...just hanging around outside somewhere in County Bruma with her alternate hairstyle and current signature clothes...

42268141144_594425bc78_o.jpg

...or from one of my most recent posts, Selune just chilling out on the beach.  I should note, somewhere around that first Bruma shot, Selune and Eldawen both got their bodies slightly blown up, Eldawen going from a .4 to a .5 on the weight slider, and Selune up there going up from a .2 to a .3.

Like before, all this leading to image #500 (of the numbered set, I passed 500 a looong time ago if we count all the porn...), but unlike Kallista's, I went ahead and gave that to you at the top of the page!

I hope you've all enjoyed this.  I've been anxious to his this milestone for a long time now.  Looking like Eldawen will be next.  Maechen isn't anywhere near 500, so I'm going to take a liberty and give him his at 250, which I believe he is also not far from.  No telling when I'll actually get that far, but I fully intend to.  And like I said in Kallista's...  I don't know when I'm going to stop, but right now, I don't intend to!

Holy crap, I hadn't heard of Gizmodian in quite some time. That's a really interesting story and pedigree to the character. Thanks for sharing, Jexsam~

Well if that isn't a singular character sheet, intertwining virtual and real life along with character's evolution. Nice read ! ?

Fuck this noise, I'm switching to Flickr.

Much better, the images are magnificent. I guess your "Testing 1 2 3..." entry gonna get some more red now, but nothing that can't be fixed by a dedicated blog author I'm sure. :classic_wink:

Btw, I'm not sure I already said that, but if it's understandable Eldawen has yellow eyes, why does Selune has ? Is she a metis too ?  ryHvj7vr_o.gif

She is indeed!  Her mother was a Dunmer and her father an Altmer.
