Saarthal?

Valdimar: It is an ancient Nord city from the era of Ysgramor and the 500 Companions.
The very first Nord city built in Skyrim.

What happened to the city?

Valdimar: The Night of Tears. The snow elves arrived and ransacked the town.

Why did they do this? Is there a reason?

Valdimar: It's a bit long to tell you. I'll tell you the story later when we're in a good place. Like a tavern for example.

The Great Ravage?

Valdimar: An appalling disaster that took place in 4E122.
A horrific storm followed by a monstrous tidal wave hit the city of Winterhold.
Ravaging a good part of the city.

I can't imagine the violence of this cataclysm and the terror that seized the inhabitants.

Atmora? What is Atmora? A country?

Valdimar: The home of the nords, my thane.
That's where most of the nords in Skyrim come from.

Why did they come here if they already had a country?

Valdimar: Conditions have become extreme there, my thane.
For a start, the country is swept by a bitter blizzard. Freezing winds. And secondly, the country is the scene of civil wars, worse than the one being played out here.
Once the country was a green and pleasant land, but because of the civil wars, the country has become what we know today.

I see. These civil wars, the intensive use of magic would have disturbed the climate of the country.

Iona: Welcome to Skyrim my thane...
You are experiencing the horrors of the Civil War...
Unfortunately, there are not all beautiful things to see in Skyrim.

Gregor: This is a monument that was built for the refugees of Morrowind.

You mean these dark elves? Why did they leave their country?

Gregor: This was during the Red Year. The Red Mountain, Mount Vvardenfell, a volcano located there, erupted. For the dunmers, it was impossible to stay there, most of them fled the country to come and take refuge here.
The eruption is partly the cause of the Great Ravage.

I see...
The two disasters would be linked.

Valdimar: Good. As you know, Nirn is held together by pillars, these pillars are mainly Towers.

Hm, yes I've heard that somewhere. But what exactly do you mean?

Valdimar: There is the White Gold Tower in Cyrodiil, the Red Mountain in Morrowind, and others that are no longer there like the Numidium.
But there were rumours that the Throat of the World would be one. Until then, we didn't know much about it.

Get to the point.

Valdimar: Have you seen where we are exactly, where the cave is where we are?

Under the Throat of the World.

Valdimar: There is also a legend that Shor used a passage under the mountain to get from Skyrim to Sovngarde.
And it is said that this place is called The Stone of Snow-Throat.
Each Tower has a stabilizing stone.

The Throat of the World would therefore be one of the pillars of Nirn.

Valdimar: I'm afraid the Thalmor will fall on it though...

Don't worry about it. I doubt the Thalmor knows the location of the cave.
And they're busy trying to make Talos disappear.
