blog-0899254001421964888.pngI thought I would try to post some notes about the story behind some of my mods, starting with Sanguine, Alicia and the Sisterhood of Dibella and try to show the links between them.

I will keep the stories in spoilers tags because they are, after all, full of spoilers about the mods.

You have been warned :)

Sanguine Debauchery / Alicia

"once was a woman, as fair as an evening, of springtime in old Stros M'Kai"

A long time ago, in a brothel of old Stros M'Kai, Sanguine was deep in the throws of a night of debauchery as a mortal... one of his little guilty pleasures. He was surprised when he found himself awestruck by one of the whores... a fair red-haired woman name Alicia.

After many nights of depraved courtship, he eventually revealed himself to her and brought her back to one of his realms as his concubine. Unfortunately, that proved too much for her mortal mind and body and she perished in agonizing circumstances.

Since then, Sanguine has been hard at work trying to find his Alicia again and feel that way once more.

He inspired statues of himself with a red haired whore under his thumb. He whispered the words of a popular song about the 'fair woman from Stros M'Kai'.. but more importantly, once in a generation, he selected mortal women with potential and tried to shape them into his ideal memory of Alicia.

Most didn't accept or survive the process. Some say Alessia herself was once favored by Sanguine while she grew up as a slave under Ayleid rule and turned to Akatosh as a way to rebel against Sanguine's upbringing. She kept her name as a reminder of what she had done and motivation to atone for it.

The few Alicias that survived live forever by his side, exploring the excess of their perversion next to Sanguine's other pets (like famous edonist Crassius Curio).

But Sanguine is still not satisfied. None of his Alicias come even close to making him feel the way he did that first time.

So he keeps looking... and someone with the destiny of a Dragonborn was bound to shine like a beacon and catch his attention.

To that effect, he decided to dispatch his latest Alicia to Windhelm from the abandonned prison where she was finishing part of her education.

Sanguine thought he would get closer to his wish by bedding a mortal. Rendered mad by the experience, Alicia's mother ran away to experience her own perversions (see the mod Sex Slaves for more details about that story.. I am not going to spoil other mods :) ), leaving her behind with her sister, Agnes.

Alicia's father was a failed hunter, a gambler and a drunk. After selling a deeply disturbed and violent Alicia to a stranger (Sanguine) at a young age, and causing Agnes to rebel and run away to join the Sisterhood of Dibella, her father died alone when a tree collapsed on the shack he built across the prison where Alicia was being trained.

By giving his latest attempt at an Alicia to the care of the Dragonborn, Sanguine hopes for a more gradual exposure to the influence of the Daedra and possibly, turn the Dragonborn into his latest creation.

Sanguine Debauchery / The Sisterhood of Dibella

As a Daedra, Sanguine is fickle and has other things on his mind than finding his Alicia.

Another of his guilty pleasures is to watch mortals struggle with their own desires and for that little sport, servants of Dibella are prime targets.

Dibella courtesans have to walk a fine line between devotion to beauty and sensuality (Dibella's domain) without finding long term attachment into marital love (Mara's domain) or letting themselves be consumed by lust (Sanguine's domain).

His latest plan is an elaborate deception of one of Dibella's most faitful servants - Sister Hamal.

Sister Hamal is the most senior Travelling sister in Skyrim. As such, she has been exposed to all sorts of experiences on the road and she is next in line to run the Temple.

Sanguine learned about her through her friendship with Haelga, in Riften. As a remote outpost away from Markarth, Riften was a good place to stop for a travelling sister.

Haelga, under cover of practicing a more primal version of the Dibellan Arts, is in effect running one of the finest brothels in Skyrim featuring mainly herself.

Sanguine arranged for the death of her niece, Svana, and her parents to gain a first row seat to the Bunkhouse passing himself as Svana.

There, he could whisper words of discord to the clients and impersonating Haelga at times, during intense sessions with clients, wearing only a pair of Daedric boots.

As a bonus, he could also feign rightousness at the clients abuse to get closer to servants of Mara and corrupt them as well.

The friendship between Haelga and Hamal was easy to take advantage of. Passing himself as Haelga, Sanguine seduced Hamal and revealed the existance of an older form of Dibellan Art - the Ancient Dibellan Rites... advocating an even more primal form of beauty than Haelga had been practicing up to that point.

He convinced her that the salvation of the Temple of Dibella was at stakes and that the current Sybil was an usurper. Hamal responded beyond his expectations - she disposed of the Sybil and Mother Caecilia with daedric fire while they were taking a massage at night. She sent two of the most vigilant sisters to their death looking for the new Sybil. She arranged the new Sybil to be abducted by Forsworn agents and exposed to Sanguine's influence in a ritual of corruption of Dibella (why did you think think the statue of Dibella was covered in blood next to Fjotra's cell?).

After that, corrupting the rest of the Sisters was as easy as whispering the approval of their goddess for indulging themselves. They were all too eager to comply.

This seems relevant, so I went ahead and copied it here:

History compresses when seen from a distance. In practice, that means that names, dates, and events get muddled. This is why history books can devote pages upon pages to the reigns of the last two ruling monarchs of Britain, but Sanakhte and Djoser of the Fourth Dynasty of Egypt might not be mentioned at all, or if they are, given perhaps a single sentence or two. For example, you may or may not have known that Sanakhte and Djoser were from the third dynasty, not the fourth, but you went right past that sentence without blinking.

To segue, nobody knows whether Djoser should be spelled "Djoser" or "Zoser" and pronounced accordingly.

Similarly, in Elder Scrolls lore, "Alicia" is either the correct spelling and pronunciation or a corruption of title/name "Alessia." Alessia (or Alessa, or Alicia, or Elisa, or Al-Esh, or Aleshut, depending on where you're from), also known as the Slave Queen, along with Pelinal Whitestrake (i.e. an incarnation of the "Immortal Hero"), led the rebellion against the Aylieds in the First Era. The first empress of the Cyrodiils (Imperials) and Tamriel, she paved the way for the ascension of nemer (i.e. Human-kind), formed the religion of the Eight Divines from Nordic and Aldmer belief systems, and was the inspiration and spiritual progenitor of the Alessian Order. Upon her death, Akatosh sainted her personally and bound her soul to the Red Diamond, the jewel then used in the Amulet of Kings, forging a covenant between Man and Divine, sealing Tamriel away from direct Daedric rule.

Well said  :)

It is also worth noting that, according to the lore, before rising up and being made a saint, Alessia was a slave and was worshipping, you guessed it, Sanguine  :)

I should also point out that her holy city Sancre Tor, which according to one theory is her burial place (the competing and more widely accepted theory is that she was buried under White-Gold Tower), is directly translated as "Golden Hill."

However, the word "Sancre" may also be a corruption of a proto-cyrodiilic language word "Sangre" which means "Blood." Much like the word "Sanguine" can mean "bloody," Sancre Tor can be, with a bit of a wink, translated as "Blood Thorn" or "Bloody Hill" and thus into "Sanguine's Thorn" (the word "Hill" or "Mountain" being interchangeable with "thorn" in some of the more poetic descriptions).  A further stretch between the word "thorn" and Sanguine's Rose can also be made.

A tenuous link, at best, but interesting - Alessia (Alicia) may have founded the city of Sanguine's Thorn at some point, and may still be buried there, "under his thumb" so to speak.
