very true,  My uncle married a Russian woman, I now have two cousins one of whom speaks with an accent and the other does not. The difference between them is 11 years.

The 16 year nurtured her accent and found friends who spoke her language.  The youngest was too young to establish a friendship with the "old guard" and so established friends in the English speaking community and hung around my Father side of the family. She speaks no Russian, and as a result has no Russian accent.

So the loss of an accent can occur in a single generation.

  My father and mother were from southern Ontario, but moved to Quebec the same year I was born. I went to French schools and hung around people who spoke mostly French.

Result, I have a French accent, and my parents did not.
