Heavy stutter

Hi guys.

I got an i5-7400 3 GHz CPU, 8 GB DDR 4 RAM and a Geforce GTX 1050 Ti 4 GB GPU. My problem is that Fallout 4 keeps getting insane stutter that practically completely freezes the entire game for anywhere between 5-20 seconds while my HDD is doing something, which is even worse in a few locations like Red Rocket station or around Diamond City. It's to the point where I can't even leave or approach locations without this happening even with ENB settings which should help. Do you guys know what or if I can do anything to stop that stutter? What ini settings and texture mods should I get like this?

HDD is your problem, you need SSD.

Do you have many saves files in:

C:\Users\YOURNAME\Documents\my games\Fallout4\Saves  (the location might be different for you)

from time to time i usually delete some of the saves and i keep only waht i want, and i noticed an improvement in loading and lagging.

(but make a backup of your saves first)

i might be wrong...

No, though Fallout 4 does keep making lots of automatic savegames for some reason and I never know when or why.

then is something else, your pc specs should work without problems with any new games for the next 10 years at least

also check out what is running in task manager. (what is consuming the most)

it happened to me, when multiple FO4 was running in the background.

Even from a (new) HDD? Cobblepot suggested that FO4 is only playable on SSD, so if it really is only that then there's a problem.

NO way, has nothing to do with a SSD or HDD, ( true i personally have hybrid SSHD.)

but FO4 does not require a specific hdd or ssd or sshd.

if this stutter happens suddenly for no reason... you changed something in your system, or maybe you just recently upgraded your PC

and maybe something is not compatible, or maybe you just need to upgrade your drivers, or the windows itself.

add more details: on when, how, is old this problem, etc

It mostly happens in exterior areas. I actually get a fairly decent framerate when this freeze isn't breaking my game, can get at least 30 even with Subtle ENB on and up to 60 when it's not a wide open area or chock full of effects. I use relatively few texture packs, mainly Phyop and those listed in the second sticky here.

The rest comes from this guide with quest, armor and other mods, all 2k resolution, not bigger. I noticed that the very first freeze with crazy loading happens when I start a fresh new game from the main menu before even loading a single texture. Then, I next noticed it around Red Rocket home near the power armor station. Shorter freezups randomly seemed to occur anywhere (about 3-5 seconds at most), while the most atrocious I saw before uninstalling was when I approached Diamond city from north and when I was using the elevator to travel up to Goodneighbor. I was in a damn metal box so there wasn't anything in sight to cauze it, but suddenly a very long (didn't measure it but must have been at least 20 seconds) freeze which ended up being too much for me.

Again, if it wasn't for the freezeups I'd actually have a pretty decent session since I can maintain reasonable FPS with ENB on and just barely noticable microstutter when I'm moving through areas where you can expect it.

I have no clue whethere this is from incorrect ini or enblocal settings if it isn't my rig.

That's what happened to me,can't talk for everyone, game was also freezing for 1-10 seconds in various places all the time, fps was droping to 0 and at the same time my HDD was making sounds like crazy,

tried lots of things for fix and nothing really helped, checked in-game CPU and GPU % and none showed 100% overload, not even 60%,

so it was all clear, ordered SSD,all freezes gone right away, now almost all the time 60fps with gtx980,even installed enb,

+game loading screens loads up much faster by the way.

also maybe you updated something recently,my last OS update ended up me with FO4 dropping fps from 60 to ~40,had to reinstall graphics driver for 60 fps to come back, but that's just fps drop, not freezes...

very strange that you are getting freeze NOT in open place also..

obviously the best to load the windows now this days is a SSD and Here is a comparison.

but still, you have to add more details: when all stutter happends , did you recently upgraded your PC  , it always was a stutter, only in FO4?  etc.

I only downloaded updates to my windows 7, nothing else. And yes, only FO4 stutters like this for me. I didn't try playing it completely vanilla, though I did notice when I tried starting a new game without mods that this freezing doesn't seem to be present.

No stutters, highest settings possible, only a slow location load if i make sim settlements larger than 30 ppl

...helped me a lot.

My specifications:

- Intel i7-7700k

My specs are not as good as yours I have an I7 Geforce GTX-970 with a 250gig SSD and a 2Tera;HDD , when I first put FO 4 on it used to stutter like crazy ,even playing Skyrim ,I think something must have been working in the back ground after a month or so it settled down and I have no stutter , I did find after a search on youtube a video on how to configure windows 10 for gaming and turned off quite a few useless things that work in the back ground on a side note my 250 g SSD soon filled up and I moved all my games to my HDD and fingers crossed its still good . Hopefully you can soon resolve this problem

Seems like my rig is quite a bit behind everyone else's sadly so I'm not sure how much I can improve on the stuttering like this. I do want to ask if playing on Win 7 or 10 has any effect on performance though.

Another question I have is with ENB, what value should I give into the enblocal about videomemory and if I should force vsync in there or not.

Honestly? Do not use crap called enb at all. It is only my opinion, no one should share it.

When I was playing on FO4 and Skyrim on Windows 7, I had no stuttering problems it only started when I upgraded to a Windows 10 Gaming Computer that was a lot more powerful than my win 7 Comp , it seems strange that a more powerful computer would stutter but it did.

Are you using the Lots More Settlers and Enemies mod?  That mod made my game stutter horribly.

No, though I did install a bunch of other mods like Fusion City and other quest mods along with weapons, armor and also gameplay. Didn't pick anything above 2k though.

Eh, what do you mean? I understand that FO4 already comes with its own effects, but ENB still seems pretty widespread to me. Or are you saying that could be the cause behind the stutters?

It would seem there's another possible culprit behind this.

I had Real HD Face Textures 2k in my modlist and after turning it on with barely any other mods installed it instantly caused a massive stutter upon hitting New Game. Appearantly other people experienced this problem with far more advanced rigs when using it, and though I didn't venture into the Commonwealth yet as I'm in the middle of reinstalling, if it really was behind it then I'm suggesting everyone stay away from those textures. Here's the bug report under Causes stutter entry. https://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/20445?tab=bugs

On another note though, what other body meshes and face textures should I use for males if that one is no good?
