Help: CTD When Changing Gender

So I've been having the issue of crashing to desktop when trying to switch gender When making a new game, which I've had for a while now. I have originally taken in consideration of the fact that I use a Mod to start off in the exit of the cave after Helgen with whomever you escaped with, but this has not caused me my problem in the past.

 

As of late, I've felt the need to uninstall the mods I had also suspected and are as followed.

 

- Any Hair Mod I have for females; Apachii Skyhair 1.3 - 1.4, Cazy Hairs, Ren Hairs from LoversLab, Oblivion Hairs, Numenume.

I had always thought that the over abundance of hairs loading when changing gender was the original cause of the crash, however deactivating them didn't help.

 

- Body Mod; CBBE V3_1. I uninstalled it after I uninstalled the hairs, and still crashed.

 

- Race Mods; Drow Mod Beta. I've always been told this was a trouble race,but even uninstalling it gave no effect.

 

I'm at a dead end. Anything that has enhanced females are turned off.

I know that some anim/poser mods would interfere with starting from the beginning cart ride through character creation. It's possible that they interfere with the actual character creation (I assume you creating the new PC when you start in the cave) in the alternate start mod. I would uninstall any mod that does any type of animation/posing, and try again. If that fails, uninstall everything not related to character creation (leave the body/face/hair mods in for character creation) and try again. Finally, if that doesn't work, uninstall ALL mods (except the alt start mod) and see what you get. Finally, you may need to have Steam verify the cache if you still have issues after that. Again, I know anim/poser mods interfered witg the normal start, so that's where I'd start.

Animations and poses. Got it. Was about to edit my post to include them when I saw your post.

 

I have disabled the following Animation and Pose mods:

 

- Pinup Poser. I turned this one off because Upon testing one of my old characters and making sure the body and hair mods worked again, I accidently clicked on one of the pose rings, and my game insta-crashed.

 

- ASX. *Ahem* Adult Sex Mod from Nexus. >> I don't know exactly what the issue would be with that, but I DO know that it adds spells at the beginning of Character creation.

 

- FNIS. This has caused me some headaches in the past, but I don't think it has crashed my game. Like ASX, it adds spells in the beginning of creation. Not only that, but I remember making characters that started to have the spells automatically set to the attack buttons even after creation.

 

I've got a theory: Based on everything I have uninstalled, they all had something similer; adding stuff during CC. Now I'm not sure why this would happen, but it's just a theory. I've had no issue doing this before with one character. :/

 

I've defragmented and virified cache files while I was typing this, so hopefully that will help.

Alright. So that didn't work.

 

The theory still stands, though. I know that The altered beginning gives you weapons in your inventory during CC (ie: an iron axe is put on the waist right as you can use the sliders). I'm going to asume that might have something to do with it.

 

HOWEVER.... What if I just make the default male character, than use 'Showracemenu' and make a character that way? I believe I MIGHT have done that once or twice.

Have you tried the "Disable all but body/face/race mods" option I mentioned? There may some mod or another that has undisclosed animations/idles. How about disable everything (except the alt start mod you are using)? Frankly if neither of those work for you, you are beyond my capacity for help, and maybe someone else on here can give better guidance.

 

Normally when I am restarting the game, I just go ahead run through the Helgen BS so I can collect the crap littered around so I can sell it when I get to Riverwood. One thing I did is I saved the "1-Prisoner" save that Skyrim auto-creates at the beginning of the game. It is a save point after the cart ride but right before normal character creation. It is a clean save I did starting the game with no mods active at all, then quit after reaching that point, and I copied that save to another folder before creating the character. That way I'd always have a clean save to start with that bypassed that stupid cart ride. Before starting a new character, I uninstall all mods, toss the ini files, verify cache, then let Steam recreate inis, and adjust as necessary. Then I install the race/body/hair mods only, copy the "prisoner" save back to the save folder, and start the game. It goes right to the character creation quickly and I can create the character normally. After that I let it play out until after I make the choice as to who I follow into the Keep. Once inside the keep, I quit, install the other mods I want to use (using BOSS to order them of course), then start that game at that save, and continue through the startup. I have yet to have a problem starting a game this way. It's annoying, and it does require you to still go through the keep, but again, never an issue. Now to be frank, I have nowhere near the shear number of mods you do, but again - no problems.

There's a workaround I've found to work for my own case of crashing when changing gender. Make a default male character, then use the console to change your character's gender and go into the race menu and change your race to something else to fix your now horribly mutated face. If you want to preserve your stats, then try using Showracemenu Alternative, which adds a spell that opens the race menu and allows you to change race without scrambling everything.

 

Also as for a source of the problem to begin with, I noticed the UNPB body mod's description says it causes CTDs when changing gender in showracemenu - which leads me to believe it has something to do with BBP.

I use CBBE. :/ Though I believe I found some sort of solution. I make a normal male character and go to the sleeping giant in in one of the rooms. I seem to get the best FPS in there for some reason. Anyways, I'm able to play right now, but I hope it stays that way.

You know what, I never thought of Extended Colors being the issue.

It would honestly make sense, though. I never had it turned it off. It is related to the Skin Tone and Hair Color of both genders, though mostly female. I never mentioned this earlier because I didn't think anything of it, but there's a slow down at the beginning of a new game when the camera is swinging towards the character creater. I'm guessing that the 'slow down' is the colors loading for the male character.

 

I will test this. I will also consider the mod you reccomended.

Well I disabled Extended Color.esm, and it still crashed, but it lasted longer than usual. o_o This may be because I reenabled my Hair and body mods. >> Though I have no current problem with loading Showracemenu for my current characters. I'll take your word for it because, I don't feel like disabling everything again. x_x

though if you can use showracemenu on your other characters, I guess that wouldn't be the problem

 

I only really use that mod so I can use the extended colors on my characters,

It's basically that face sculptor person in dawnguard I hear.
