Animal Companion

Hey, I tried to buy an Armored Troll in Dawnguard, but Gunner told me that I "already had an animal" with me. Thing is, I don't. I had a stray dog, but he got killed ages and ages ago. Is there a way to either go the location of your supposed pet or a way through the console to "part ways" with your pet?

I remember when I first started playing Skyrim there were a slew of issues with the "stray dog". Like he would wander off and never show up again, so the PC would be listed having an animal companion. You try one of the mods that allow multiple companions (UFO - from Nexus) to bypass the issue (not sure that is DG updated yet, and not sure if usable with animal companions).
