fatbloke69 Posted October 4, 2017 Posted October 4, 2017 So the other day my PSU went POP, So ordered a new one (and case) which arrived today and I spent all afternoon striping it down and rebuilding Then came the big turn on aaannnnnnddd, nothing Checked all connections, and I have power to the MB (Big LED is lit) The power switch is good, But still nothing So i think the PSU took down something on the board when it went to silicon heaven So i was wondering is this likely to have killed my CPU or other components or should I be good with just a new MB Build:- AMD FX8350 Asus Sabertooth 990FX R2.0 XFX Radeon R9 380 DD Edition Graphics Card (4 GB, GDDR5) HyperX Beast 32 GB (4 x 8 GB) DDR3 1600 MHz CL9 Any assistance would be much appreciated
zzz72w3r Posted October 4, 2017 Posted October 4, 2017 If PSU is good then it is almost always MB. Just double check the connections. Once I had the LED light on but PC won't start because I didn't connect the PSU to CPU socket properly.
Content Consumer Posted October 4, 2017 Posted October 4, 2017 I've never had a dying PSU kill any other components, but I've heard that it's possible. One thing you might try is trying to turn the power on and off again. A couple of times. IIRC ASUS motherboards (and possibly others) are finicky about newly installed PSUs, and sometimes have to get used to the idea that they've got a new food source. I just recently had to reinstall my own PSU, and the computer kept turning itself off, like three times, before it finally took. I hope nothing's been damaged for you...
ShivasBane Posted October 4, 2017 Posted October 4, 2017 Sorry to say this but in my experience as a lead tech at a computer shop an exploding PSU has a chance of frying anything plugged into it including mobo, cpu, hdd, and even the video card. It doesn't happen often but it does happen. It can send a high voltage dc pulse or even let line level current (AC) through as it disintegrates. Try it with only the mobo plugged in and see if the fans run up to speed. If they do then plug in the other components one by one until the fans don't spin up. With any luck it will be a cheaper part than the mobo. Hope this helps and good luck
fatbloke69 Posted October 4, 2017 Author Posted October 4, 2017 Thanks for all the help Guys. Looking into it in a non sleep deprived and less flu'ed up state I find the main Mobo cable had come loose Alice lives again (In my defense it came loose from the new PSU and was hidden behind all the other Power Cables, "Good cable management" my hairy fat arse)
ToJKa Posted October 5, 2017 Posted October 5, 2017 Right, the jungle of cables in my old PC was quite the sight too. It's awonder there was any airflow However, it is indeed possible for low quality PSU to kill other components when it goes. That's why you never buy the cheap ones. I've always referred to this list, the high tier ones protections that specifically prevent that, and component damage from other voltage irregularities: http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/forum/id-2547993/psu-tier-list.html
