GimmeBACON Posted August 26, 2017 Posted August 26, 2017 So I was playing through Dead Money on my old 360, and I thought about something... Why has nobody created a mute follower? Plenty of quest mods use Fuz Ro D-oh and don't get voice acting done, but why not embrace the lack of voice acting and make a character who can't talk? The character could use notes and body language written on screen to convey their thoughts and feelings. I doubt anybody is going to actually do this, but I though I'd at least discuss it.

That's a fun idea. I like the notes concept especially, or the follower could have a notebook they write in, although that might be harder to pull off. It would lead to a lot less inventory clutter than notes, unless of course the notes were purely conceptual and done entirely through dialogue - Mute hands you a note which reads: 'Seriously, Dragonborn, I thought we had important work to do, why are we always stopping to help people out with skeever infestations or deliver goods half-way across Skyrim?'
GimmeBACON Posted August 26, 2017 Author Posted August 26, 2017 I would assume just making a handful of notes that are given to you during key moments in quests or when in a set location would be easier to handle then an ever-growing notebook log. Stuff like when you enter Riften, (s)he slips you a note saying to keep an eye on your coin purse, Or when starting The Forsworn Conspiracy, something like, "We should leave well enough alone, this seems like some seriously deep shit." Then there'd be general speech, that would just be subtitles on screen, stuff like When you bump into him/her, -"follower" raises a brow, (s)he seems to wonder what you want- When battle starts, -"follower" adjusts his/her stance and raises his/her weapon- or -"followers" eyes furrow and his/her fist clenches his/her weapon firmly- When looking for an opponent, -"followers" eyes narrow as he scans the area- General "conversation", -"follower" seems tired, maybe we should stop at an inn? or -"follower" trips over a jutting rock, but tries to play it off like (s)he didn't... his/her face is quite red- Then there's other things, like if you want romance, etc, but that'd be the decision of the creator... but yeah, everybody makes generic waifu followers, maybe this'd be a way to make your character turned follower unique and stand out among them.
GimmeBACON Posted August 26, 2017 Author Posted August 26, 2017 Mute follower? Heh, Serana and "Yes, what do you need?" lol... http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/29922/?
Tomiaaa Posted March 6, 2018 Posted March 6, 2018 I know this post is half a year old, but I also happened to think of this same idea for many times now and I told myself this has to be a thing. I searched this site and the nexus but I haven't found any (yet), so I think I'll give this a try and make it happen On 8/26/2017 at 12:56 PM, GimmeBACON said: So I was playing through Dead Money on my old 360, and I thought about something... Thank you This came to me just now... won't the term "mute" be offensive for some people? I could use "nonverbal" but it sounds lame. I've researched varieties of mutism, and the one that best applies to the idea (at least for me) is Aphonia, which is the inability to produce voiced sound. When you think of it... it's also kinda the antithesis to the gift of the Dragonborn How does "<CharacterName>, the Aphonic Follower" sound?

I'm not particularly politically correct so I wouldn't care either way what the followers referred to as... that being said, plenty of people in the world are dumb and might just scroll past it if they don't recognize words or if the titles not catchy enough to get their attention. Regardless, I'm sure you'll have time to figure it out whilst making the follower.
LinksSword Posted March 21, 2018 Posted March 21, 2018 What? would they use sign language or something to get their points across?

Largely how it worked in Dead Money, and assuming your character is perceptive and picks up on the followers body language. Not to sound like a dick, but you did read more then one post in, right? Because I came up with a few ideas for communication with this mute follower.
