user619 Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 Recently I about a nvidia geforce gtx 1080 Ti I switched from a 980 Ti to a 1080Ti but I saw no performance increase. I run the game at 4K resolution. Its the same with fallout 4 of course I do use mods for my game but when I had the 980Ti I did not install any new mods then when I installed my 1080 Ti there was no performance increase. I can play other games like the whicher 3 at 4K 60fps with ultra settings but fallout 4 and skyrim does not seem to get any better. I did completely uninstall my previous graphic drivers and install the ones for the 1080Ti But no change for fallout 4 or Skyrim. Can anyone help me?
JobiWanUK Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 Skyrim is about 6 years old and not optimised for multi-core CPUs and/or top notch graphics cards. There's only so much a new card will do for old games.
dharvinia Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 Another factor you have to take into account is that a computer system is limited by its slowest component. a slow hard drive or slower memory will "bottleneck" the data transfer. If you have a high end graphics card in order to get all the benefits you need to have a "high end" everything else. Do a performance check on your computer it will show you what if anything is causing problems.
orgs1n Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 To not fully crush the OP's hopes on this Friday evening, I'd like to report that I recently upgraded my aging PC's graphics card from a dual GTX 660 to a single GTX 1060, and it doubled my FPS. Your upgrade, from a 980 Ti to a 1080 Ti, isn't as huge as mine was of course. Still, if you read though some of the graphics drivers guides for Skyrim out there, you might get more FPS out of your new card.

user619 Posted June 30, 2017 Author Posted June 30, 2017 Do you have vsync on? Yes if I turn it off screen tearing occurs.
zzz72w3r Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 Do you have vsync on? Yes if I turn it off screen tearing occurs. That probably explains it. With vsync on you are capped at multiples of your display's refresh rate. For example, say your display is 120Hz and without vsync you get 85 fps, vsync will cap it at 60 (1/2 of 120). EDIT: So 1080Ti is such an overkill for Skyrim and FO4 without mods that you are getting the same fps with vsync as 980Ti.
RomeoZero Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 what do you want with V-sync on ? Fps locked to your refresh rate. Also ENB have fps limiters. So, v-sync off = 60+fps v-sync on = 60fps. if you have 120Hz+ monitor it can be 1080p\120fps.

I am ok with 60 fps cap besides I us a 4k 55 inch TV On skyrim when I had 980 ti I ran the game at 4k and with a very moded skyrim and I got usually 45 to 55 fps but now with the 1080 Ti I get exactly the same same fps same goes for fallout 4 but for other games I got a huge increase in fps like the whicher 3 at 4k.
zzz72w3r Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 If you can't get 60fps then it's probably ENB. ENB needs more than just GPU to push high fps. ENB and mods basically destroy whatever the optimization in vanilla, and Bethesda games are never optimized well to start wtih.
allsunday Posted June 30, 2017 Posted June 30, 2017 I went from two GTX 970s SLI to one 980 Ti and got a lot of performance due to the extra VRAM, Cuda Cores, and overall speed of the 980 Ti. I got a 15-20 fps boost in my Skyrim! Most people cried and complained that it was a pointless upgrade. Most people have no idea what they're talking about. Skyrim and Fallout 4 are very different games compared to other games out there. They don't follow the conventional rules. Everybody knows this but most people still act like they never heard of it before. If you have everything installed correctly on Skyrim (enboost, memory patch, etc) having the 11gb of VRAM on the more efficient Pascal architecture SHOULD garner a noticeable performance increase especially if you're using an ENB. Anyway, does your skyrimprefs.ini show any indication that it knows you're using a new graphics card? sd3device="NVIDIA GeForce GTX ???" Also check the last part of this discussion: http://www.loverslab.com/topic/80192-help-with-performance-on-a-heavily-modded-setup/?do=findComment&comment=1941333

I also us the fantasy effect of realvision I really like the fantasy effect. Ambient occlusion and depth of field take the most hit to fps turning those off gets to 55-60 fps.

SlapMeSilly Posted July 1, 2017 Posted July 1, 2017 You didn't mention what OS, CPU, how much ram, and whether the game is on a standard hard drive or an SSD. Something else I didn't happen to see anyone else mention is DirectX graphics card memory limits. Assuming you're running Skyrim 32bit not SE, and I'm making an assumption you're on Windows 10 (?), because of a DirectX implementation bug DX9 on Windows 10 is limited to 4gb of graphics card memory address. If you're using a lot of texture mods that can eat it up and produce the bottleneck you're experiencing. Another could be shadows. Even though the hardware can support the rendering of awesome shadows, Bethesda's engine is a potato. Put it on minimum quality. Since you're using an ENB it's gonna modify it anyway. With FO4 or SSE play with godrays too.

OS: Windows 10 CPU: Intel Core i7-3820 3.6 GHz ram: 16GB DIMM DDR3 clocked @ 1333 MHz Game is on a standard hard drive but doesn't that only effect games' load times? I am running skyrim 32bit because some mods are not available on the SE version. Is there a way to break the limitations of DX9 on windows 10?

There's no way to get past that bug as long as you stay on Windows 10. Microsoft really goofed up on this one. I'm sure someone either lost their job or they got transferred to a different (re: lower) department. Going back to Windows 7 is technically the only way around it.

That makes sense for skyrim but what about fallout 4 it uses DX11 and I saw no improvement from the 980ti to the 1080ti
allsunday Posted July 2, 2017 Posted July 2, 2017 That makes sense for skyrim but what about fallout 4 it uses DX11 and I saw no improvement from the 980ti to the 1080ti I'm not sure about Fallout 4. Run this mod: http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/1762/? and see if there's a bottleneck. What percentage of use is your GPU at? Note the usage percentage for your CPU also. Also, turn off all Vsync. 3 places to do this in both Fallout 4 and Skyrim: 1. Change iPresentInterval=0 in Fallout4Prefs.ini (SkyrimPrefs.ini for Skyrim) 2. In enblocal.ini inside the game installation directory, change ForceVsync=false and VsyncSkipNumFrames=0 for Fallout 4. (For Skyrim, it's EnableVSync=false) 3. Go to your Nvidia Control Panel, click Manage 3D Settings, Select the Program Settings tab, Select or Add the programs Fallout 4 or Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim and change Vertical Sync to Off.

GPU at 99% Turning off Vsync causes screen tearing I don't like screen tearing it hurts my eyes Turning off Vsync for skyrim did not increase fps at all My fallout 4 looks like skyrim with the mods on but even so when I had the 980ti and when I changed it to the 1080ti I didn't see any fps increase

Go back to the basics: either reinstall the new driver 384.76 -- or -- rollback to the previous driver 382.53 and see what happens. Also make sure that you have Power Management Mode in Nvidia Control Panel for Skyrim and Fallout 4 turned to Prefer Maximum Performance. Also make sure in Control Panel -> Hardware and Sound --> Power Options is turned on to High Performance.
