Farbgast Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 Hello, My HDD is near dying, and even transferring backup files takes a really long time so it may not make it (fortunately I did a backup two days ago but still a lot of Skyrim time might be wasted). However, I did have the Steam cloud enabled. So when I change the HDD, would steam be able to download those cloud files back to the HDD, so no progress would be lost? Off topic noob question: Why are certain non steam programmes running slowly even when their programme content and files are located in SSD rather than HDD?
Guest guyfrommilkyway Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 when i reinstalled windows once and wiped everything from the hard from steam cloud i got back the game itself and the steam ''subscribed '' mods so should be easy from there second answer just keep everything on the ssd
sila Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 If have you have Steam's cloud saving on you should get your saves back, but any mods you had will be gone unless you managed to save them all in your backup. Just try to add all the mods you had enabled on that save and you should be fine
parasite Posted June 14, 2017 Posted June 14, 2017 Yah steam only saves original game files. Addons such as mods from sexlab and nexus that are not done through the steam workshop will be lost. My HDD dyed with my skyrim on it. Honestly a god send. Rebuild a more stable version now that you know what you want. It may hurt but in the long run it is worth it. You will spend more time trying to get your backup working then just reinstalling.
Farbgast Posted June 15, 2017 Author Posted June 15, 2017 Thanks for the replies. That is indeed great news! But why would my mods be wiped out? They are all from the SSD, not HDD. After all, the mods go to the Data section of the Skyrim folder.

Steam only knows about and backs up Steam stuff. Mods, bat files, obviously anything in MO or NMM will not be included in Steam. To your off topic... Windows is on the SSD, yes? And you have no temp folder or anything else on the HDD? Are you sure? Could be some programs are slow based on other bottlenecks or depend on something on the HDD.

I know that Steam is not responsible for mods, but I want to confirm if my mods would be safe with the HDD gone. This is because NMM installs mods into the data folder of the Skyrim folder which is in the C: Drive, not the D: Drive. So even if my HDD died, all mods should still be safe, right?

Is Steam on the failing mechanical D drive and Skyrim on the solid state C drive? If that is the case then your mods should be fine, and won't need to be backed up at all. If Steam, Skyrim and Windows are all on the solid state drive then I don't know what the problem is.

All three programmes are on SSD. Probably for Word, there is some programme file there which causes the lag. But regardless, knowing that the mods are safe (and that I have transferred the game saves into the c file), I can safely play skyrim when I get a new hard drive and transferred the files from hdd. Thank you very much for the confirmation.
