game options - graphics settins

hello : ) i recently found myslef tweaking with graphics options through the in game options panel, yet there are a few that i cant find clear descriptions of what they affect by searching the web. So if anyone can help with it will b great. The options i m having trouble to understand in regards to how to adjust them are :

1 : vertical sync

2 : lighting

3 : 3d scene resolution

4 : uncompressed sim textures

5 : post processing effects and how it works with lighting

Also ,a question about laptop mode ,since i play on a laptop,,it seems that opinions vary a bit on that matter since i ve read that by enabling it i migt actually lose a lot over quality of visuals ,without actually helping the machine.

wow..i guess that like 1/2 the options menu,,but i m not native english and when it comes to tech terms i get quite confused, :s

ps : i attach a pic of my current setting ,i usually play on plain fullscreen, but had to revert to windowed fullscreen to manage get a screen pic of them :))

Hey!

I'm playing on a laptop too, an i3 Lenovo,

I'm finding that if I play with laptop mode off and everything else low as possible,

Sim details highest.

Distance highest,

Vsync on

Its not the greatest but runs smoothly and I get some ok screenshots :)

Hey Rlo and thanks for taking thetime to answer to the topic, also for providing the hints you did,,Vsync can go off the list now ! :)

If you have any suggestions on lighting + post proces. effects relation and/or uncompressed sims textures and what 3d scene resolution set reffer to in game pls share ,i ll attach my current game config log for more info ,thanks in advance to you or anyone who can "set some light on lighting"  {nerd jk i know..}

the screen pic is the current for the log besides windowed mode ofc,so 3 = high to 4 being highest

Hey tobleron!

If something has multiple levels to pick from, it's just the quality of it and the higher the quality, the more power it needs from the computer. As simple as that. If you can't see the difference, leave it at a low-quality level. Even if you get stable framerates, lower settings will keep your computer running for longer in the long-run, keep it from overheating and drain less energy.

You most likely want the vertical sync on since that will cap your framerate at your screen refresh rate. Unless you have visible screen tearing, keep it on.

3D Scene Resolution is the resolution at which the game gets renders before it's displayed on your screen. You should easily notice that low 3D scene resolution will be more blurry but have better performance.

If you don't care about tabbing out all the time, change the display type to fullscreen instead of windowed fullscreen, it will improve performance but as you said, you don't really play on it so it's fine.

Anything at high settings, uncompressed as well as post processing effects will require more power and VRAM which can lower framerates.

Laptop mode is something you would want to use as a quick switch when you're playing on the battery, to preserve more power.

Sims 4 rendering is a separate process so if you have a weak CPU it should not bottleneck your framerates too much, it will only result in the gameplay seemingly getting stuck more often. Lowering settings won't help too much with that.

Hi Turbodriver and thanks for your reply and the explanation of the graphics options!

Tbh i m not experiencing much trouble by playing on my current settings config besides some floor types (handscraped wood flooring, edwardian tile) mirrorring in a blurrry type of way on their conected/curved edges ,and that was the main reason i asked for help in understanding the graphics parametres since even with reflections off i still get that "effect".

I did not include the CPU rating info from the config log since i did not thought of it as needed + i would not like to turn this post into a "here is my specs" type, cause that type of threads got my brain cpu to overclock over data i was not find helping in my web search.

still though i dont understand how Post Processing Effects affect/attune with Lighting (both tooltips include the word lighting  )...or is that the Sims 4 rendering process?

Post Processing Effects are effects applied to the frame once it's ready to be displayed on your screen. It just makes the game look nicer and will affect the framerates the most out of all of the other settings most likely.

Lightning is just probably resolution of the textures used for shadows and how far they appear.
