LaEspada Posted January 3, 2017 Posted January 3, 2017 I would like to have some recommendations or advice since this is going to be my first computer that I build on my own. (Kind of nervous ) My main goal for my PC is to play a modded Skyrim at 1080p and keep a smooth 50-60fps. Also to play modern games at highest settings. Like witcher 3, Battlefield, etc. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- My Current Rig that have: (HP-Prebuilt with some parts upgraded) Motherboard: Pegatron Corporation 2AB5 (ATX-Micro) CPU: Intel i5-2320 @ 3.00 GHz GPU: EVGA GTX 660 Ti FTW PSU: EVGA GQ 650W RAM: G.Skill (4x4GB) 16GB DDR3 1333 Memory: 512GB Samsung EVO 850 + 1TB SeaGate HDD -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- What I'm planning on purchasing for now: (keeping anything I don't cover) Tower: Thermaltake Versa N21 ($59.99) (I'm just looking around for now, the previous tower is ATX-Microso I need a new one) https://www.amazon.com/Thermaltake-Translucent-Window-Computer-CA-1D9-00M1WN-00/dp/B019ORHGSI/ref=sr_1_3?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1480692709&sr=1-3&keywords=tower&th=1 https://www.amazon.com/Corsair-Carbide-SPEC-02-Tower-Gaming/dp/B00I0MKMG2/ref=sr_1_5?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1483436358&sr=1-5&keywords=tower#Ask Motherboard: MSI B150A Gaming Pro ($116.59) https://www.amazon.com/MSI-Skylake-B150-Motherboard-M3/dp/B014YN67E6/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&rps=1&ie=UTF8&qid=1480692652&sr=1-1&keywords=LGA%2B1151&refinements=p_85%3A2470955011%2Cp_89%3AAsus%7CMSI%2Cp_n_feature_four_browse-bin%3A2057458011%2Cp_n_feature_six_browse-bin%3A2057506011&th=1 CPU: Intel i5-6600 (non-K) @ 3.30 GHz ($214.99) https://www.amazon.com/Intel-I5-6600-FC-LGA14C-Processor-BX80662I56600/dp/B0136JONRM/ref=sr_1_1?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1481741265&sr=1-1&keywords=i5+6600 GPU: EVGA Nvidia GTX 1070 FTW ($439.89) https://www.amazon.com/EVGA-GeForce-Support-Graphics-08G-P4-5170-KR/dp/B01I60OGUK?th=1 RAM: HyperX FURY (2x8GB) 16GB DDR4-2133 ($99.99) Upgrading to 32GB in future. https://www.amazon.com/2133MHz-Non-ECC-Desktop-HX421C14FBK2-16/dp/B00TY6A1LY/ref=sr_1_5?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1481738180&sr=1-5&keywords=ddr4%2B2133&th=1 I plan on reusing the fans for my PC in my new one if they fit, not quite sure as of now. I'm not planning on doing any heavy overclocking. I'm more of a plug and play kind of person. I'm pretty sure I got all the compatibility issues worked out, but it would be nice to see what others recommend. Maybe I can save a few dollars on just as good parts. I'm not quite sure if I want to go the CPU overclocking route, in which I'd get a compatible motherboard with i5-6600K. I'm just not overly comfortable with the idea of overclocking my computer.

hafertaler Posted January 3, 2017 Posted January 3, 2017 Keep the following stuff in mind: - you'll need a cpu cooler, since Intel doesn't include them anymore. - reusing fans is possible, but it depends which are present and what case you'll use. A lot of cases come with fans, but they tend to be on the noisier side, but that's something you have to decide for yourself. As long as you have some kind of airflow in the case (at least hot air somehow getting out) it's fine. - Power supply: you may need a new one. And if you do, in my oppinion you should not get the cheapest one possible. You don't only have to consider getting a new one based on the power of your current one, but also based on the connectors it has(!). So check what you need beforehand (mainboard, gpu, your drives and eventually what you can imagine getting additionally in the future) and make a decision based on that. edit: In regards to PSU, you should be on the safe side there, I didn't see, that you already seem to have a decent one, that should have all the connectors needed, I assumed that you might still have the "stock" one.

Yea, the stock one was some really old model so I updated it for a new PSU that's modular. Modular PSU's are super awesome for cable management. As for the fans, the case I'm planning on getting already has some fans with it, but I plan to swap out fans from my old one for the CPU and the case mounts if they fit. If not, then it'll be a quick purchase.
zzz72w3r Posted January 3, 2017 Posted January 3, 2017 EVGA GQ 650W is a fine PSU and there is no need for replacement. Since this is your first built, is full tower really what you want? I have micro-ATX, HTPC, mid-tower and full tower myself. Full tower is unsightly, a pain to move and you will never use that much space. Most MB has pretty straight forward one click overclock nowadays so getting a K-series i5 might be worthwhile.

My brother has a full tower and it doesn't seem all that unsightly to me. But each to their own. My current tower is pretty cramped for space with little breathing room for the GPU and I have to do some rather hardcore/annoying cable management for proper airflow. Although, the one I've linked is a mid-tower, but I'm seeing some flaws with it that might bother me later down the road so I'm looking at others. Also, if I get the i5-6600K how do I tell if the motherboard I'm getting is compatible for Overclocking it?
