This question concerns the psychology of the players (real-world people who play Skyrim). There is something that is confusing me to no end. I would like to hope that I won't be unleashing a shitstorm of hate with this.

 

When I first began to read this forum, I was astonished to discover that a large majority of rape mod users were actually using them not to rape but to get raped. Later still, I was again astonished to discover that a large majority of those men seemed to be playing female characters. Admittedly, some players were different, but I couldn't help noticing that generally people talk about one or another rape mod in such a way that you can see that they assume that their readers' purpose is to get their female character raped.

 

I have been trying to imagine myself in the shoes of such men and understand what is going on in their heads, but to no avail. If I would play a female character (as I have done once in my life in Fallout), I would play a woman, not a teenage boy's wet dream. I mean, I would try my best to think like a woman. I would make her act the way a woman plausibly acts, do things a woman would like, in particular, using men to my advantage instead of trying to get abused by them. For that matter, many years ago when Second Life was still popular, I was thinking about building a naked woman and walking around there teasing men. But then I didn't bother after all.

 

I want to emphasize that I am not suggesting or hinting or implying or insinuating that anything anyone does is somehow "wrong", and I have no interest whatsoever in making any of you feel the same way as I do about anything. I am merely curious to understand a way of thinking that seems completely alien to me.

 

That said, can you enlighten me as to why would a male player play a female character and get her raped? What is the point?

Not everyone likes playing muscle bound neanderthals and many find looking at a female character better then looking at a male character unless the person is gay and likes looking at male characters or they like using male characters instead of female characters.

Hmm, now I don't do this often so I can't really speak with experience or anything but usually in skyrim. The npcs are never nearly as attractive as the player character if you designed the player character yourself. I designed my ideal fantasy gal and then when the raping commenced it would enter third person view. Which I guess allowed me to feel detached from the character. When I did that I wasn't really playing the game to play the game. I was playing the game just for the sex scenes. This would result in me switching saves and playing my male character once again. Dunno if that made any sense but that's why I do it sometimes.

Speaking for me personally, it's something of an admiration, for a woman to be raped and even kept in slavery, but then go on to become the hero of the story whether it be skyrim or fallout, is something very beautiful to me. The broken hero type RP. For those games that allow you to be a villain, well now you have a backstory for your head canon as to why.

 

But for those who get off on the mere being raped it's not so far fetched to me. There are women who fantasize about being raped, and there are men who fantasize about being women. So is it to far a throw to put those two together? It's actually quite simple.  As a rational human being, I am capable of distinguishing between real people and digital characters.  As such, it's fun to explore in video games many of the options that I would never even consider in real life.

 

Also, as a huge fan of consensual BDSM (and roleplay that may occur in it, such as rape fantasies), Skyrim's modders have created a unique playground for such gameplay.

Here's one little example: Deviously Cursed Loot has an entire section on misogyny.  Since I, as the player, have ultimate control over the options menu, I get to choose what parts are enabled or not.  Therefore, anything I enable, I have granted consent for.  By extension, that also means my character has granted consent.  This means every time my character gets raped because she dared wear a collar in public, she actually consented to the encounter before it even happened, specifically *BECAUSE* I enabled the option for it to happen.

Rape is a nasty thing in real life and being the rapist in a game would strike a tad to true to home aka make you the evil actor in a circumstance we consider worse than murdering a ton of people apparently. So being the male rapist  would feel like you are the active actor in the scenario. Playing the female victim allows to keep a disconnect to the evil act since you are not pushing a button to do it.

 

At least to me kind of an important aspect of such fantasies is that the victim is not the broken person in there but the perpetrators regardless of what they experience. Might sound defensive but in essence the identification remains with the victim, not the criminal.

 

In the end it is a sexual fantasy and I think most don't play as male subs because they feel heterosexual and don't get much out of fem dom. As I play female characters a lot, usually for the greater story variation off the stereotypical path I play plenty of female heroines who can beat everything to a pulp as well. This is more for darker fantasies and usually not much about progressing the original game.

It's very hard to describe "what's going on inside the brain when...". Anyway:

 

For my first sexlab playthrough (few years back), I chose to play as a male argonian. I planned to be dominant, and to rape some of my enemies. That lasted me for few days at most, then I got bored and uninstalled. When I got back, I've come to play a game with "reverse-"bestiality (where the animal rapes the human and not the other way around). From that point, I play female characters. For few reasons:

For me, I like to see women. This is the reason why I make a female character. But also as an "old fashioned man" I don't like other man to touch my girl. So she of course love other girls, (most of the time Serana).

This game is, as far as I see, set in a early medieval setting. Which make the rape of a defeated women somewhat immersive, and in my opinion a minor problem for the lady. I think it also could end in rape and enslaved or even killed.

It makes sense for me, a medieval setting, where if a woman would try to fight and lost, some men would take advantage of the defeat and do their thing.

When I discovered this forum, I had similar thoughts, but I decided to give these adult mods a try anyway.

When I tried sexlab + defeat for the first time, I found seeing my silky smooth, milk white skinned character getting ramed by a bunch of nasty dirty bandits and having their way with her insanely arousing. Running back to civilization with arms covering your naked body and jizz on your face, only to get abused and laughed at by the townsfolk, when you try to get your shit together, losing equipment to people that raped and robed you. No porn even came close. Because it felt sort of organic and real. The scene of my characters rape had a past and a future, my character did things before and after being raped, unlike porn where it's wam bam thank you mam.

 

I would usually start with an incredibly weak female character (all skills start with 0, around 100 HP, 80 carry weight etc.), that would try to raid dungeons and places and get fucked a lot, slowly getting in control over the course of the game and instead of getting raped and forced to flee a fortress, would eventually start being able to defend herself and get away with the spoils and riches of dungeons. Slowly saving up for a place to stay, getting more powerful. Naturally this requires mods that make the game a lot more difficult, especially the combat.

Try to do it, play without quicksave, avoid death by taking it up the ass or die and start over. High risk, moderate reward. Such is life, Kappa.

Its simply that NPCs just aren't that interesting. It's hard to project a roleplay on an AI that will walk around in circles and will forget about you in the next second if you let it.

 

You play as a woman with hostile men NPCs and they have a reason to aggro, attack and rape. You as the player can determine how she feels and how she will react. Will she go on hell bent rampage or run for her life? What ever suits the desire of the player.

Personally, while I am a male myself, I play as female characters in all games that give me the option to.

 

This is not because I fantasize about being a woman, or even because I want to "role-play" as a woman. Unlike some players, perhaps, I *never* play games (regardless of having a male or female lead) with the mindset that I "am" the player-character, or that the player-character is "me, if I was in that game's world". I play with a much more detached, "observer" sort of mindset. The player-character and myself (as the person playing the game) are always two separate things, and I approach the character I'm playing the game as that way. Instead of thoughts like: "What would I do in such-and-such situation?"; I think: "What would my character do in such-and-such situation?" or "How would my character respond if such-and-such happened to them?". I never look at it as if it was what would "I" do, it's what would "they" do.

 

Perhaps in part because of this detachment, I also prefer to play as female characters because in most cases I either A] Enjoy the design of the female characters more than the male designs; B] Enjoy the idea of whatever story is taking place in the game world being lead by a female lead character rather than a male one.

 

I can often times create or dress up that female character in better, more interesting, or sexier ways than I can a male character (especially since I'm not attracted to men), and I can most often create my female character (in games such as Skyrim) to outright look better than any of the female NPCs already in the game, giving me something that's nicer to look at throughout my playthrough if the game is in 3rd person. Even in games that aren't 3rd person, though, like shooters, I prefer female characters to male ones because I enjoy the idea of female leads in these game's stories. This is mostly for two reasons: 1) I enjoy strong and capable female characters; 2) I'm bored to death of rinse-and-repeat male lead characters that always have more-or-less the same stories, more-or-less the same motivations, and even more-or-less the same god damn names. lol

Hmm... if I really think about it, I suppose in my case it'd be the end result of several factors.

 

Part one, I have never felt any personal attachment to my characters. I'm not playing as a fantasy version of myself, I'm simply playing as a character. I control the character, but more as an outside presence looking in than a denizen of the world.

 

Part two, my enjoyment of a game is increased if the character is visually appealing. For a male character, this simply means they look cool, for a female character, they can be sexy, cute, or cool, as there's also the whole physical attraction angle there. That angle also means that given the choice between two characters with no personality, I will go for the female one even if I like both characters' designs.

 

Part three, when it comes to porn content it seems like there are two main categories - vanilla romantic stuff and aggressive rapey stuff. I can enjoy both camps (provided the latter doesn't get too extreme) but Skyrim mods don't really lend themselves all that well to the former. Writing good romantic relationships that also feature sex is not something everyone can do well, for starters, but that's also not really something that could be expressed very well in a game like Skyrim either. You'd basically need to put everything to a stop in order to access the content. On the other hand it's a lot easier to get the hanky-panky going on when the partners are random NPCs more often than not, and there's no chance of the event being ruined by clumsy writing or a lack of emotional attachment. Hence the prolificacy of rape mods.

 

Finally, part four, the player character frequently gets raped rather than does the raping because currently sex isn't really integrated into the game. To initiate sex with an NPC, that requires me, the player, to make a conscious decision to bring all other gameplay to a halt for a couple of minutes to do some diddling. If there was a way to implement sex as a sort of minigame and then attach that to things like combat and quests I'd be all over that, but as is I usually can't be arsed to initiate sex unless it's a form of RPing or - as rape mods provide - initiated through means out of my control.

 

So all of that comes together as playing a female character in a game world with rape mods active.
