Weird MS password thing, (probably just weird).

Back in the day when I 'upgraded' my crap non work based laptop to Windows 8, I used a 20 character password to attach it to the MS online services. When I then upgraded said laptop to 8.1 I found that I had to reduce that password to 15 characters before I could log in. At the time I just thought it was me. Anyway that laptop is now dead. However this is the weird thing. Last week I was setting up a client machine with an 18 character password and everything worked, and suddenly, (me having said a job well done, bla bla), they couldn't yesterday log in. So I asked them all the obvious questions about have you changed the password or done anything weird. They said 'no'. (But it is a client so you can't believe them). Double checked records with theirs, and nothing had changed yet the password didn't work. So redid password to 15 characters, and it worked. Obviously probably need another week to see if that holds, but from the aforementioned experience, I seem a bit perturbed.

 

So the question is:-

 

a) Anybody else witnessed this?

You probably did something wrong - sort your shit out.

c) 15 character passwords are the magic 'other' organisation sweet points for decryption at this time.

Windows limitation, even on a Windows 2012 R2 dimain. Yes it's weird ...

 

And, there is a bug (only for Windows 7) when if your login name is superior than 20 chars, you can't log-in in certain domains too (LDAP powered mostly).
