gooboo Posted August 30, 2016 Posted August 30, 2016 I've been trying to figure out an issue with some of my meshes appearing invisible in game and I'm all out of ideas. I used 3ds Max and Blender to edit them. When I look at the outfits in the construction kit or Outfit Studio everything appears to be fine, the textures are all visible and working, but for some reason when I try on the outfits in-game some of the meshes are just invisible. Can anyone help me figure out why this is happening? The .nif files appear to be correct in Nifskope, so I don't see what's causing them to disappear in-game. Usually if it's a missing texture they would appear bright purple, but that isn't happening here. I haven't edited the .dds files at all, so I don't think that's the cause of the problem. Sometimes certain parts of the mesh appear just fine, like the scarf on Desdemona's outfit, but other parts don't appear at all. I can't figure out why this is. Here are two .nif files for those who want to take a look and see if I messed something up there. nifs.rar Thanks in advance.
Lupercal16 Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 Do you have these lines in your custom ini [Archive]bInvalidateOlderFiles=1sResourceDataDirsFinal= You need these lines to use mods in FO4, other then this tip I won't be able to help.

I'd check the texture paths for failing texture loading anyway, if there's some form of transparency set somewhere for the object but the actual texture isn't loading to tell the object where it's transparent and where it should be opaque, other things than just "purple" might happen.
bob223355 Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 might be something in the materials file that needs some work.
gooboo Posted August 31, 2016 Author Posted August 31, 2016 Both of the meshes use unedited materials files. For example the original Piper mesh works just fine, there's no problem with the textures or materials files. When I use my version of the Piper mesh, which uses all the same textures and materials files, I get invisible meshes. I have no idea why that is. The texture paths look like they're fine to me in Nifskope, but obviously something isn't working. Has anyone who's downloaded these meshes tried to see if they appear in-game for them? The Piper outfit is just a simple replacer- you should be able to just copy and paste it into the right folder and try it out with no further modding required.
ralfetas Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 Don't think this is something to do with materials. I take a quick look on the nif, don't see a problem, but i am not a expert on nif files, far from it, but in my experience with problem like this, what i think it could be. Weights are not assign to this piece, so they disapear, normal map is inverted (but i think is not because we would see on the backside).
gooboo Posted August 31, 2016 Author Posted August 31, 2016 I have read something about meshes disappearing when weights weren't assigned as well, but when I look at the mesh in blender it has weights on it, and I've edited plenty of other meshes in blender without invisibility problems too. I can't seem to find much of a pattern why some clothing meshes work for me and other don't. I made a thread here a few days about about altering the BOS uniform meshes, and those didn't turn invisible, so I don't know why these meshes are. Here's a pic of some of the weights in Blender. Everything at least appears to be fine in blender- maybe someone who's more knowledgeable about nifskope can say whether some information regarding weights is being lost or corrupted in the .nif files.
ousnius Posted August 31, 2016 Posted August 31, 2016 Haven't seen an issue in the VestAndScarf.nif, the PiperBodyF.nif however has broken transform controllers in it. You can find them using "Spells -> Sanitize -> Check Links" in NifSkope. You need to assign the right references to the right blocks.
thatTESguy Posted September 1, 2016 Posted September 1, 2016 I initially suspected the segments, but those appear to be in order. One thing that has come up before is if any bones are assigned to zero weighting. This can be tested by re-rigging the mesh to the body in OS and seeing if that fixes things. Is it dependent on the camera angle? If so, I'd delete and rebuild the segments in OS even if they appear to be fine. /spent too many hours trying to debug mesh display issues in the new engine
gooboo Posted September 2, 2016 Author Posted September 2, 2016 How do you re-rig a mesh to the body in outfit studio? I don't really know much about outfit studio, as in the past I've done almost all of my modding in Blender.
gooboo Posted September 6, 2016 Author Posted September 6, 2016 Well, I figured out the problem. As it turns out the invisible meshes were in face caused by some bones having zero weighting to them, although it isn't really easy to spot in something like Blender. In case anyone else runs into this problem this page here explains how you can find the messed up bones in Nifskope instead, since it doesn't really show up clearly in Blender, which is why it took me so long to figure out what was ultimately a relatively simple problem. http://wiki.tesnexus.com/index.php/Fixing_Invisible_Meshes_for_Fallout_4
