While it's a positive move, I don't think a gay superhero is going to really resonate with the teenage heterosexual boys comics are aimed at.

Im guessing that since the universe theyre doing it in is being rebooted for this, their plan would be to just start over and reboot if it does horrible on sales.

I don't really know that much about comics to be honest. I have a fetish for geeks and comic freaks but I never got into anything other then maybe JtHM but I dunno if that really counts...

I read some of the comments though and was so put off, it sounds like this has resorted in a bunch of gay bashing. I can't help but wonder if this will make certain things worse. I'm bi and I don't know why it matters who does what in private. I also don't understand people that use a religious stand point as if to say, "I needed an imaginary friend to tell me what is right and wrong. He told me I hate gays."

Touching on what Loogie said, I don't think that this was a great move. While people may feel that it is a way to empower gays, I think this was going too far. I can't say that I am a big comic book reader or fan or anything, (I prefer manga anyway) but I can't say that any comic heroes' sexuality played much of a role in their comics. I mean, maybe Catwoman or Poison Ivy could seduce Batman or whatever and maybe Superman had Lois Lane...but these weren't real significant factors in the comic. I don't know...I just don't see the actual point in it. At the end of the day though, I could care less if the Green Lantern is gay...I'm not gonna waste my time or energy gay bashing because it's real stupid. It's whatever to me...

I don't care what people do behind closed doors with another consenting adult but I do find it disturbing to force issues like sexual orientation on minors. I mean isn't that the target audience of a mainstream character like green lantern? If your coming of age and you might think your homosexual I think you have enough support out there in the media today that putting it in comics is silly/sick. I don't need to know if superman is a "ladies man" either, if he is. Let kids be kids for gosh sakes.

There was a kid when I was in high school who ate part of a shot gun that would prolly disagree with you on the "enough support in the media" line. Why is it "sick" when his sexuality is brought up but it's ok if other characters are obviously straight? I don't see this as really a kids issue either, which is the only thing people on the other side are pushing so badly. Looking at the comics, I see adult material even without sexual reference. Media support to a lonely, confused/scared sexually unknown kid is about as helpful as telling a kid with cancer Santa will bring them presents.

Americans put way too much time and effort into rooting out sexual crap that just doesn't need to be a big deal. For any reason. You can have a guy's head explode with bits of brains and even the stem flying at your face in 3D and we don't do anything passed a "Yeah that happens" shrug. Someone is gay and suddenly worlds come crashing. I dunno why they felt they wanted to do this with an already established character but my reaction is based on the majorities reaction at this point. People are gay bashing an imaginary character. Way too much emphasis on sexuality in this country.

My understanding was they're resetting the DC universe and in the original this character was straight BUT had a gay son that is also a superhero. Since this Green Lantern would be too young to have an adult son, they just made him gay.

Right now we're living in a phase where society is being more open to gays as a civil rights issue. By the time the kids who are in high school now are in power, if you're straight finding out the person you're in a conversation with is gay will have the same minor impact as finding out they happen to be fans of music you dislike.

It's these types of thoughts that really make me happy.:)

Gay people and straight people are part of the fabric of society. It's just a part of a character, like hair color or skin tone.

I respect your passion but hetero kids have killed themselves over rejection' date=' Angst and depression isn't just for gays All I'm saying is sexuality is everywhere and I think its wrong to target kids with it for publicity and profit.[/quote']

Actually I let this one slip and I shouldn't have, I apologize. This left a dent on my heart when I was a kid and even though I didn't know him well, I knew why he did what he did and I was effected as well but by no means near as much. I'm a female, being bi is super trendy and 'hawt'. I felt the pain of my best friend since literally kindergarten telling me I was evil, would burn in Hell and she would not have anything to do with me because she found God.

I answered this with some hate and I really do apologize; I shouldn't have answered with the heat still in my head. Everyone is going to go through hell in high school I'm afraid.

(Personally, I think this whole "GREEN LANTERN IS OFFICIALLY GAY!! bullshit is just for more attention from the company lol)

It was inevitable for DC to do something like this, Marvel has had many openly gay characters in their comics since the early 90's. In fact, Northstar is marrying his boyfriend in his X-men comic this month. One could call GL coming out a ploy for sales but I prefer to see it as some long overdue progress being made and I'm glad they did it. We'll prob. see a few more coming out in the comics in the next few years. I honestly was suprised they went with Green Lantern though, when they announced they were going to introduce a gay character a few months ago, I thought it was gonna be the new Superboy.

Oh hun no I was totally out of line, this was just an innocent thread about an imaginary character suddenly come out of his invisible closet and I dragged it into reality. I let that get to me in a way I shouldn't have and by 'it' I really mean the gay bashing comments on the site I saw associated with the link. I shouldn't have. You have nothing to apologize for hun seriously.

And don't worry about cosplay or anything like that. Everyone here and anywhere else does something a little... off the beaten path. You're at LL!

I would love the green lantern as a comic character if it wasn't for DC comics. now hand on heart I really have no anmnimosity towards the USA (I'm british...yes i'm comming out)I find like my own culture there's some stuff to really like and some that sucks and sorry but DC comics is one I don't like, it seems to me to be absolutley mired in the past glories (up to you if it's a good or bad thing)whereas marvel do seem to be a lot more forward looking. The green Lantern is a fascinating concept of a super hero and i think the same way about iron man and it's all down to how you present your idea to the public

I'd love to see some Catwoman/Wonder Woman action... Whips' date=' leather, and rope... Mmm... how could that go wrong?

Not from their official comic publisher. Their movies will be no better than mainstream porn movies.

Makes Avenger looks bad. :@ Let japanese do Hentai-stuff like that.

Keep American superhero tradition safe & sound for every international teen audience.

We were very different as kids, beng4321, you and I. Saying "let kids be kids" means to me let kids have their outlets for sexual fantasies. Personally, I was masturbating and fantasizing about girls and women back in elementary school. I still remember my biggest love interests from childhood because of how strong those feelings were.

I also remember how cruel some kids can be with other kids. Might be good for some gay boys to have Green Lantern to draw from. All that support you speak of seems odd coming from someone who thinks this is "silly/sick".

You know, ben, looking at your avatar, well, this new Green Lantern comic could be aimed at your demographic. Again, coming from you, sounds odd to say comics are for kids when you're old enough to have kids yourself.

In a world where everything gay is becoming the new "COOL"...

This will not be "COOL".

If you're actually gay and not being gay because it is cool, then it probably really is cool.

You know what irritates me, just a little, no huge deal... is that being homophobic is considered wrong by those who are gay/lesbian or support gay communities. Somehow, they managed to turn it around so that being grossed out by your own sex is bad. No, homophobia is perfectly normal and natural and nothing to be ashamed of either. Gay pride, fat pride, whatever, they like to turn it around and start picking on those who are healthy and fit. Fuck that.
