It may be because I copied over my files from my other computer. No idea atm.
Guest Posted May 10, 2016 Posted May 10, 2016 HERE was the problem: Found on http://forums.uesp.net/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=24703 Oblivion_default.ini is used by the game as a "template" to recreate Oblivion.ini if it's missing (or hasn't been created yet because the game is running for the first time). You shouldn't normally edit settings in the template, as they exist in Oblivion.ini anyway.Try changing the settings you mentioned one-by-one in Oblivion.ini to isolate which one(s) is/are causing the crash. If you've isolated the problem to something sound or music-related, it's usually the music, typically due to Oblivion trying to find your system's default MP3 codec and failing to find a compatible one. Result is when the music starts playing on the Main Menu, the game locks up or crashes. The cause of this is usually Media Player software which installs its own codecs (and/or DirectShow filters) and makes them the Windows default codecs. Try uninstalling your Media Player software to see if the problem goes away. Known potential culprits? FFDShow, Nero, PowerDVD, and maybe others.Another thing that can cause the game to crash on starting a new game or loading a savegame (in both cases when 3D rendering begins) is running it on a different video card to the one it autodetected on first run. This can happen when fitting a new video card, or migrating Oblivion across to a new PC with a different video card. The game stores the video card's manufacturer/model ID in Oblivion.ini and, if the stored ID doesn't match the currently fitted card's ID, the game is likely to crash. The way to solve this is to back up Oblivion.ini (rename it so the game doesn't find it), run the Oblivion Launcher to let it autodetect your NEW video card ID and create a NEW Oblivion.ini containing it, then edit the NEW Oblivion.ini and cut/paste the new card ID settings to the backed upo Oblivion.ini. You can then delete the new Oblivion.ini, rename the backed up one (to reinstate all your tweaks), and the game will now work OK with the new (and correct) video card ID in place. I had to do this after I upgraded to my 64-bit PC with Geforce GTX 560 PCI-E video card, installed bare-bones Oblivion on it, netyworked the two PC's and copied the original Oblivion installation from the old PC to the new, overwriting it (to reinstate ALL my mods, texture packs, etc, without painstakingly reinstalling them all one-by-one - only took me about 20 minutes flat rather than days). My old 32-bit PC had a Geforce 7900GS AGP 8x video card and, since the card ID in Oblivion.ini was now incorrect, the game consistently crashed (thinking it was running on a 7900GS where it was actually running on a GTX 560) until I used the above procedure to determine the GTX 560's ID and cut/paste it into place. The Oblivion.ini video card ID settings to cut/paste across are all in the [Display] section, and are as follows...uVideoDeviceIdentifierPart1uVideoDeviceIdentifierPart2uVideoDeviceIdentifierPart3uVideoDeviceIdentifierPart4Each one is followed by a number, and all four parts should be assumed to be UNIQUE to your particular video card manufacturer/model.
