How do I add custom images to the framed wall artwork in the settlement building mode?

Could I do this by copying and pasting JPEG images to the artwork texture using GIMP? Or is it not that simple?

And, no, you cannot use JPGS. You need to get the DDS of the texture and replace it with the content you want, and then export the DDS in exactly the same format.

GIMP is good to do that, as Paint.net or Photoshop.

Yes, I meant that I wanted to cut and paste images from jpeg's to the artwork and then convert it into a dds.

Are the textures for the artwork in the texture directories for Fallout 4? How do I find them so I can edit?

They should be.

If you know which DDS you are looking for, then just edit it, and replace it.

I have used JPEGS many times as long as the jpeg is the same size as the you can drop them on top of the .dds in paint - net gimp or one of the others if you are going to cut something out of a jpeg and place it onto a .dds paint - net would probably be the best one since you can have multiple files loaded and cut something from one and paste it into another. I have never converted a jpeg to .dds format before doing this since I see no point in it and it never caused me any problems.

Which directories are the textures for the artwork located? I can't find them.

computer/local disk ©/program files (x86)/steam/steamapps/common/fallout 4/data/textures/??????

In game textures and meshes would be in a BSA or whatever fallout 4 uses to store all their files in. You will need a extractor to get them out.

Where do I get this extractor? And where are the files located that I need to extract?

Please walk me through this?

I have no clue what fallout 4 has as I don't have it and the textures I have on clue where they would they found might be found under clutter. But if they use BSA's then all you need is a BSA extractor. If you have FOMM (fallout mod manager) it has a built in BSA extractor in it you can also just download it and use the extractor if you want I use it for fallout 3 New Vegas oblivion and skyrim. The newest OBMM (oblivion mod manager) also has a built in BSA extractor. If it uses something else then you will have to find a extractor that works with whatever it is.

There is a version of FOMM found on LL in the fallout section and you can also find it on the nexus same as the OBMM.

Nope, the format changed to BA2.

Search on internet about BA2 Extractor and use it.

I downloaded the bethesda archive extractor, and extracted all texture files to a folder that I made in documents.

So I went ahead and added the photo I wanted over the existing artwork using GIMP, by opening the photo using the "open as layers" option,  I clicked "merge all visible layers" and then exported it as a dds file and overwrote the old one.

I resized the image beforehand to fit the exact image border boundaries, which was 512x512 pixels so it would fit perfectly.

Booted up the game, went into settlement building mode, chose the painting in question, but it didn't seem to work.

Am I extracting the textures to the wrong directory?

The usual folder should be like: C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Fallout 4\Data\Textures\

It may be a sub folder.

If you edit an existing DDS, then you should be fine, as long as you DO NOT change the original name.

Why you "merged the layers"???? Probably they were just mipmaps layers.

Unlike Skyrim where most of the texture files were easily accessible, these are the only texture files that are openly accessible in the Fallout 4 game folder, and do not require a BSA BA2 extractor to edit.

The textures that I want to edit have to be extracted.

After I extracted and edited the desired texture, and then replaced the original with the edited version using GIMP, it did not work when I booted up the game to check the artwork that I edited.

My edits aren't registering.

Perhaps I extracted the BSA/BA2 texture files to the wrong directory, which was a folder that I created in documents.

Folders look good.

Be sure yo have the correct option in your ini files to give priorities to the loose files.

And keep in mind that the last DLC changed the way to do it (and I don't know the new way to do it.)
